I go by weight. I literally weigh everything, even nearly 2 years post op. If I stop for a couple weeks and then go back and weigh what I have prepared for myself, it has always crept up a little bit. Unlike the bathroom scale, the kitchen scale is your best friend!

No faith in myself after honeymoon phase
SuperDave replied to tenseintexas's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
If you are really that unsure of your commitment level, why would you do this? I mean seriously, if you aren't ready, don't do it. I know we are all supposed to be supportive and all that, but there are a LOT of people on here who should not have had such a life changing surgery when they simply were not ready. This is a BIG deal. Do not go into it lightly. There is no shame in holding off until you are truly ready and willing to handle the challenges ahead. -
I don't seem to be losing very much...
SuperDave replied to bini120's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You are averaging 4 pounds weight loss per week over a 6 week period. That is phenomenal! Stop comparing yourself to others, it is pointless and frustrating. Everyone is different, focus on YOU! -
Hello and welcome! I'm a 45 year old male, almost 2 years post op, and I can tell you it is all totally worth it. I was scared too. I thought life would never be the same, and I was right! Everything is better. I am no longer controlled by food. I am no longer afraid to try new things. I enjoy so many more things than I used to. Yes, my diet is boring now. Who cares? There's more to life than pizza and beer! I won't lie, there were rough spots along the way, but they are a distant memory. No worries. You have got this!

Significant others and family
SuperDave replied to hillij25's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is not what you want to hear, but you did this, not him. You cannot expect everyone to change their bad habits just because you did. Of course, this could also be a sign of other problems, like lack of respect and communication. Anyway, it sucks sometimes, but it will get better. I hated being around anyone eating anything for a while, but it no longer bothers me. -
Weight loss Pre Surgery
SuperDave replied to Blondie1970's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It really depends on your insurance. They all have slightly different requirements. You could call them and ask. -
Sounds like you are doing great. Keep it up! You have got this!

Days 2 and 3 were the worst for me, and then it slowly got better. By the end of the 2 weeks I felt fine. Maybe you did just get lucky!
-
Now that is funny!

Just relax and follow your plan. Really. Your weight loss will start again as long as you are doing what you should be. I went through several stalls in the year after surgery, including one that lasted 2 months. I really thought I was done at that point, but I went on to lose another 40 pounds. Don't worry, you have got this!

Search for Protein Plus Peanut Flour on Amazon. The only ingredient is peanuts. No salt, sugar, fillers, preservatives etc. It is good stuff!

When I go out, I order off of the kids menu. It's a little awkward at first, but really not a big deal once you get used to doing it. Or if a kids menu is not available, order meat and veggies of some type. I can get 4-6 meals out of a typical restaurant serving.

Having a hard time sticking to my diet
SuperDave replied to Kimba Maria Wiggins's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
So at 344, 5 percent is 17.5 pounds. That is their goal. What is your goal? Don't do the minimum. They want you to lose 5%? Lose 10%. Of course it is easier said than done, but taking the easy path is what got all of us here. Change your habits for real this time. It will all be worth it in the long run. I'll say it again, this is not for them, this is for you! -
Having a hard time sticking to my diet
SuperDave replied to Kimba Maria Wiggins's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I didn't have a specific goal, just had to show weight loss, whether it be 1 pound or 100 pounds. The main purpose of the pre-op diet is to get you to change your habits. It will be easier to succeed after surgery if you have already changed the way you eat before. Don't think of this as showing them what you can do, think of this as your time to prepare yourself for what is ahead and show yourself what you can do. When you want to cheat, don't think about them, think about YOU! You are in this for YOU! -
I rotate between 3 or 4 different brands. Premier is one of them, right now I'm drinking Muscle Milk Light. I have found that after a couple months of one thing, I start having problems choking them down. Switching to something else takes care of that problem. I'm down to 1 shake a day at this point, and I don't really need to be drinking them anymore, but they are so convenient that I can't completely stop! It's weird, I thought that once I didn't have to drink them I would have no problem giving them up, but that has not been the case. Stupid healthy habits!

I don't remember being cold when I was on the liquid diet, but since I hit my goal weight I am always freezing! It is a strange feeling, since I don't remember ever being cold my entire life. That just isn't a problem here in Arizona. On the bright side, it is nice not being sweaty all the time, and I look forward to the savings on my air conditioning bills this summer!

I've seen a cauliflower crust recipe a few times online. Haven't tried it though. I'm sure a google search would find it. To answer the question, I didn't eat pizza for a year. It was my goal to not have any cheat foods for 1 year, mostly just to prove to myself that I could do it. I had a small slice twice since then, both times when I was on vacation in Vegas.

Fear of failure
SuperDave replied to tobhappy&healthy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You really have to get past the fear of failure. Don't look at this as another diet, we all know those diets worked and eventually failed. This is a new start. This is a new life. This is about truly changing your relationship with food. I am 18 months post op and I no longer have to think about what I eat. It is all habit. Don't worry about failure, only worry about what you can control. If you are truly committed to changing, and I mean changing your life not just your diet, you will succeed. You have got this! -

Sleevers who started over 400 lbs or BMI of over 70
SuperDave replied to Dashofpixiedust8's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was 450 at my peak, I am now 185. The pain is part of the deal. It is worse for some than it is for others, but everyone has it. It will pass. Of course I have loose skin, but it is not as bad as I was expecting. You will definitely have some too, it would be unrealistic to think that it won't happen. But you are still young. If you stick with your plan and make sure you stay hydrated and nourished, you will be amazed at what your body can do to overcome the damage that has been done. Basically what I am saying here is, don't worry about the things that are beyond your control. You can reach your goal, but it is completely up to you whether or not that happens. Follow your surgeon's and nutritionist's advice. Do not let yourself fall back into old habits. You can worry about loose skin later. At this point just focus on doing what you need to do. No doubts, you can do this and you will. -
All food tastes bad now.
SuperDave replied to cindyam1957's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You will definitely get past this. Nothing sounded or tasted good to me for a few months and watching other people eat made me feel queasy. Eventually, all that good stuff will taste great again and you will wish you could go back to now. Take advantage of this blessing in disguise while it lasts! -
I really believe comments like these are meant as compliments. Try to take them as such. It makes life easier. There really is no reason to take offense when none is intended. Even if it is intended, who cares what anyone says? You are doing this for yourself, not for them.

My freakout didn't happen until the morning after surgery, but at that point it was a little too late to change my mind! Of course I wouldn't change anything now. The last year has been incredibly eye opening and life changing. Just put your doubts behind you and move forward. It will be worth it. You have got this!

Arizona/Phoenix Sleevers?
SuperDave replied to Thx4dinner's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, if you go to the initial bariatric surgery seminar, they have you fill out a patient info form. They will then contact your insurance company to check coverage and requirements before they call you back to schedule your first appointment. It was pretty convenient. Overall I thought they did a pretty good job with the entire process.
