I'm 3 years out and salad is still hard for my pouch. In fact I have a hard time with veggies in general. By the time I get my Protein in I don't have room for veggies or fruit so when I have it ( which isn't to often) I need to have just them without protein. So sad I loved my veggies! BTW I'm 3 years out.

Let yourself heal. Our bodies are recovering from Major Surgery. It is totally normal, also our Calories are way lower than our body is used too. Take your time, get your Protein in and drink your fluids. We can become dehydrated real quick. One thing my Dr. finally told me that while you are first getting just fluids and protein in Protein drinks count towards our fluids, this was after I was so stressed out about not getting in my fluids. But check with your Dr because they all have their own guidelines.

Ugh! I'm starving
shedo82773 replied to sharonrose's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is a HARD week for sure!! But...I can remember being so afraid to eat real food!! I was on Protein drinks 2 weeks before my RNY and 4 weeks after. So when I could go to soft foods I was afraid to eat anything. But...my hubby bought a Watermelon and I remembered my PA telling me anything I could blend I could have!! So I thought to myself watermelon is mostly Water and real soft I'll just chew chew and chew some more. ( I didn't blend it) Well, let me say that darn watermelon gave me the back door trots in the worse way!!! It scalded my bottom!! Well to this day ( 3 years out) I have not had even 1 bite of watermelon!! Funny stuff. -

You will be successful in your journey because you are learning as you go!! You are applying your knowledge and following your Dr and Nutritionist guidelines. I think we all think at one point after our WLS "What the HECK did I do to myself" no matter how excited we are it is definitely a learn as we go Journey and each of us have a different path to go on. CONGRATULATIONS!!! And KEEP ON KEEPING ON!! -
Can we please talk about Starvation Mode for a minute?
shedo82773 replied to DeletedMember's topic in Rants & Raves
B-52 That might be true as you stated. But...EAT MORE LOSE MORE is more than likely for the average person...but a WLS person is in a much different scenario. We try to eat healthier than your average person does to lose weight!! We focus on Protein and a person who didn't have surgery might just be focusing on foods that aren't that healthy. I personally buy into the scene that WE NEED more Protein and less Carbs not complex carbs but bad carbs, so to speak. With WLS people they are usually trying to combine healthy choices with their exercise. As we knowthis is what our Dr.'s and Nutritionist tell us to do. It takes a balance to get results that we crave!! -
Liquids taste horrible to me!
shedo82773 replied to DogRescuer's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I for one have had a very hard time finding a Protein Drink I could tolerate. I liked Atkins protein drink and bars also for a bar Iliked POWERCRUNCH. Finally after all of this time and spending more money than I could count on different drinks to just give them away I found GENEPRO unflavored Protein and it doesn't have a taste at all. Now I am a coffee drinker and I make myself a LATTE and whisk a scoop of GENEPRO in warm Water to mix it and then add it to my coffee. You can use this in anything you want. It has 30grams of protein in 1 scoop. I love it!! -

Hi DogRescuer I am 3 years out, I can say I had the same thing happen to me, everything tasted like minerals very strong. I still have it happen sometimes it will taste bitter. I also have been blessed with what I call a super smeller!! I can smell things that noone elswe smells. Like Cigarette smoke. YUK Noone smokes here and sure not inside. ( my daughter smokes outside) but I ca smell it very strongly. Also I use to love onions and garlic....NOT the smell makes me sick. Hubby cooks with both all the time!! Even going thru McDonalds for my SF FF vanilla LATTE the smell of french fries and old grease make me sick!! I don't know why this happens but I have heard others talk about it too. Hopefully yours will pass!! Good luck -
Just remember "NOTHING in sometimes means NOTHING OUT!!! You just keep track on how long you go without. If you feel like you need to go I would call my DR. before taking anything for it.

MSUJESTER I won't say I wish I had it done sooner for sure. I really don't think I was ready for all it takes to be successful!! I have said before I know 3 people that had their Gastric Bypass at least 18 years ago and each person has had problems with theirs. One has gained every # back, one has gained most of theirs back and the 3rd hasn't gained any back but she is mentally unstable and has weird food habits!! If you do your research you will find that back when it was called stomach stapling so many people didn't get good results at all they have real bad absorption problems even more than we do now. In fact one of the peeps that had her stomach stapling she has allergic reactions to her infusions. There have been so many improvements made in the years since plus there are so many support groups for WLS peeps. Most of the DR'S now don't like the RNY to be referred to as Stomach Stapling because of the negative things about the old way of doing surgeries. Now they do them without cutting your whole stomach widely. So many improvements!! I am so HAPPY I waited until I was 57 years old. When I was younger I don't think I was at all ready for this incredible journey!! -
That is right but my Dr didn't say I couldn't chew gum. I have been an avid gum chewer all of my life. I was on another site and we were discussing chewing gum and I said I had never swallowed my gum, and lo and behold that very night I swallowed my gum!!!! Luckily I didn't have anything happen but WOW I got a little scared. LOL So what I learned NEVER say NEVER!!! LOL

BTW I really really need to get my Driver's License changed!! I have fibbed about my weight forever!! Even the weight that I have listed is a LIE!! When we went to Mexico for my hubby's WLS when I went thru Customs the guy kept looking at my DL and then looking at me. LOL He did this about 4 or 5 times and then he kept saying WOW you look Good!! I was kind of embarrassed because he just went on and on!! LOl After I have lost my 124#'s there is a huge difference in the pictures. I don't want to give up my old license I would like to keep them as a reminder to myself of how FAT I was. But here in Oregon it is not legal to have 2 licenses I guess I will have to do what is right!!. -

Preteen with growing weight problem
shedo82773 replied to Chicken Lady's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
You are being a GREAT FRIEND!! But....I was a Mother who had fought her weight my whole life!! My daughter who is now 36 years old had a weight problem in Jr and thru her High School years. Now when she was around 7 years old mind you all she had ever seen from her mom was one diet after another. Well, she told me in her child-like voice, "Look, mom, I'm skinny down!" This totallyBROKE my heart!! So guess what I did, I never taught her anything about eating healthy or portion control!! WHY you might ask, because I didn't want her to grow up hating herself because she couldn't control her food intake!! I didn't realize until she was grown that she was teased terribly about her weight. I figured she could deal with her weight as she got older. Now hind site I HATE that I didn't help her when she was younger!! She now weighs 270#'s. Has 4 kids ages 15 to 8. Has Diabetes on both sides of her family!! Has no idea how to lose weight healthily. I failed her as a child trying to protect her from the BULL SH** I went thru!! So I really commend you for wanting to help her mom and herself. Try to teach her now about eating the right way and how to eat the right portions. Maybe you can save her from the heartache of obesity. IF ONLY I WOULD HAVE BEEN SMARTER about this junk!! -
Anyone buy vitamins in Mexico?
shedo82773 replied to webdwarf40's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I'm not sure about the vitamins but....my hubby had his WLS in Juarez, Mexico in June. Well, it was not a good experience, to say the least. He had to bring $50.00 to the hospital besides paying cash for his surgery, the $50 was for pain meds after he was discharged. They didn't help at all. It was like they didn't have the ump that the U.S. had. When we left our driver (who was Hispanic) lived in El Paso but went to Mexico to buy his prescriptions because of the cost difference. If you are looking for a good deal on your Bariatric Vitamins you should check online. I buy CELEBRATE capsules for $15.00 a bottle of 90. I usually buy 4 bottles at a time so I don't have to pay S/H. I really don't think that is to high. -
Pre op diet questions since reading my book last night
shedo82773 replied to LifeRejuvenated's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
As everyone has said, follow the guidelines that they gave you. I will say this much anything you can do now only helps you with your upcoming journey. Practice Practice makes perfect. You defintly don't want to cut your calories to love before it won't allow your body to heal li8ke it should after surgery. After surgery we have our tool to help us eat less calories. Hang in there. Come to this site with your ?'s for sure but...do follow what they tell you to do. It is very IMPORTANT to start making the changes now. -
I'm so very sorry High Functioning Fatman!! I lost my Mom to Lung Cancer 12 years ago!! That emptiness just never goes away. I miss her everyday. She wanted to wait until she had Medicare before she went to the Cancer Dr's. So she was to far gone to fight it. So sorry again!!

I am not judging anyone!! Like I have anything to say when I quit smoking 4 times but....my daughter and her husband started vaping to quit smoking. Well she went back to smoking and he quit for quite a long time but his job wouldn't let them smoke or vap so he went to chewing and now full force smoking again!! We have heard thru the news that Vaping can cause what is called POPCORN LUNG!! Doesn't sound to good to me!! I also wanted to say when I got PG with my daughter at 23 I quit smoking about the 2nd time then. I put my Cigarettes in my kitchen window and told myself there they are if you think you can't make it!! That helped me so much. Just knowing they were there if I needed them. This might be something to help you thru the rough Patches. Who knows. As I said before Good Luck!!

Man I can so relate!! I have had Chronic Dry Mouth and Chronic dry eyes also. I was told that it is the medications I am on. I don't know if you are on any medications but some can cause this problem. This is why I chew gum everyday, it helps keep my mouth wet. At night I also wake up with my mouth so dry it actually hurts. I usually get up and go to the bathroom and rinse my mouth out. Lo and Behold it keeps coming back!! LOL

sex drive, and depression
shedo82773 replied to crissy79's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I have been totally sexless for the past 4 or 5 years!! It has nothing to do with my hubby, I love him more than ever. We have been married for 43 Years and up until 4 or so years ago, we had the BEST SEX life ever. Have been going strong for all of those years. So this is totally not me. Well I have Fibromyalgia and Arthritis ( Osteo and the beginning of Rheumatoid) I have been using the FENTYNOL Patches for the last 8 years. Well I just read the side effects and guess what it causes low sex drive. Just that medications and I'm on numerous meds Thyroid and high blood pressure meds. Lots of medications that cause low sex drive. BOOM scares me but I am going to talk to my Dr. soon. Just throwing that out there. -
Well I am a non-smoker that has quit 4 times!! And always went back to it for whatever reason. Heck I quit for 20 years and went back to smoking due to empty nest syndrome. But I quit with Chantix 8 years ago for the very last time. The thing is I smoked for the first week taking the Chantix. I set my quit day on the calendar and that morning when I got out of bed I did NOT even Think of SMOKING!!! I have no desire to ever smoke again!! This is the very first time ever that I didn't crave one during stress or loneliness or just because!! But I agree with your 16 year old. I do think you are biting off to much at a time. I'm also surprised that your Dr didn't tell you to give it up. I had a Dr tell me when he ask how long I had been quit that he would be doing a nicotine test before my surgery. Nicotine can cause ulcers is what I've been told and it slow's down the healing process. I know it is a hard thing but you might want to wait until you can concentrate on one thing at a time. Good Luck.

Can we please talk about Starvation Mode for a minute?
shedo82773 replied to DeletedMember's topic in Rants & Raves
I agree I don't think Weight Loss Peeps are in the Norm!! There should be studies done on just WLS peeps. I have seen many times that when people say they are on a true stall that if they throw more Protein and more fluids into the mix they can start losing again. Also if you up exercise. I have heard people say that they don't think exercise is that important because they lost their weight without it but I can tell you at first yes you lose your weight almost like magic!! In the beginning, it is true most of us lose weight easy. But when you get further out from your surgery I know for myself that exercise is my saving grace. I am not perfect in my eating program and I feel that if I didn't walk 4 miles 4 to 5 times a week that I would gain. I lost my weight in 6 months and I lost below what my Dr's wanted me too. They felt like I was losing muscle instead of fat. I lost to 117#'s and I have only gained 8#'s in my 2 and 1/2 years. I have pretty much exercised the whole time consistently. To me that is a WIN WIN DEAL!! I don't feel like I am any way special and anyone can reach their own goals be that whatever they wish for. Good Luck everyone.
