Anyone experience keytones in urine?
Shannon Piper replied to Shannon Piper's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The low carb/high Protein thing concerns me more for the kidney stone issue. Believe me I am thrilled my blood sugar is lower. -
Suggestion for Dehydration
Shannon Piper replied to Shannon Piper's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
@bittersweet No I am not shivering and I don't have a fever. I am calling this carb death . I'm not sure if that's an accurate assumption. Before surgery I was eating normal food and burning that as fuel and not losing much weight if any. After surgery I am eating nothing but Protein shakes and burning the fat that has been stored , so I can only guess this is what's happening. I went to the ER and all my blood work was normal. Electrolytes, kidneys all good. Potassium good. But doctor thought I might be slightly dry so he gave me 2 liters of Fluid to load me up and IV Zofran for nausea. I feel better. I just got to find the right balance of what kind of fluid to drink and hope I force it down better each day. The coldness crap though really sucks. -
Suggestion for Dehydration
Shannon Piper replied to Shannon Piper's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am dehydrated. Urine is too dark and skin is real dry. I have always been a heavy Water drinker, water was never a problem. I have been recently drinking Propel water, I cant stomach regular water. I cant do sugar free popsicles cause they have Aspertame. Artificial sweeteners never did digest well with me even before surgery. Now I am feeling so nauseated I am finding it hard to even swallow the water. I can drink the Protein shake though. And I am totally freezing all the time. Blood pressure is normal and so is blood sugar. I really think electrolytes are totally off. This is such a pain in the ass. But down 22lbs in 10days. How amazing how much weight you can lose when you can only suck air and liquid food. -
Rough day, feeling irate and...
Shannon Piper replied to CanyonBaby's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hangry is a good way to describe this. I am only 5 days post op and hating these boring liquid shakes. I am so friggin hungry. But I stepped on my scale and I a down 12 pounds. I keep reminding myself this is the reason I did it. But I cant wait until I can do pureed food. -
Excessive burping and esophgeal pain after hiatal hernia and sleeve
Shannon Piper posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi out there. I just had the sleeve repair with a repair of my hiatal hernia. I am having no pain from the sleeve part. But the hernia part is killing me. I cant drink Water, broth or even the Protein shakes without excessive burping and pain down my esophagus and throat. I know it has only been 24 hrs but I am home now and I cant swallow every 15 minutes for water or nourishment without severe burning and discomfort. The doctor told me that this is expected from the irritation of being under anesthesia plus the hernia being stitched up and it takes time. But I had undergone surgery before and the intubation never irritated my esophagus like this. I had reflux to begin with but this is worse. I fear am going to get dehydrated. The doctor told me I could do sugar free popsicles and that would help with fluids. I pray this is temporary because I am in a lot of discomfort. Anyone out there have similar experience and the outcome you could share? -
I'm hungry... Help!
Shannon Piper replied to lexx1209's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yup I keep telling myself I did this for a reason too. Thinking about writing a book about all this. Its amazing how much the Nut and doctor don't warn you about what to expect. And its amazing how some things affect certain people and others have no problems at all -
I'm hungry... Help!
Shannon Piper replied to lexx1209's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes I think my body is just trying to adjust. Although I am craving food, I am nowhere near the food stage of this program yet, so I don't even know yet what I can tolerate for solid food. I will learn it as each stage comes along. But those shakes are getting boring real fast. -
Diarrhea after protein shake/ensure?
Shannon Piper replied to Justoperated's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Diarrhea is not that bad. I'd rather have this than constipation. Its only the 4th day for me plus 2nd full day of Protein shakes. I think it will get better. Just need to learn what my stomach will and wont tolerate. -
Popsicle warning for those newly sleeved
Shannon Piper replied to Mike4132's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is so right! sugar free popsicles are flavored with Aspertame. So is Crystal Light. I have asthma and this horrible additive causes coughing and problems with breathing. And it also causes bloating and gas. I tried the popsicles first day after surgery and I was in agony. The things you are not warned of post-op are remarkable. -
5 Days Post Op- Stomach Growling Like Hunger/Dr did not put me on PPI
Shannon Piper replied to raelynn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yeah my stomach rumbles and growls too. And I think at least I hope I am mistaking this for hunger pains. I am on RX ppi Nexium , and Reglan. I had real bad acid reflux before and still do. We just have to tough it out. -
I've been using the Pure Protein shakes chocolate flavored. Amazon sells them by the case and Trader Joes sells them individually. They have 35 grams of protein per can. 90% of Calcium. Look them up on Amazon. They have quite a bit of the Vitamins and minerals we are supposed to get. Traders has a soy Protein powder also that can be mixed into almond milk. It is loaded with vitamins and costs about $16 for a 2 weeks supply.

I'm hungry... Help!
Shannon Piper replied to lexx1209's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had the sleeve on Dec 17th. From the moment I woke up in recovery I have been hungry. I am craving meat like crazy. I was told over and over by former patients that you never crave food again. What a bunch of BS. I experience gurgling in my stomach that is acid reflux and I feel tortured seeing food commercials on TV. Worst time of the year for this around the holidays. Can only hope this gets better. And those boring Protein shakes do NOT make you feel full. Total myth. -
Excessive burping and esophgeal pain after hiatal hernia and sleeve
Shannon Piper replied to Shannon Piper's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So now its day 4 . Burping not so bad as before. Esophagus still pretty inflamed. Was able to drink one 11 oz can Pure Protein shake yesterday but it took 3 hrs! So boring. Still suffering stomach discomfort after swallowing anything. But hope that improves daily. Baby steps. -
Everything I consume causes acid reflux
Shannon Piper replied to HawaiianTexan's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi. I agree with others on this post about taking your stomach meds every day. I take Nexium every day. Also my doctor prescribed a drug called Reglan. It works to move the contents of your stomach out easier so you don't suffer from acid reflux as much. You can google it and ask the doc if it would be a good idea to try it. And you might even need to switch to something other than omeprazole. Protonix, Carafate, Nexium, Pepcid. These are all good choices too. You might need something different and stronger. I take mine twice daily -
Diarrhea after protein shake/ensure?
Shannon Piper replied to Justoperated's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Four days post op and having the same problem. Not explosive but watery. What is this so called crap about constipation? Nope. Been taking pain meds and still have this issue. I'm afraid to go anywhere and have this problem. I don't want to wind up wearing an old persons diaper! -
Will I always be cold?
Shannon Piper replied to Iowa_summergirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have been feeling cold constantly since surgery too. I live in Vegas and being overweight I have always been hot. At first I thought because I had been given a couple of shots to avoid blood clots after surgery that this was thinning my blood and making me feel cold. But now after reading about not getting carbs for fuel it makes more sense. But I am wondering if I am going to feel cold for the rest of my life.
