  1. I asked mine in my first visit with him and he told me he'd had one patient die (out of a couple thousand surgeries) and it was after the surgery, the person had a pulmonary embolism. Yes, all surgeies have risks. Quitting the cigs is very important. My surgeon requires his patients to quit 1 year before the surgery.

    Constipation

My doc told me to use milk of magnesia. I've only used it once. I take dulcolace twice a day.

    Prep diet

I tried Grape flavored Isopure and it tasted okay. The problem is that one 12 oz bottle of it costs close to $4.50 and that is too pricey for me. I also am using Premier Protein from Sam's Club. For the pre op diet though, I had 4 Adkins shakes a day.

What can I eat @ diner

Yogurt or oatmeal. I'm 2 mo post op and had a salad with grilled chicken the other day (eaten in 3 meals) and it was fantastic, by far the best thing I've eaten since pre op. And it didn't upset my stomach or give me any digestive issues. Finally I'm able to eat more regular foods without nausea!

    24 hrs Post-op

I'm 2 months post op and I still use the patch. The pain continued for 4 weeks post op also. Hang in there. It has been a difficult recovery for me but I sure don't regret it. I'm almost 40 lbs lighter since surgery!

    6 month supervised weight-loss program

I had to do the 6 month supervised diet before submitting to the insurance for approval. I was concerned about losing so much that the insurance wouldn't approve it. My doctor's office told me that it's the first weigh in that they look at, not the last. I lost 30 lbs in that 6 months.

    Stomach making weird noises

I still get that particularly when trying a new food.

    how long did you wait?

Yes, had to do 6 months of meetings with in house dietician, along with all the other tests, requirements before submitting to insurance for approval. Once approved, schedule surgery. From orientation to surgery, 9 months. It gave me plenty of time to learn and research what I was getting myself into. No regrets so far. It'll be worth the wait. Good luck!

    Drainage Tube

I had one with my bypass. It was removed before I left the hospital, 3rd day post op. It was annoying more than anything. The nurse pinned it to the hospital underpants I was wearing, to keep it from pulling down on the incision it came out of.

    Help! TMI Beware

My doc says Milk of Magnesia
  12. I am on Carafate so I can temporarily take ibuprofen for hip and back pain. My doctor said as long as I take the Carafate 4x day, I can take the ibuprofen. I still am very hesitant, however, and am so far avoiding it because my PCP prescribed me hydrocodone. I also take a baby aspirin daily but, again, I have to be sure I'm taking the Carafate. It prevents ulcers.

Dec 30 rny and still in pain?

Wow, you all sound like me except my RNY was 12/17!I am STILL having significant pain in that same area. I got the abdominal binder yesterday and I think it feels worse with that on! I also was prescribed flexeril which is a muscle re!axer and it doesn't help much if at all. I haven't tried a heating pad though so I'm gonna go get mine after this post. Also using pain meds which help except I'm almost out and not sure if Dr will refill.

    Gas 4 days post op

It went on for about a week for me. And don't always assume it's only gas, if you catch my drift!

    Chicago (suburbs) Illinois

Hi fellow Chicago Suburbanites! I am in the far southwest suburbs but I had my RNY done by surgeon Bipan Chand at Loyola University Medical Center inMaywood on 12/17/14. Before surgery, I found a support group at Silver Cross hospital in New Lennox, IL. I attended only one group so far but plan on going to the monthly group from now on. It is a monthly group held the third Wednesday of the month at 6pm. There were a lot of people there the time I went 75-100 people. I probably don't have much to contribute to a clothing exchange. I refrained from buying myself clothes, especially anything new, at my high weight. It was such a downer cuz nothing looked good on me. I plan on buying clothes from resale shops (I.e. Goodwill) as I lose weight as what's the point of investing in it when I won't need them for long? Right now I'm progressing my diet from full pureed to soft foods. I'm feeling a little down this morning as I'm missing not being able to eat things I used to enjoy. I know it will get better once I start the regular diet in a couple weeks and be able to have more variety instead of the same things day after day. It will all be worth it.

    TODAY IS MY SURGIVERSARY!

Wow jonathanblue, I am inspired by you! I'm just 12 days post op but can't wait to start seeing some significant results and getting more active. I am already weighing less than I have in 10 years and I'm just getting started! I'm so excited! Thank you Jonathan blue and all my bariatric pals!
  17. I am just 12 days post op with my rny and I feel certain that I made the right choice as I was free to choose rny or sleeve. As others have said, I knew the rny is 'the gold standard' and has been being done for many years so there is so much more research and results with it. I also felt I was going to be more successful with the rny because I have a sweet tooth and the malabsorption factor. The vitamin part is no big deal, what's taking 1 or 2 more vitamins?

Feel like I'm going to explode

A suppository helped me. I'm only 3 days out so I'm sure there are more challenges ahead for me. I love this support site! It is very helpful!

Unbearably painful post op - 4 days out

I am 3 days post op. I was supposed to go home yesterday but was having trouble getting in enough fluids on my own, plus feeling nauseous and pain after sipping clear liquids. The enemy is gas big time. I kept walking the hospital hallways, trying to get the gas to pass. It wasn't working. The pressure in my abdomen was horrible. I was in tears. Then my surgeon prescribed a suppository. About an hour and a half after having that inserted, the gas finally started coming out. Plus I started having small bowel movements. Then I started feeling much better! The nurses, practitioners and doctors told me your bowels kind of go to sleep and you have to get everything moving again. So I was released today. I'm starting the pureed diet now until my first follow up appt on Jan 2. I only had 2 oz. of protein shake this evening but will start trying other things tomorrow. I'm going to take it slow as I can and make sure first and foremost that I get in enough liquids. So, for me, a suppository is what got me going and feeling relief. I will use them again if necessary. If you're having that much pain, call your Dr right away. Don't just lie there! That's the worse thing you could do!

    December 2014 Surgery

Hello all, my surgery was yesterday, 12/17, @ 8:30am. It went very well my surgeon said. I felt really bad all day yesterday with nausea and pain. My back hurt a lot which I was told was from lying on the operating table. I kept using my pain pump and slept on and off until 5am today. Today I feel better. They took out the catheter out @ 6am and I've urinated on my own twice since then. I had to have xrays done while I drank a barium solution so they could watch for any leaks. No leaks were detected. I walked the hallways of the hospital and now I'm sitting in a chair having my first protein drink - Hormel healthy shot - 23 g. protein in 2.5 oz. bottle. I diluted it in ice water and only taking in 1 oz. Per hour to start with. I also progressed to taking pain meds orally rather than IV. Hopefully I'll go home tomorrow.

    Hello, New here.. (scared)

My surgery is in 3 days. I've been feeling both scared and excited but I'm actually getting more excited as it gets closer. You're gonna be alright. Keep on tuning in to this site. I have found it to be very comforting and a huge help with my fears. I've had it with living with all this extra weight on me. I'm sure you and everyone else can relate. I'm so ready - ready to restart the rest of my life! The liquid diet I'm on now isn't fun, I'm hungry all the time but no one ever said this was gonna be a piece of cake. I already feel weight coming off and it feels fantastic! This liquid diet will make the surgery easier for my surgeon and safer for me. I have a 21 yr old son and he has never seen me below 250 lbs. I'm going to wish I'd done it much sooner, I'm sure! Keep on keepin' on, I say! What a way to start a new year! This time, that same old resolution will stick! Hallelujah!

    December 2014 Surgery

Dmaddox1 I was thinking the same thing re: making a New Year's resolution to lose weight that is really going to pan out this time!! I have been heavy for 30 years now so I can't believe this is really happening! I am nearly in tears! I started to do this WLS about 10 years ago and chickened out. Not this time! I finally again have insurance that will cover it (thanks to Obamacare) and I know afterwards, I will be saying to myself, why did I wait so long? I am so grateful to all on this support website. It's great, so helpful! Happy holidays everyone! Despite starting this awful liquid diet today, I feel great, hopeful and I hope all of you are feeling the same way!

    Goodbye to real food

I went to the movies yesterday and had popcorn! Today I start my liquid diet. I know it will be hard, much harder than afterwards, since my stomach is still normal size. Happitam, thanks for the encouragement. I started this WLS journey last March with seeing the dietician monthly and, of course, all the other Dr. appts. and tests. I also wasn't having any real issues with missing foods as I did well with seeing the dietician. I gave up a big diet pepsi addiction and many other things and lost 30 lbs on my own. I went on vacation last month, then Thanksgiving, and gained weight back. So as I get closer to the big day, is when I started realizing all the foods I will have to do without and it's hard for me. I feel like I'm losing a best friend! But, all that being said, I would, of course, rather have a life with this weight off and am more than willing to give up these foods in exchange! Or I wouldn't be going through with this! I start my liquid diet today, surgery in 1 week. I am excited and nervous at the same time. I am confident that I am going to do fantastic and look forward to what my life will be in the future. :-)

    New Here! Hello all.

Hi Derek, I'm a newbie, too. Today is your big day. You are in my prayers. I hope we get to hear about how you're doing afterwards. My date is Dec. 17 and I'm starting the dreaded liquid diet today. Best of luck to you! Here's to a fantastic 2015!

    Goodbye to real food

My surgery is Dec 17 and I go on liquid diet in 1 week. I'm grieving over having to let go of the foods I'll have to live without that I love, like sweets and popcorn! Thinking I should go to the movies and have some hot, buttered popcorn before the liquid diet starts!
