How did you get over your addiction?
JerseyJules replied to JerseyJules's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just want to live a normal life, where if i go out for Pizza with the kids I eat a slice and am full, not 4 like I do now. I dont drink soda but I do love sweets. I need to cut the sweets to an occasional treat and have more normal healthy portions. Should be too hard for me, I dont eat that bad, just a little too much. My old attempts to lose weight were way to restrictive for me and when I did indulge in carbs it was hard to stop and I went back to the usual over eating. As my doctor explained to me 2 years ago when I backed out, my body simply wouldnt let me lose the weight. -

So its kind of like a good old fashioned smack with the wooden spoon as a deterrent? "Purging" does not sound attractive in the least bit...But then again neither is 300+lbs for my bones and joints.. -
They always have to fix what aint broke and break it in the process...

How did you get over your addiction?

No, I backed out in 2015 last minute.I tried on my own for the past 2 years to lose weight and am still right where I started. After some soul searching and descision making, Im on the chopping block for Feb 27th 2017. I had to know I was ready and this was my only option. -
You had me at BOOBS! LOL

Approved but scared.

I got nervous the day before my surgery date 2 years ago. And backed out last minute at the hospital. I wasnt ready mentally and didnt tell myself I really need this. I was afraid of change. Now 2 years later Im set for surgery once again on the 27th of February. Im not backing out this time. I want to live longer and more healthy, I know Im teetering on 300lbs now but in the future can easily go up to 350-400lbs given my genetics. Why fight my genetics any more? Being nervous of change is normal. This time around I did way more research and asked around more. The common answer I got was "it was the greatest decision I ever made"....Followed by "I wish I did it 10 years ago." -

Im also eat out of habit, like after dinner I want my cup of coffee and something sweet. I know the proper foods to eat, but just eat too much of them then add in the indulgence with some sweets pushes me way over the edge. -
Im going in Feb 27th. I backed out the first time 2 years ago. It was a mental road block for me, but I now realize I need to do this before I get sick. How are you feeling since surgery and how difficult is the liquid phase?

i had my 1st appointment on Jan 5th and just completed the entire process and am scheduled for Feb27th. It depends on how fast you can knock out the required steps prior to surgery. -

Many stories like this have steered me towards my decision to just get the sleeve in the first place. I dont know a single person in my life that had the Lap Band that has been successful. -

Well I made up my mind on the VSG procedure and have my surgery date set for February 27th 2017. I have to just complete the Endoscopy procedure next week and that will be my last step. I had to do a sleep study this time around also. This time around I have been researching tons of stuff, watching tons of Youtube videos and talking to way more people who have done the process. This time I am ready and want to see what its like to be a normal sized person for once in my life. -
After 93 pnds how can I gain healthy weight (muscle)
JerseyJules replied to bariatrica14's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
FYI its is MUCH MUCH harder for a woman to gain muscle than a man due to the testosterone levels. To gain solid muscle you will really have to work at it as compared to a similar sized man. -

I just had my Psychological eval and my Nutritional Eval today as well as saw a sleep specialist. I start my at home sleep study tonight. -
food....Seriously post pictures of your foods!! Im considering the VSG surgery and really want to know what to expect and would appreciate of some of your recent or long time sleevers would share pictures of your meals and portion sizes so I can get an idea what to expect down the road following surgery. A big stress factor for me in deciding to do this or now is fearing the unknown after surgery. I want to have a good idea what to expect in the days, weeks and years to follow. If Im going to do something that cant be undone I want to know EXACTLY what Im getting myself into. Thank you in advance for your replies.

What Was Your Biggest Post-Op Surprise?

Ever try making your protien shakes more concentrated 1/2 the liquid, so you get all the protein in? Oh, I make my protein goals. Just found it strange the way dense protein was so filling. Besides, my nutritionist would rather have me getting my Proteins from solid food.. Im a big strong guy that works out semi regularly now. I know the surgery will cause me to lose some muscle but being 290lbs with 35% body fat is not healthy for me. Did you lose a lot of muscle at first and were you able to put some of your muscle back on? I want to be lean not skinny. I am not sure though. I would say I was moderately active before my journey started. Lost weight before surgery by cutting down on food portions, and increasing activity. As I am not yet 6 weeks post op, most of my exercise has been limited to cardio. I won't know how much muscle I've lost till I resume my full exercise schedule. You lost 64 lbs in 6 weeks so far??? -

I actually eat pretty decent believe it or not. Im not a big fried food or greasy food eater. I eat fast food on occasion less than one meal per week usually. I love lean meats and chicken salads. My issue is I over indulge with portion sizes as a result of never learning proper portion sizes as a child. I have been overweight all my life. 248lbs in 8th grade and wound up senior year in HS getting down to 218 the lightest by eating good and working out. I aintianed about 225-240 till I was about 25 but always just slightly over ate portions. I went through 2 police academies in 1998 and 1999 and didnt lose a single pound went in at 250 came out at 250 despite all the exercise. I know my diet was poor, with larger portions and snacking late at night. I do like sweets also but rather eat a nice steak over a doughnut, I just often make poor choices and too much of it. An example of a poor decision would be I would eat say 3 egg whites and toast for Breakfast at 9am then by 11 am would get a bacon egg and cheese and 2 doughnuts at Dunkin Doughnuts, then eat lunch at 3 or 4 then dinner at 6 or 7 then go to the gym and eat again late at night like 2 more times after dinner... I know if I can get to a decent weight i would be 100% able to maintain it for life, its just getting there is the issue, my body will just not let me right now. Im s -

Its kind of silly that Im even concerned about eating much less food..But I guess after having an abusive and toxic relationship with food for the past 40 years, Im curious what my future holds. From the looks of it most of you are just eating normal portions. This has been my biggest issue all of my life, portion control... I actually eat fairly decent 80% of the time, I just eat too much and then when I eat the junk food it pushes me over the edge. I think this surgery is EXACTLY what I have needed my whole life, as my body does not allow me to stick to a decent diet.
