Is a colonoscopy a requirement for the sleeve surgery?
scstxrn replied to wannaBthinsoon's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would find it odd as a requirement, since I've never heard of it before your post... but at the same time, it would SUCK to have a surgery that removes much of your ability to eat and then find out you had cancer. Especially a cancer that required removing part of your absorbing what you eat. For that reason, if I fell in the age or I had a family history, I'd have the test before I had the surgery... just to be sure. My husband had to join the colonoscopy club early due to family history. I'm grateful he did... but I would want him to have a whole other series within just a few months of having bariatric surgery, as his nurse wife... because I worry like that. -
It helped with mine. According to uptodate, a phenomenal medical software that my job gives me access to, Paroxetine (Paxil) low dose is the only SSRI specifically approved for menopause hot flashes - but Lexapro is among those that have been used successfully, as well as Celexa and Effexor. You can't take Paxil with Tamoxifen due to weakening of the Tamoxifen. The link to that is here: http://www.uptodate.com/contents/nonhormonal-treatments-for-menopausal-symptoms-beyond-the-basics Paxil can also trigger mania and feeling like things are crawling on your skin, if you have any predisposition to that - and Paxil and Effexor both have a horrible discontinuation syndrome so you have to wean verrrrry slowly. For me - Lexapro helped with both the hot flashes and the rage. There's a great little thing called a chillow that was nice for the night time hot flashes, too. And damp wash rags frozen flat for the back of my neck, chest and wrists... until I got the meds. I would have 25 or more flat frozen wash rags in a stack (layer with wax paper to keep them from sticking to each other) in my freezer at any given time.

Eggface has a whole page dedicated to different pureed meals; I strongly recommend her. That said, I cook a meat and gravy, add a little mashed potato flakes, and stick blend.

@@BLERDgirl I had the same, and because of it I couldn't take hormone replacement... Lexapro has helped tremendously with the mental stuff and the hot flashes for me. It is nice to get the 50 from the hysterectomy off... then another 50 from new mom hood, then another 50 from college.. then I'll be just a few pounds shy of my goal.

Super Nurses With Sleeves (Support Group)

@wrightle; Have you tried the clear Isopure. They taste horrid, except coconut (to me... but I eat coconut snowballs)... but they don't take up any more room than water and they have 40 g protein / bottle. -
If it's healthy sweets that are your craving... check out eggface's Protein ice cream and protein fudge. OMG!

1. From a psych perspective, GRIEVE. So many times we use food to smother our thoughts or feelings - at least, I did. 2. Make a list of why you want to lose weight, and make it personal. Is it so you can play with your kids, get off your meds, avoid knee replacements, wear sexy jeans? Whatever it is - rate it 0 to 10, how important this is to you right now. 3. When you are in a situation where you want to put off plan in your mouth, rate it 0 to 10. Come up with a reason that out ranks it, and focus on that until the urge to chew off plan happens. 4. Eat something on plan if you're hungry.

What "musts"should I purchases pre op?
scstxrn replied to Countrygrrl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No kidding from me. Yet one more example of different surgeons, different rules, I guess. I don't have a banned list of meds - and the ability to take NSAIDS (as well as oral steroids) when I need them (other unrelated health stuff) was the biggest deciding factor on the sleeve vs any other surgery. -

Ok, so y'all I watched my surgery video yesterday. I am so glad I chose a technician; he was midway through suturing the sleeve, didn't like the shape, went back and stapled some more off the bottom, and finished suturing.. then he picked up all his 'mess', then he went shopping for clots.. that's a big deal in terms of healing and reduced pain. He just did such a pretty job. -
Anyone else?

More Gas-X strips Liquid Ibuprofen Many cups of Sonic Ice in the freezer Broths, Popsicles, Jellos of your choice Water Comfortable walking shoes.. because if you don't walk, the gas pain will be the worst part. A few pairs of fat pants... because for the first few days your abdomen will be both distended and tender. -
MyssJones, I survived the first five days on broth and red popsicles.... make sure you're walking - walking - walking... it helps with the pain. Sipping CONSTANTLY on water, juice, broth... you'll get your fluid in. Talk to your doc about some nausea meds, though - I can't imagine the pain of heaving. FWIW, 7 days out I felt SO MUCH BETTER.

I am 9 days out now, the pain is minimal without meds, unless I try to do too much... then I hurt. I've lost 15 lbs since the operation. I'm back at work. I'm so glad that I did this, and I'm glad that I used this surgeon. I'm also glad I used Trish.. wls4abetterlife.com; I feel like having her there to translate what I needed (and her list of Spanish to English/ English to Spanish common requests for/from patients) significantly added a level of security to my feelings that only having brought someone familiar with the area could have provided. She was company when I wanted it and she went away when I'd rather be in solitude. I would do it again tomorrow. -
Follow the rules. Cheating hurts.

I ended up coming home early... To quote my nurse, I missed Los ninos... And I am so happy to have seen them. I am still a little sore, but the meds manage it. I got in my walk today and I am drinking chamomile tea now. I find I miss my nurses accents. I am down 7 lbs in the time since my surgery. Dr Ponce has you do 10 days of clear... broth, juice, no residue, pulp free.. Then 10 days full liquid.. Then 10 days cream of and Ferber graduates.. Then 10 days of trying stuff like flaky fish, tender meat. He is more restricted in the first phases to reduce the risk of obstruction and infection, but so far I haven't been hungry at all. Trish gives you a bag of meds and instructions and paperwork before your Iv is out and Dr. Oscar, whose English is as good as any American doc I have worked with, goes through line by line and phase by phase. And I got a great shirt for my after picture from Trish. I would do it again tomorrow, no question. -
How much weight can i expect to lose with gastric sleeve
scstxrn replied to grace1989's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you keep your lbm... Which is muscle and bone.. 20 percent body fat would put you about 160. Losing muscle costs you calories and losing too much bone can lead to osteoporosis. Possible but not wise. -
A total of 4 gasx strips and something that resembled dancing did the trick for me. Oh yeah... And zofran

I have posted a few different places. Int is tiny, most nurses speak Spanish but there has always been someone that could speak enough English... And I am a nurse. The generic meds are all the same names, that makes it easier. I wouldn't bring someone with me... I don't like hanging out when I don't feel good, and trish is all the company a girl could hope for. -

Thanks for posting! I see him in 2 days. Are you on a PPI? Prilosec? Nexium? Omeprazole? That helps with the acid reflux feeling. -
My husband wants me to wear leather pants and a crop top. Seriously. Maybe for Halloween. My 'goal outfit' is a pencil skirt, coordinating shirt, and heels. I miss heels so much. I love all the dream outfits though.

I'm looking forward to this side effect! I did buy a warming pad for my bed, though... can't sleep when I'm *too* cold, as I found out while camping one night in 13 degree weather with a very light sleeping bag. Other than that experience, I've never been *too* cold... always too hot.

scstxrn replied to MrsMurky721's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@MrsMurky721 IDK how motivating it would be for your husband, but mine would respond real well to the statement, "I have no expectation for you to change the way you eat just because I am... however, when you don't bring food I can't have around me - that is a total turn on." I would never SEE cake / Pasta / whatever in his hands again... guaranteed. -

Following the rules
scstxrn replied to Unhappysleever's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It sounds like you're being successful... but why do you not do shakes? Have you tried the fruity flavored Protein supplements? I'm kind of addicted to Nashua nutrition's health smart Pink Lemonade liquid Protein concentrate. It's ugly, I tell you. And Quest Brownie Bars and chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Bars.. Pre-op, those are the only way I can hit 100 grams of protein a day.
