    Embarrassed by Weight Loss???

It can be sticky when you're asked personal questions by folks who aren't close enough to share personal info with. Here is my script - Q: "How much have you lost?" A: "Some of what I want to." Q: "How much more do you want to lose?" A: "Until I feel healthy and ready to stop losing." Q: "You're getting so skinny." (ugh) A: "Thank you." Q: "How are you losing?" A: "Eating less and lots of exercise." Q: "I can really see your weight loss in your _____." (fill in the blank: neck, face, chest) A. "Thank you." Q: "I'm glad you decided to do something about your weight. I was worried about you." A: "Thank you." Q: "Are you worried about having saggy skin?" A: "There is so much that I could worry about in life. What do you think about the presidential race?" It also helps to mentally think "idiot" after I say thank you to a somewhat rude statement or question.

D - Awesome!!! I can't believe how quickly you have progressed. You R a runner!!:clap::cursing::sneaky::clap: I have been riding at 6 am, but there isn't alot of time to ride a long distance. So, I've been trying to improve my average speed. It just doesn't seem like exercise if I'm not wheezing at the end! LOL. I have also become a friend of the stairs at my building. The School of Nursing is housed on the main floor. So I hike up to the 4th floor (all the higher it goes) across the building, and then back down the staircase at the other end. How often you ask? Well, #1) everytime I get a really annoying e-mail, #2) when I get a notification of yet another meeting, #3) when I look at my watch and see that I have lost a considerable amount of time in work without a break, and #4) when I have the urge to eat and it isn't time for a snack or meal. Doing that route a couple times makes me want water, not food! Hoping for a fine weekend, with a long ride each day. Take care all. KY

J - maybe you should try picking up 2 65-lb 7 year olds (or so). Less political correctness involved and you can make it seem like a game. Besides, those darn sexual harrassment claims are so annoying to sort out. :w00t: MeS - I really like the Slim Fast Low Carb, but not how it comes out of the can. I put mine in the Magic Bullet and add ice and sometimes some strawberries, or even 1/2 of a banana. You could add some milk to thin it. Whirl it together and it's a really good breakfast on the run. The other thing that I like are the Whey test tube looking things that have 42 grams of protein in each. Trouble is, you can only drink 1/2 at a time (since your body can't use 42 grams of protein at once) and 1/2 of a tube is not too filling. But it does give you an option for a day when you are having a breakfast that is not high-protein. D - I always have that same problem when I ride to school. So, I don't when I have to lecture. I wish I was one of those southern belles that don't sweat, they only "glow". But, egad, I'm not....I'm a regular old radiator. I glow red with heat and feel the sweat running down my back into my shorts. Of course, on the bright side, maybe if I don't smell so good it will keep folks from visitng too long in my office - LOL! :cool2: Over and out! KY

    Coffee and Tea

The first couple of weeks post-op I could not handle coffee at all. It tasted weird and made my tummy cranky. I thought "Oh no! I've lost my best friend!! (cue sappy organ music)" But, over time my taste for coffee has returned, although I drink MUCH less that I did before surgery. Almost never have any after my morning mug - and if I do, it's decaf. :biggrin2:

BG - the nurse's union in Eastern KY has more-or-less bankrupted the Kentucky Nurses Association because of their protracted strike. Very frustrating! KY

TL - I heart my seat. I sit on my "sit bones" so there is almost no friction on my lovely buttocks. If I ride 7 days in a row for long mileage I get a bit sore, otherwise no problem! How are you doing after your traumatic fill? All back to normal? KY

OH - I know you probably have your paper all written by now, but I couldn't resist adding my suggestion. I think that Ford should buy large numbers of Toyota &/or Honda vehicles. They may even be able to negotiate a discount, like the rental car companies do. Then they put Ford logos on them and sell from Ford dealerships. Even if they had to sell them at a loss it would probably be less of a loss than they typically have each quarter. Just thinkin' KY

I have a Cannondale and I love it! Purchased in 2001 and it still is like new. Rides great, only TLC is keeping it clean and tuned up. Here's a pic of my beloved Lil' Red: :wink2: My husband has a Cannondale also. After having these 2, it would take a lot for us to consider any other brand. Good luck! p.s. sorry the picture is so ginormous. I couldn't get it to size down. sheesh! :cursing:

    I'm experiencing hairloss, Need suggestion!

As I understand it, hair loss immediately after surgery can sometimes be an after-effect from anesthesia. Versus delayed hair loss which can be related to nutritional deficiencies, hormone shifts, and/or rapid weight loss. Regardless of the cause, supplementation with zinc and Biotin has been shown to help some people. If we are hitting out minimum 60 g. of Protein a day, then increasing protein probably won't help much (but it isn't going to hurt!). It is helpful if you can identify new growth (or if your stylist can). Hair loss without regrowth is a whole different set of causes/solutions. There are combination products available at GNC, the Vitamin Shoppe, etc. for hair health. Beware, some of them are ginormous pills. But I am using a powder that I add to my morning Protein shake - can't even tell it's there. Finally, if anyone is experiencing hair loss along with severe fatigue or paleness - then seeing your MS for a CBC might be a good idea. Hair loss can also be from a deficiency of Vitamin B-12, which will result in anemia. Easily fixed with B12 shots. Sign me..."Hoping to not be svelte and bald!" :tongue2:

    Has anyone taken up Bycyling?

I'm not an expert like Traci (aka HoosierPoms), but I'll take a stab at answering your question... Info assembled from my friend, the internet... A road bicycle is a bicycle designed for use primarily on paved roads, as opposed to off-road terrain. In general road bicycles have drop handlebars and multiple gears, although there are single and fixed gear varieties. A hybrid bicycle is a bicycle designed for use on roads and bike paths, combining features of a road bicycle and a mountain bicycle. In general, hybrids use mountain bike gears to make riding in hilly environments easier, and have an upright riding position similar to a mountain bike. Handlebars are neither downturned like a road bicycle nor flat like a mountain bicycle. Rather, they have a slight upturn, providing for a more upright seating position. A mountain bike is a bicycle having a sturdy frame, handlebars straight across, wide 26-inch tires with a knobby tread, as many as 21-24 gears, etc., that is suitable for both road and off-road use, but is most commonly used off-road or on unpaved paths. I tried to paste pictures from the internet on the message, but couldn't. If you google the terms, you can find photos.

Personal challenge between HP and D!!!

12 Steps for the scale and/or posting addicted (adapted without permission from AA*) We admitted that we were powerless over our addition, that the scale and/or posting on LBT was overtaking our life. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity (or at least the level of sanity we started at...). Came to realize that the Power greater than ourselves was NOT the frequency that we stepped on the scale, nor the number of postings on LBT. Made a decision to turn our scale over to a safe person who would hide it well, and not hurt us when we wrestled with them to try and get it back. Or alternate: Made a decision to step away from the keyboard before anyone could get hurt (such as carpal tunnel from excessive typing). Admitted to our friends on LBT the exact nature of our scale and/or LBT addiction(s). We were entirely ready to have our HP remove 18 lbs. from our bodies on by Oct. 6th, even if we didn’t weigh ourselves more than one-a-week. We humbly asked our HP to remove our craving for the scale and/or posting on LBT. Or alternate: We whined incessantly to anyone who would listen, thereby burning calories to help our HP out in achieving Step 6. (Whining burns approximately 145 calories per hour) As time went on, we made a list of all the stupid, idiotic people that thought it would be a good idea to cut back on weighing and/or posting, and vowed to take away their favorite thing. Continued to hang on by our very fingernails to the goal of weighing once a week and/or overcoming the posting addiction. Sought through prayer, meditation, searching the house for the scale, begging, and/or looking longingly at the keyboard to have the power to carry out this goal. Made apologies to everyone on the list in Step 8 for even thinking such ugly things. And on Oct 6th, celebrated like a big dog because there is 18 lbs. less of us to love and/or we haven’t acquired any repetitive motion injuries (also think about how the “enter” button is getting such a break…I’m sure it will extend its life span tremendously). * To any true 12-steppers reading this, please understand it is meant light-heartedly and not to be offensive to any one.

    Taking Antibiotic Capsules?

Do NOT open the capsules. Do NOT soak them to break down the shell. The medicine is in the capsule for a reason, so that it will dissolve in a specific spot in your GI tract (often times after your stomach). There are are a number of things that affect what you should do: 1. How long have you been banded? 2. How restricted are you? 3. Have tried to take even one capsule to see how it goes? I have a medication in capsule form that I have to take everyday. In the words of my surgeon "Let's see how it goes, it may not be a problem." Sure enough, it goes through just fine. I wouldn't ask for a switch before I at least tried one capsule. Just my opinion, from a long-time nursing career and Nurse Practitioner in Training
