Gastric Sleeve Suurgery Friday Dec 19.
klock replied to klock's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Thank you all for your well wishes. The surgery went fine and recovery was manageable. I had a sudden drop in blood pressure Systolic hit 50, they were concerned about a leak, scared the hell out of me ! Turned out to be a vaovagal nerve response. I will be going home tomorrow, if it was not for the BP issue I probably would be home now. -

It took me nearly a year before I decided to pursue WLS to help me with severe deterioration of my hip and knees. I was scheduled for Hip replacement but cancelled after discussing WLS with my Orthopedic Surgeon. He felt even though I have a relatively low BMI that significant weight loss would greatly increase my success with hip replacement. My Bariatric Surgeon and General Physician, agreed. I then battled between Bypass and Sleeve for several months, ultimately it was my decision to pursue Sleeve ( Bariatric Surgeon said either would work for me ). I have prepared myself mentally and physically for this surgery and used this Forum as a crutch with great success. I'm 3 days (4 total ) into my clear liquid diet. I'm surprised that I'm not experiencing hunger issues but I do keep drinking liquids and eating sugar free pops like crazy, weight is already coming off. I'm confident I have made the right decision. Thank you all for sharing your experiences.

Why did you choose VGS instead of Bypass and any regrets.

MisForMimi I too am a " pre-op ", with VSG scheduled for Dec 19. I have researched medical articles and online sources such as " bariatric pal ". The best conclusion I have come up with is that there is no longer a " gold standard " for WLS. Advancements, changes in approach , statistics, all are influential but ultimately it seems like the final decision rests with the patient ( provided other criteria are satisfied ). I ( as of today ! ) am still positive on VSG, I feel it will work best for me based on my specific concerns. Good luck with your research, I hope you find the method that best suits you. -

MisForMimi I respectfully disagree with your conclusions regarding Scstxrn's comments. I interpreted Scstxrm's generalization regarding children of WLS moms to providing an environment of healthy eating which would benefit their children, I see no reference where RNY contributed to weight gain in children. Perhaps it would have been better to state that " increased ability to eat healthy food ".....applied to Both RNY and VGS which certainly would have a positive effect on preventing childhood obesity. -

Thank you Skywalker , I'm feeling skinny already ! Yes I agree, I will proceed with VSG and not RNY for the reasons you pointed out. Dec 19th.... just want to get it done and start my recovery. -

Kindle It seems everyone I speak to in my area has had the RNY with varying levels of great results. However, they all mention strict limitations or problems occur. Many of them refer to the VGS as the " new" option and feel they may have considered it over the RNY but are not disappointed with their choice. Congratulations on your success, it's comments such as yours that make me comfortable pursuing VGS. -

NavyMom2006 Congratulations on your success. 30 Pounds in 2 months is great, keep it up. I must admit dropping 90 pounds in seven months also sounds good ( your friend ), looks like your on the same track as her. The more testimonials I see like this makes me much more confident with VGS, Im on deck for the 19th. -

I may be wrong but RNY would create issues for an endoscopy, not so with VGS. I believe a portal or separate laparoscopic approach would be needed with the RNY to scope the stomach. A colonoscopy ( large intestines ) should have equal success with either VGS or RNY. -

Thank you all for sharing your experiences, I believe I will stay with my decision to pursue VSG, it just makes the most sense to me. -

samuelsmom I figure over the past 30 years of yo yo dieting I have lost well over 400 pounds, unfortunately I have but back 500 pounds. My surgeon asked when I first noticed I was heavy, I responded at about 9 months old. I can see the benefits of both surgeries, difficult decision. -

Mayaresearchmom And you have just hit on why I'm still considering RNY. While I do not currently suffer from GERD it concerns me, and my surgeon tells me literally word for word what you said about long term documentation. I was not familiar with VGS to RNY for long term weight loss. -

MichiganLady and Lipstickchic Thank you for your insight for choosing VGS, being able to tolerate NSAID's and avoiding long term malabsorption are at the top of my list. I'm feeling better about selecting the road less travelled in our area for WLS. Although, it scares the hell out of me that my group does so few VSG's but then again it is a less complicated surgery. I guess I would be more concerned if VSG was considered a more complicated surgery than RNY.
