Pregnant almost 3 months out
GAWildKat replied to Israh's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Actually it was a poorly worded statement to just say get an abortion. However, when I went through bariatric surgery 2 yrs ago my surgeon didn't mince words during the classes with the ladies. If you get pregnant within 18mons of having bariatric surgery the recommendation is to get an abortion. You risk the health of yourself and the baby any time before then. Being pregnant shortly after bariatric surgery can kill you! The question we all were asked was did we have our tubes tied/hysterectomy or we on a long term birth control such as depo or IUD, etc. If not, recommendations were made and they could work with our OB to discuss options. The personal questions were done during appointments. But the eye openers were during the meetings so they could be discussed openly. Sent from my SM-T350 using Tapatalk -
Air Fryer Goodbye Fried Foods
GAWildKat replied to SleeveDreamer's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think I will stick to my toaster oven. For 2 people it does enough and we don't do a lot of fries and things like wings. Sent from my SM-T350 using Tapatalk -

Attitude after surgery?
GAWildKat replied to Rucamama's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Have you and your spouse talked about the surgery and everything related to it? WLS was a several year goal for me and when my insurance finally offered it an option I asked to go through the process to see if I qualified for it. By that point we had discussed it as an option for several years. But when reality hit it was time to discuss everything and make sure this was what we both wanted. He assured me that he wanted to grow old with me. As a heavier woman that wasn't in the cards. I was then 41 with a heart condition that would kill me within 5-10yrs. Weightloss surgery was seen as my best option long term. He adores me and makes sure I try to stay on task with my eating. And I manage his diet and blood pressure, and such. Do only 20% of RNYers experience dumping syndrome?
GAWildKat replied to gina171's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 2 yrs out and occasionally get dumping. The worst case was when I was out alone and ordered food that was supposed to be within my guidelines, and the person taking my order lied. I was lucky that day I was driving our conversion van and when I felt I was going to pass out ran to it and called the hubs. I blacked out on the phone, lucky us we have GPS apps on our phones that track location and he was able to find me and get dropped off and drove the van and me home. Have also learned that starbucks frozen drinks are not our friend and do the same thing to me. I sleep it off if I'm at home and rarely eat out alone unless it's familar food. Why mobic? PostOp bariatric patients shouldn't have NSAIDS. I only know one person who takes them and that's because she has to take opioids for pain and the docs decided to swap her meds Sent from my SM-T350 using Tapatalk

6 days post op. Having trouble.
GAWildKat replied to MauiLolly's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Also, Could try if you can afford it, Isopure drinks, they are expensive, but it's short term. It gets you the protein and keeps you hydrated during the day. However, 6 days postop I was still doing protein shakes mixed with water and water only per the doc. Sent from my SM-T350 using Tapatalk -

Anyone regretting this?
GAWildKat replied to Queen Sherri's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was tired and it was late. I didn't mention I'm also disabled. I let a lot things not get too me and tend to push myself hard to be equal to better than others. My closest friends know my disability and medical history. Almost everyone knows I had the surgery however. When I explain that it was because my docs chose that course of action for me to help treat my heart condition they take it better than the presumed vanity of "I want to be skinny". I don't care what they privately think. I had once person I had to distance myself from after she made hurtful comments to me over the surgery. The sad thing is her doc has suggested she do a consult as well because she is a type 2 diabetic now. But she won't go. I even I offered to go with her. Nope. Oh well. Not my circus. Not my problem. I think I'm one of the few who felt better the day I went home from the the hospital than I had the last yr prior. I have a heart condition that got me approved for surgery. The burden of knowing I shouldn't die in 5 yrs wasn't weighing on me. Yeah, I had nausea, but as a migraine suffer. It's par for the course. It gets easier, gas X is your friend in the early weeks. Why do I feel suicidal ?
GAWildKat replied to Mucheca's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You are right. I didn't have issues with food being a mental crutch thankfully. Depo provera caused me to gain over 100lbs in less than a yr despite me telling the docs something was wrong. It took me 17yrs to convince doctors that I couldn't do it alone. Once I had the weightloss counseling and surgery I did well except a couple of weeks when my old meds hit my system and I had anxiety, OCD, and self deprecating behavior. Thankfully my husband saw it for what it was and adjusted til my behaviors faded. Sent from my SM-T350 using Tapatalk -
Why do I feel suicidal ?
GAWildKat replied to Mucheca's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Know if you have taken antidepressants and some other mood altering meds most are fat soluble. Meaning once you lose weight the drugs you have taken in the past and are currently on will affect you again in very odd ways. Some behavioral side effects could manifest. I wish I had been warned. That was an awkward 2 weeks or so around ppl. Sent from my SM-T350 using Tapatalk -
Why do I feel suicidal ?
GAWildKat replied to Mucheca's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This might be a personal question you do not want to answer on a public forum but I'm asking so you can answer for yourself. Have you ever taken antidepressants before? Surprisingly antidepressants are fat-soluble and the sudden weightloss that comes from ketosis causes them to flood the body. And they are known to cause suicidal thoughts. By all means, please get help. But if this is a possible contributing factor it will help to know the symptoms should taper off as the meds clear your body. But you sound like you need to be monitored. As others have said, the changes in the hormones, and such will play with your mind if out of balance too. I am available to talk if you need someone as well. I'm 2 yrs out. It gets easier. Sent from my SM-T350 using Tapatalk -
Day 1 post op - my surprises
GAWildKat replied to B.Annie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I never weigh myself. I'm 2 years out. I let my clothes speak for me. I don't own scales. I let the doc's office weigh me and that's it. Immediately postop you are bloated from all the IV fluids and the surgery itself. I don't recommend weighing for the 1st month at all. Just let the change in clothing sizes let you feel good about yourself towards the end of the 1st month. I'm very laid-back about being overweight or a more normal weight. I had surgery for 2 reasons, I was overweight, but I wasnt depressed about it. And more importantly, I have a heart condition that forced me to lose weight. Bypass in my case was the best choice because I'm also disabled. My hubs had to tell me to go clothes shopping when I couldn't fit in his jeans anymore (I cheated and stole his 1st) I wore a size 40 waist at my largest and he wears a 34 waist. I just didn't want to buy clothes I would wear a week or 2 at most. Turned out to be a smart move. I got maybe a week or 2 in his jeans before he made me go buy smaller sizes. Day 1 post op - my surprises
GAWildKat replied to B.Annie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was home on day 3. I was surprised I didn't need pain meds and recovered so quickly. I was told to walk by the doc, and I did. My fitbit recorded 7miles that 1st week. Then I was told I did too much. What? I can't walk Sam's, Kroger, and walmart in the same weekend? Apparently not. At least I wasn't at goodwill or the mall, right? Day 1 post op - my surprises
GAWildKat replied to B.Annie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had surgery Feb 2 years ago. The day of surgery the anesthesiologist gave me too much stuff and I was out from 10am til until 11pm. Whoops! My husband was going to bed to sleep and I was waking up. I did hurt a lot the 1st night and into the next day but by the time I went home I was off my pain meds and back to a normal routine minus heavy lifting. I know, I'm odd. High creatinine level 6 months out
GAWildKat replied to Mindy78's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Creatine shows abnormal kidney function. I can't tell you how it works in humans, but in cats, yes. It's a symptom of kidney failure in them. You may not be drinking enough water/noncaffinated drinks depending on your other meds. I need a minimum of 80oz of drinks a day because of my 2 cups of coffee and dehydrating meds. But ask what can be done to lower it. Sent from my SM-T350 using Tapatalk -
I eat bread, but very thin slices, in fact, my husband has to cut them, and they are small and I might eat them once a week because I become constipated even with miralax daily., same with rice. Sent from my SM-T350 using Tapatalk

Vitamins/food/sipping
GAWildKat replied to Kierajay's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have an app on my phone that reminds me to take my vitamins and calcium supplements. I take my 1st calcium supplement with my coffee in the morning and my 1st multivitamin 2 hrs after my last cup of coffee since milk blocks iron absorption. After that it's every 3 hrs or so on a schedule til bedtime. Sent from my SM-T350 using Tapatalk -
Not that I'm in menopause yet, however, I've been in perimenopause for years. Is there anyone like me who can't do hormone therapy and if so what options are there for menopause and perimenopause? Sent from my SM-T350 using Tapatalk

Help?!! Does insurance cover the vitamins and protein shakes???
GAWildKat replied to Jmf's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had medicare and medicaid at the time, so not sure. There should be a patient rep in the surgeon's office who can help you with that. Sent from my SM-T350 using Tapatalk -
Help?!! Does insurance cover the vitamins and protein shakes???
GAWildKat replied to Jmf's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
As a rule, no. There is a B-12 nasal spray that is covered by insurance and it comes with multivitamins as a bonus, but it is not routinely prescribed. I think there are shakes that can be filed on insurance. But the question is, how far out from surgery are you? If you are several months out like I was, I got the preop list months in advance. I found out how many shakes I needed to drink pre and postop, worked out how many scoops each jar of protein shake had, and bought a jar or two a month in my normal grocery shopping leading to the surgery. I spread the cost over several months on a disability budget mind you. Sent from my SM-T350 using Tapatalk -
Home post op and constipated
GAWildKat replied to BGCSTP01's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It depends, I had semi slow bowels prior to surgery. I'd have a bm 1x/day prior to surgery most of the time. But it took miralax and fiber to jump start things. But I had stay on the miralax and fiber routine. It wasn't unexpected in my case. Sent from my SM-T350 using Tapatalk
