A patient died after surgery with Dr. Elias Ortiz at A Lighter Me!
Edavidson replied to SuninVirgo's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Thank you honey for your response, I was very curious. I don't usually do FB as I am on the computer for 12 hours a day at work. Have a good evening and I am looking forward to hearing about your success. On another note, before I go, I have been asked not to reply on anything under the original posting. It is someone's concern that we are harming the reputation of her physician by discussing some of the negative issues regarding WLS. So I will keep up with you on another topic site. -

Edavidson replied to SuninVirgo's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I am so cold all of time. Before my surgery I was always hot and flashing, now I freeze to death all of the time. I have to wear a sweatshirt at work at my desk. Has anyone else had this problem. No one has ever mentioned it so I was just wondering. I have no more hot flashes. I am 61 years young so I guess I should be happy, right! -

Future Skinny Girl: I am so happy that you are going to take that extra step. I am sure you will be just fine. I totally agree with WLS, I would just like to see more patients take a few extra steps before they begin their Journey. I don't blame my physician for my problems, I believe that I would have had a positive outcome had I been more proactive with the status of my health before I began. People do die from all kinds of surgeries, physicians are people too, they can't save everyone. However, we can lesson the chance of these things happening if we are true to ourselves about health pre-op. Thank you for responding and you will be feel much more confident after you know you are in good health going in. Good luck to you on your journey to a new, healthier life. -

I don't believe I said a word about Dr. Ortiz. I was not bashing any physician, I simply stated that we should take the time to consider what we are doing when it comes to our health. Anything can go wrong in surgery and I am the first to admit that I should have considered the status of my health before I made my decision. I also stated that most people never have a problem. I think that you misunderstood my post. I am just saying that sometimes bad things can happen when we make decisions regarding our health. I don't know Dr. Ortiz and I certainly am not going to bash someone I don't know. -

I have not posted in a while, I have been so busy. I have lost 108 lbs. and July 10th I will be 7 months post op. I am still throwing up constantly. I have gotten to where I hate to eat because I know I will be sick for hours. I know that most people do perfectly fine. It would be my wish for anyone thinking about weight loss surgery have a lot of testing done before you go through with the procedure, especially if you are going out of the country. Sometimes when we want something really bad we don't stop to ask ourselves if we should or if there might be a safer way. This, is a major, life changing surgery and it is better to stop and consider if it is really the right thing to do. I wish I had... yes I have lost a lot of weight and everyone is always saying how good I look but I am really paying a steep price. You may not have a single problem but someone will have to go through what I am going through and I would not wish this on my worst enemy. I am so tired of being sick, having heart burn, feeling like my chest is going to explode. Will I live longer now that I am thinner, maybe. But my quality of life has been diminished drastically and it is my fault because I didn't stop to ask myself if I should. I just jumped in the water and started drowning. For all of those people who are about to go on this journey i wish you all the best and pray you will be one of the many who do just fine. -
Height Weight BMI and Lbs lost so far!?
Edavidson replied to alindsey's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I have been trowing up since the day of my surgery. I can only eat a bite or two before I am sick. I tried the chew, chew, chew. It doesn't work for me, meat makes me really sick. I can't eat much and I throw randomly throughout the day or evening. I stay hungry all of the time. I would rather not eat than to be sick. How is your weight loss coming, do you get sick at all. -

I was sleeved on December 10, 2014. I have just passed my 6 months post surgery date. I am down 101 lbs. from 317 to 216. Size 24 to 16 and I feel so good. I still have a problem eating and throwing up but I guess I am used to it. I was losing 8 to 10 lbs. a month but last month I only lost 4 lbs. I hope to meet my goal by my 1 year anniversary. -
Missed Mentrual Cycle and not pregnant
Edavidson replied to banksdea's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
gastric surgery is a major operation. it really does affect your entire body. I have heard of people getting depressed, extreme exhaustion, so I guess it should not be a surprise if it turns out to be the surgery. -

Edavidson replied to banksdea's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
If you don't have a change soon, you might want to go see your GYN just to make sure nothing is going on. You never know what can happen after you have surgery. Scar tissue, hernia's and who knows what else. Just to be on the safe side. I had problems after my surgery that were life threatening. Please follow-up and don't let it slide. -

Do you exercise strenuously? I have heard that some women miss when they are very active? I really don't think that the surgery would be the culprit. -
I just got my surgery date!
Edavidson replied to kraface's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Congratulations Cara, this is the beginning of a new life for you. After you get home from surgery and the weight starts to come off you get this enormous feeling of relief. You will notice that the more you lose the energy you will have. It is not easy, the surgery is just a tool and if you use it wisely you will have success beyond your dreams. Good luck to you and we will all look forward to hearing about your accomplishments. -

OMG! everyone has done so well. -
Everyone is so different, some have a lot of pain, some have no pain or very little, some get sick at their stomach and some do not. They put a nausea patch behind my ear before surgery but I still was so sick at my stomach They gave me morphine and really strong nausea shots. I was in six days the first time but most people are only in the hospital for two days. It is very rare to have have major complications, I was just one of the unlucky ones but I am so happy with my weight loss and the way I look now. I have lost 91 lbs. in five months and it is just amazing. I can't be still and I am walking all of the time. I put on my comfortable shoes, out the door and I don't go back until my legs are killing me. You still have to work at your diet, especially after five or six months out. You start to want things again that you shouldn't have. The goal is to take all of your food in moderation. This is a lifetime commitment. Don't eat too much or you will pay for it with terrible gas or nausea. Trust me, it is worth it all.

Type 1 Juvenile Diabetic getting sleeved.... Soooo Ready!
Edavidson replied to Litzy's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Litzy: Your story touched my heart, I almost started crying. I too wanted to live again, I would not go anywhere because I was so disgusted with myself. My highest weight was 317 lbs. I was dying, literally. My health had become so bad that I was in and out of the hospital constantly with every problem that comes from morbid obesity. The last time I was in the hospital the Dr. told me I would not live much longer if I didn't do something about my weight. On December 10, 2014 I had my sleeve surgery and five months later I am 91 lbs down and off all medication. I walk three miles everyday and I am constantly on the move doing things I haven't done in years. I feel so wonderful now and so happy to be alive. I wish you all the best and you will be in my prayers. I can't wait for you to regain control of your life. -
New to group. Sleeved 5/18/15
Edavidson replied to GSDMom's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am five months out and still feel like I have chocking feeling. You try to get it up and you can't it really is painful. Almost as bad as taking that one bite to many and you are doubled over in pain This is a lifetime change and I know it gets better over time. we just have to be patient. The weight loss it worth it. I am at a stall right now, I lost a lot of weight at first, I think I have hit a stall and it is really upsetting. I have been walking a lot, hoping it will jump start my weight loss again. I have lost 91 lbs so far and I want to lose 50 more. I hope to have it all off by my first year anniversary. -
BE HONEST SLEEVERS, did anyone think okay they are going to cut half of my stomach off and the weight will just fall off?
Edavidson replied to tamelntre's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I don't know what I am having, but it sure feels like starvation. I would give anything not to feel this way but it is what it is. The amount of weight that I have lost is not normal. I was very sick for three months so I don't really know if my weight loss is from the sleeve or my other surgeries. I do feel better though. -
BE HONEST SLEEVERS, did anyone think okay they are going to cut half of my stomach off and the weight will just fall off?
Edavidson replied to tamelntre's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I did a lot of research and I knew I would have to work hard to get the weight off. I lost way more than I expected to lose but it was due to complications. I can't eat much so I am having a steady weight loss. 8 to 10 lbs. a month. I walk a lot, everywhere. I stalled for about two weeks but when I started walking I started losing again. It is very hard, I could not have done it without the sleeve. The only thing that has really been a bummer for me is that I stay hungry. I was told that when they do this surgery they remove the part of the stomach that makes you hungry. It didn't work for me, I am hungry 24 hours a day. I can only eat a few bites of food and I am full but 30 minutes later I am hungry again. Is there anyone out there that is Never hungry. -
Height Weight BMI and Lbs lost so far!?
Edavidson replied to alindsey's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I had sleeve on December 10, 2014. Five months post-op and 91 lbs. down. I went from 317 lbs. to 226 lbs. My first three months was a living hell, had three surgeries from December 10, 2014 to February 15, 2014. I feel so much better, I am doing things I have not done in years. I walk everywhere, on the weekends I just walk out of the door and walk until my legs hurt so bad I have to give up. -
coleenrenee: I think you are doing great, I only lost 45 lbs. my first month and that was only because i was so sick. So, I think you are doing wonderfully. Keep up the good work.

Using an Endocrinologist as 6 month of supervised weight loss
Edavidson replied to fighton1313's topic in Insurance & Financing
If your Endocrinologist is assisting with weight loss then they should accept your documentation. Make sure you have your doctor send the insurance company a memo stating all of the visits and your need for the surgery. If they turn you down don't give up, keep trying. Good luck -
Honey if you have lost 50 lbs in one month you are doing excellent. That is a lot, I think you are just anxious to get it all off but you didn't gain it in one month so you can't reach your goal in a month. Trust me, you are doing great. You will be feeling better and losing lbs in no time. I have read a lot of posts about sleevers hitting a plateau and once you break that you start to lose again. I am five months and ten days post op and I have lost 91 lbs but it has not been easy. This is a process and we have to work really hard to get to our goals. Take care of yourself and hang in there.

AvaFern: I agree with you, I have a hard time keeping food down so I will try anything that I think might stay. We are all different, I have a steady weight loss of 8 to 10 lbs a month. That is only because I never eat more than I can hold, I am very cautious about not stretching my tummy. It is all about moderation, we all have to keep that in mind. My daughter is like me it is very easy for her to gain weight. Like me she exercises everyday and she eats what she wants in moderation and that is why she has kept her tiny little figure all of her life. When I did the sleeve I never intended to drink protein shakes for the rest of my life or never eat something that I love. I want to learn how to eat to live, not live to eat. Most all of my choices are healthy, but at least once a day I will try something not on my diet. It may only be one or two bites but I don't feel guilty. As long as I keep my calories under 1,000 a day I will be fine and I have been fine. We all have to come up with something that we can live with for the rest of our lives. I don't think about food all of the time now, I have to remind myself to eat. Keep it real, make your diet your own and don't stuff yourself. We only require a tiny amount of food. Don't go beyond that point, that is when you get in trouble. This works for me, it might not work for someone else. You know your body and what you can have and hold. Don't feel guilty, that is what makes us give up because we feel restricted. Just my opinion about what works for me. Some people have to stay strict because they can't eat just one. live your life, keep it real and don't make garbage your main food staple.Work with the tool you worked so hard to get and get up and walk, run, hike, swim. By the way, I am five months out so if you are just getting sleeved by all means follow your Dr.s instructions. After you lose your weight and meet your goal then work on a life time plan that you can live with.

It's like CHOOSING to GET pregnant!? LOW BMI-er here
Edavidson replied to tnkrrbl's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Sleeve surgery is a big deal. You are the lowest weight person I have heard of in all of my research on the internet. You don't have much to lose, why would you put yourself through this very difficult surgery when you are not that heavy. My sister lost 115 lbs. on weight watchers 15 years ago and has kept it off. Your life is going to change drastically after the sleeve and you can't take it back, when they take your stomach out it is staying out. Most people have this done who are morbidly obese. I am five months out and I still have trouble eating. I would give anything to be able to eat some of the food i use to love. Your taste buds change, you do lose some hair, and until you are able to exercise and get your strength back you feel tired all of the time. You should rethink what you are about to do. I have a friend who lost weight on the sleeve and gained it all back. This is not a miracle cure for obesity. You have to work hard at it if you want to lose. When is the last time you tried to diet and lose weight. What ever you decide we will all be rooting for you, but I am not so sure the sleeve is right for you. -
have you ever had orange cream/vanilla ice cream or an orange julius? If you like anything orange you might want to try this. You can't taste the Protein in it and it is the only way I can drink protein without throwing up and I am five months post-op. I use unjury, vanilla powder protein mix or you can get protein mix at Walmart or drug store. If you have a blender, fill it half full with chipped ice. Add one Light N Lively orange, Greek yogurt (80 calories, one serving of vanilla - protein mix. One cup of 50/50 orange juice (half the sugar of regular orange juice). Blend until it looks like an orange milk shake. It is easy to get down without that horrible taste and it is full of protein. You can use strawberry yogurt, and fresh strawberries. If you want an even creamier shake you can use a cup of sugar free/fat free vanilla ice cream. I hate fat/sugar free ice cream but you can't tell in these shakes. I still get sick easy so I just take a few bites of something every few hours. I had a very hard time with my surgery so I have had to do what is best for me even if it doesn't follow the program exactly. I am very picky about what I eat and I never go over 1,000 calories, usually less than that. I was staying so hungry all of the time it made me even sicker. Experiment with your food and try only tiny amounts at the time and of course chew, chew, chew. It really does get better as you learn how to eat the foods that don't make you feel ill. Foods that I use to love I can't stand the taste of now. This is truly a life changing surgery in more ways than one.

I am so glad that you went back to the hospital. I have heard that dehydration happens a lot. You can't eat when you are sick at your stomach or drink. It is so hard to get past the first month or so. Keep us posted on how you are. I am always amazed at the things some sleevers go through.
