    Gum After Eating

Another option would be to let a sugar-free mint melt in your mouth. I occassionally chew gum and have never swallowed a piece.

    Drinking While Eating

I got a glass of ice. I allowed myself to sip what was melted if I really felt the need for it. I noticed that after about 2 weeks of this, I didn't need it anymore.

    First 3 days post-op

I found that Gas-X Thin Strips were wonderful for the gas. I used them several times a day for the first week. Eventually the gas goes away. Just hang in there and let everything heal!

    When to stop!!!

I am finding that what I eat (and in what order) is important too. I eat Protein first, then some veggies. Protein makes me feel better (I think my blood sugar does not spike) and I am not hungry for longer. Then I wait for a while to see...am I really hungry or is it just wanting to eat more asopposed to needing it to satisfy hunger? I have to remember that I am building new habits to replace the lifetime of bad habits I had. This takes a while and is not always easy. The band gives me a tool to make it easier...but I don't get down on myself if I am not perfect!
  7. Hello fellow bandsters. Just posting an introduction: Starting BMI/weight: 34.1/231 lbs Surgery Date: November 16, 2007 Surgery BMI/weight: 32.5/220 lbs Surgeon: John M. Marsden, M.D. Now: 30.7/208 lbs I am not feeling any restriction currently but I get my first fill tomorrow! I self paid as an investment in my future. I have central body obesity, high blood pressure and hyperlipidemia. My mother had the same body type, heart disease and diabetes. My insurance would not pay unless I had a BMI of 42 or greater! I would have to be about 290 lbs first. I could see that happening eventually if I kept going as I was, so I took the leap. I am glad I did.

    restriction

I had my first fill on Dec. 12th (today is Dec. 14th) and I was told to do liquids only for the first day after, then advance to mushies on day 2. Then if everything was fine I could try solids again on day 3. I would, at the very least, call and ask about how you are feeling. The staff at my center are always willing to answer questions. Good luck!

    It's My Turn Now!!!

Welcome Angelsvoice! I believe you can do this and it is more than likely that your diabetes will improve as you loose the weight. Don't worry about setting your goal! Set one for now and you can evaluate with your doctor if that is still right for you as you get closer to that weight. One of the things I like best about the band is that it is adjustable to what each individual needs. You are obviously a highly motivated person (finishing school is a huge accomplishment!). This is a process that takes time to perfect...but you WILL get there! Good luck and congratulations!
