    I'm so ashamed

I agree with the above posters. One of the things my NUT told me before surgery, was take each day anew and just work on that day. I try to do that. We've all tried the fast food options however there are few choices in that area for us postop patients. My fast food choice is Chick-fil-A, the grilled nuggets and fruit cup are good choices for us. Salads are ok, but I suggest bringing your own dressing. I can't really offer any other advice other than love yourself. My breakfast is a protein shake or protein bar, so no help there.

    Surgery done today!

I take an ambien and a unasom atm. But without the ambien I can't get to sleep, the unasom keeps me asleep. I also can do the 36hr awake stretch and I'm a very grumpy person. But I didn't sleep much in the hospital mostly during the day, somehow they left me alone during the day and visited all night. My own bedroom was a welcome sight.

    Surgery done today!

my days and nights are still all messed up. today is my one week post op surgeversary...ugh I'm lucky, I take ambien for sleep. Although I wasn't allowed it in the hospital, as soon as I came home I restarted it and got back on a normal schedule. I'm still annoyed abt that. I have chronic insomnia, the NP didn't warn me she was taking me off the ambien for the hospital stay. Worried abt me taking hydro and ambien together, sheesh. Been taking both within a couple of hrs of each other for yrs....sometimes it helps to take a good medical history... Anyway, looks like the OP is on her way to a fast recovery. Other than the lack of sleep I was the same way. Recovery quickly and lose those pounds!

    Surgery done today!

Yeah, you are doing great. My surgery was at 10am, I didn't wake until 11:30pm. They gave me ativan to control the nausea preop and I slept through recovery, the trip to my room, the np doing her visit....everything. Then woke dead awake at 11:30pm and noone would give me an ambien to get me back on schedule. It was awful having my days and nights messed up!
  5. Tylenol or you may have to get a prescription pain reliever. I'm in that place now trying find medications that will work for my migraines. Good luck.

    Weight Goals & questions

I lost my 1st 75lbs in 5mons. I have abt 20 to go. So yeah, everyone is different!

    Stevia sweetener

I use it for everything I prepare for myself. It's a plant based sweetner that doesn't raise blood glucose levels. Get the packets and try it in your coffee. Some people have adverse reactions to it. I didn't. In fact, it's the only sweetner that doesn't trigger migraines with me. I use abt 2tablespoons in my cuppa, but to me it never tasted all that sweet.

    Swimming

I was swimming at 6-7 weeks postop, well mostly walking through the pool. I had a shoulder injury that kept me from doing a lot of things then, heck even now....still nursing it.
  9. I'd ask the place you got the latte from if the soy milk is unsweetened soy. I'm guessing it wasn't. You did have a case of dumping syndrome. I think it was after my 6 week appointment I tried to test the waters and tried what Dairy Queen called their low sugar ice cream in a tropical blizzard. I got all dizzy, sick and passed out. I managed to call my husband and let him know where I was and a friend dropped him off to drive me home. So it can be very dangerous to have the type of dumping syndrome I had. Be very careful as you heal.
  10. I am the nonworking one in my house. However, my husband did take time off for my surgery and recovery. Like otherfs above, he had to use his PTO while staying with me. With my permission when he was asked what surgery I was having, he told his bosses. They made it very clear if more time off was needed he could take more. They wished me well and offered to help should we need the help. I wasn't aware that he wasn't to disclose the surgery to employers.

    Eating after RNY

I had surgery in Feb, I was told that in the beginning, say the 1st month about all I would be able to eat was a portion about the size of an egg. as the stomach heals and relaxes you should be able to eat food abt the size of 1 cup total by your 1 yr anniversary. Don't rush the process. And good luck!

    Good fats?

It's not so much that fats are bad. Too much fat and/or sugar can cause dumping syndrome. Dumping syndrome is generally not a great experience. I personally seem to tolerate a moderate amount of fat, but sugars make me sick. We should all try to achieve a low fat gram percentage post op. I try to follow my gall bladder postop recommendations and shoot for 16grams or lower fats. Ask your dietician what you are expected to achieve.

    Need advice please!

I'm 6.5 mons postop and I know the struggle those first few weeks postop. I didn't start losing weight right away either. My surgery was in Feb. I didn't notice any weightloss until May. I don't own scales so I only weigh at the doc. My husband finally had to tell me to go buy new clothes because everything was way too loose on me. So relax, heal and take the time to mentally adjust to the weight loss. It's a huge change in a short time. I went from a 18/20 to a 9/10 in 4.5mons. I'm still adjusting to being skinnier!
  14. I didn't have strictures so not sure what to tell you, but I started soft solid foods at 4 or 5 weeks postop. I'm 5.5 months postop and other than needing laxatives daily, I've had no issues postop, which is it's own pain in the rear... I do hope it gets better for you. Have you tried things like refried beans or pureed chicken to attempt a variety? Just thinking out loud here.
  15. At this stage I started having dizzy spells because I wasn't eating enough carbs. Had the same problem on the preop diet. My family doc prescribed a glucose meter to track my levels and adjust diet accordingly. So ask if that's needed.
  16. My question is were you prescribed anything for nausea, if not ask for meds, I was prescribed zofran postop, it helped enough that I could manage well enough. I already have migraines so eating while nauseous is normal for me. I won't say tough it out but rather ask the doc about options.

    Decaf. Coffee

I asked the doc about the coffee, its the caffeine some people dehydrate too much to be safe drinking it, decaf is acceptable.
  18. Already had the surgery, 3mons postop now. As some know, riding season is on us. Normally riding with the hubby is an afternoon ride and we stop for lunch and/or dinner to accommodate my eating schedule. Fluids are a non issue as I own several camelpaks to use on the rides. However, we have a group ride/vacation planned for August this year, and the big ride day is a 12+hr ride day in the North Georgia, Tennessee, and North Carolina Mountains, there is a stop for lunch planned, but Breakfast and dinner are on our own. I can scarf a boiled egg for breakfast, but what can I pack as non perishable Snacks that meet the dietary guidelines postop? Nuts I already tolerate well and eat on occasion as a boost if I feel tired while out running errands. So I thought about that as an idea. But I need veggies I would think. Can y'all help me? Tricia

    Dumping syndrome ?

I'm 3 mons postop and the only time I had dumping syndrome was the day I tested my limits and ordered a tiny blizzard from DQ, made me so sick I had to call my husband to take me home. I can have tic tacs and often do. Have had no trouble with fatty foods at all. But I keep portions small.

    Weight Lost!

Next week I will be 2mons postop, I've lost 15lbs since surgery, I lost 30, just before surgery. I would love to have lost 25lbs in my 1st month. Now that I am in the gym hopefully the fat weight will come off faster. Overall I cant complain, I feel better than I have in years. I enjoy going to the gym it's loads of fun. And I look forward to skinnier clothes in my future.

    Headaches

My disclaimer here is I have migraines, narcotics are also a migraine trigger for me. My surgery date was Feb 2nd. I get my migraines around my cycle. Guess when my cycle was? If you guessed just before surgery, you'd be correct. I had a migraine the morning I was admitted for surgery, Unfortunately the surgeon couldn't change my pain meds for surgery, so I had my migraine for an extra 2days. As soon as came home I stopped the hydro and let the migraine run it's course before resuming it for a few days. Ask your surgeon or nurse practioner if there is another pain med that you could take instead that might be less of a headache trigger. Some people have some success with tramadol/ultram, but it might not be best used in this case. And it triggers migraines with me after one dose

    Need a quick answer.

I was born with a well endowed backside, even as a skinny person. I got a large belly after 3 csections, otherwise I'm top heavy. My belly has shrunk a lot, I don't look perpetually pregnant all the time anymore.
  23. Hi all, How much is the avg weightloss in the 1st month postop? Especially those of us who were borderline qualifying before surgery. Postop I have lost about 18lbs and am thrilled., I weighed in @182lbs over the weekend. However, my clothes sizes haven't changed since surgery. I'm still wearing a size 18 in jeans. Any thoughts? Surgery was Feb 2nd.

    Need a quick answer.

I saw my surgeon Wed, weighed in, I wanted to cry. I lost 3lbs since my surgery on Feb 2 putting me @195. This was my 5 week followup appointment. I'm frustrated. I'm still losing inches in my waist, I had to start wearing my husband's jeans because mine no longer fit. Even his jeans are almost too big for me, but, I don't think I lost enough to drop another size in mine yet.. i have followed the diet faithfully, kept my portions small, none of the bad stuff, I just don't get it, neither does the surgeon's office. Unlike many of you I don't have a NUT, the office doesn't offer that service. So I didn't get the counseling that so many of you seem to have. I feel hopelessly lost. Support group is a joke, one of the nurses spends an hour lecturing the group about the postop lifestyle, there's no time to interact with other patients and just socialize. I feel overwhelmingly lost. I know I'm rambling but I don't know what to do.

    February

I did my 5/6 week followup yesterday, only lost 3lbs since surgery. I've followed the diet religiously and was walking the same weekend I came home. My avg walks are 5-7miles 3-4 days/week. I meet the personal trainer next week so maybe I can get some help. I just want to cry dang it. I feel like I hoped for something that won't happen. I feel very alone and frustrated right now.
