Need support & feedback...
BLERDgirl replied to jordantaylor's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Congrats on all the positives you have; 56lbs is an excellent weight loss. Remember not to compare yourself to others, we all lose at different pace. As for you concerns with ED habits, touch base with your medical team, or seek out counseling now. Even if it's just 1 or 2 sessions for a quick tune up, it better than regressing to bad habits. Especially with an impending wedding that cn bring it's own special set of stressors. -
Vegetarians & Gastric Sleeve
BLERDgirl replied to JenniferP1's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I don't. It's would be nearly impossible on a vegetarian diet when most plant based sources of protein also tend to have carbs. My carbs run a little on the high side but most days I keep it between 50 - 60 carbs/100gms protein/900 -1,000 calories a day. -
I had pizza, but I no longer find heavy breads satisfying. Halfway through the slice I ended up just eating the toppings off. I found a noodle made from mung beans at whole foods. It cooks up with a similar bite as regular pasta, but is loaded with protein. I think 2 ounces has close to 30grams of protein. I don't have it often because it's a little carb heavy.

I typically do aquafit in the AM. Sometimes I also do a 30 min run/walk in the pool after. I make a Protein shake that typically had half a cup FAGE 0% Greek yogurt, a scoop of Isopure unflavored & whatever additives are on hand. Sometime a tbsp of almond butter, sometimes a bit of fruit, sometimes spinach or kale purée. I add lots of ice and drink half before & half after. According to MFP my shakes come in at about 30 - 38 grams if protein. I then eat a regular lunch & dinner is usually Soup or salad of some sort. If I need a snack in the afternoon I will have either an ounce of nuts, cucumbers, or half cup of yogurt I try to keep my heavier carbs in the early part of the day when I am most active. Book ending my workout with carbs & protein keeps me from getting fatigued.

Did anyone fake their 6 months supervised weight loss?
BLERDgirl replied to stephyr's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
How can you fake it? Most insurance companies that require it want documentation and often that has to be verified by medical personnel . Can't he just see his GP? Cutting corners often just ends up biting you in the butt. If the copays are an issue he should let his doctor know. -
Not sure what part of the U.S. You've moved to, but Nordstrom's provides such a service.

Why Getting Sleeved was the Biggest Mistake of My Life
BLERDgirl replied to a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
The moral of the story is THINK before you leap. I'm not gonna waste the battery life of my phone to go any further. Oh yeah, I have zero acid reflux. -
Is / was your nutritionist all that helpful?
BLERDgirl replied to VSGAnn2014's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Yes! Mine reviews my MFP diary as well. -
Is / was your nutritionist all that helpful?
BLERDgirl replied to VSGAnn2014's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
It really depends on the program. Mine is affiliated with the program so she specializes in bariatric. They also facilitate the support groups so they are very in tune with the patients. I saw her one on one at each pre-op visit. She reviewed my daily diary and gave suggestions catered just to my specific needs. The nutrition class was required by my insurance. The one on one visits were part of the program. -

BLERDgirl replied to VSGAnn2014's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Glad to hear this. I am experiencing some thinning in the front of my hair. I have increased my protein to 100gms a day. Hopefully this helps. I just sent an email to my doctor. I may get repeat bloodwork when I go in next month to check my zinc and magnesium levels. -
Is / was your nutritionist all that helpful?
BLERDgirl replied to VSGAnn2014's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
My nutritionist is great. I had a lot of dietary issues to tackle. I'm a vegetarian and I have multiple food allergies. That means I can't eat artificial sugars, stevia, and food dyes to name just a few. Crafting an eating plan was challenging. Our sessions had to be very conversational as I needed to ask a lot of questions to figure out what I could safely eat. I also like that my program utilizes a patient email portal. When I needed to increase my calories or share info and it was not time for a follow up appointment I could shot an email and get a response either by email or a phone call within 2 days. The fact that I have no had an ER visit or hospitalization because of my allergies since surgery has a lot to do with how helpful my nutritionist has been. -
I find that the gym culture during the day is a bit different that in the evenings. During the day everyone their is about business. Young, old alike come in and get down to business. During primetime hours of say 5 - 8pm there is a bit of a social atmosphere. Weekends are similar to daytime midweek hours. This is abut YOU. If you feel self conscious, get a iPod and tune everyone out.

I literally shop everywhere. Online and in store.Online: Old Navy, Kohls, Ashley Stewart, Lane Bryant, Target (Plus size) In Store: Kohls, TJMaxx/Ross/Marshalls, Lane Bryant, Target (straight size) I am especially fond of capris/pants from Kohls. They have name brands like Fila, Nike, etc... and they offer a variety of colors besides basic black. I like tops that Ashley Stewart sells. They are longer than most places. I love Lane Bryants sports bras. Boobs do not move! I like their active wear, but wait until they have a sale to buy.

I was up and down. By week 2 I was bored silly and ready to get back in the gym. I resumed my daily Water aerobics on week 3 but needed a nap every day for about the first month or so.

This is true, but not every program requires a pre-op diet. Mine did not. Also depending on your BMI or any other factors your insurance company may only require a monitored effort to lose weight. I didn't have any comorbidities, but I had a high BMI and other health issues. Nope, not every program requires a pre-op diet. Mine did not.

Weight loss and, bowel movements a TMI thread****

Not at all. One of the ways I know I am eating properly is that I have a good morning BM. I also noticed that I "go" more on my more active days. -
Can't get enough calories to exercise...
BLERDgirl replied to lorilove's topic in Fitness & Exercise
Just to piggyback, the super low calories is just temporary. It's also why your team will order routine bloodwork regularly. They are monitoring to prevent organ damage. -
It could be a stricture or it could just be eating too fast. We always need to remember to eat to eat slow. Not as slow as we did the first month or so, but still slower than we used to. I find I need to be especially mindful of that when I go out to eat with friends because I get caught up in chatting and don't pay attention to how I am eating.

Can't get enough calories to exercise...
BLERDgirl replied to lorilove's topic in Fitness & Exercise
Keep in mind you are very early in your process. It hasn't been a month yet. I tired easily for the first month and needed a nap daily. That's perfectly normal. As for calories and such, you do add them gradually. Protein and fluids are the most important, especially early on. It's also very important to have an ongoing conversation with your nutritionist (if you have a good one) or surgeon. You nutrition goals and needs will change as you progress. I am leery of taking advice from trainers unless they are specifically trained in bariatrics because the needs are slightly different. -

Does your throat hurt after surgery?
BLERDgirl replied to John Michaels's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My throat didn't hurt after my sleeve surgery, but it has from others surgeries. It's a side effect of being intubated. After my sleeve I was fine. They also gave me ice chips and lots of fluids since they encourage you sipping so my throat was never dry. -
Some of us have tummy's of steel and don't get sick. Like the previous poster said, measure everything and stick to your program. You should be fine.

Can't get enough calories to exercise...
BLERDgirl replied to lorilove's topic in Fitness & Exercise
I highly doubt your nutritionist would expect a 6'4" guy to live off 400 calories. Your first week post-op that might be the best you can do, but I'm fairly certain they would up your calories pretty fast. There's also going to be different recommendations for someone having bypass as opposed to a sleeve. Bypass folks have more of a malabsorption factor than sleevers. Variables such as height, weight, sex, and lifestyle all factor into our doctor's recomendations -
Can't get enough calories to exercise...
BLERDgirl replied to lorilove's topic in Fitness & Exercise
I would add more Protein rich items to the Protein Shakes. I always try to bookend my workouts with good carbs and protein. Someone mentioned a few things like adding avocado to your Protein Drink. In addition to that I also add Fage 0% greek yogurt, nut butter and spinach or spinach/kale puree to my protein drinks. I make the spinach or spinach/kale puree by blending it in the vitamix with just enough Water to liquefy and freezing into ice trays. I then add one cube to each drink. I make my protein drinks using water and then pack loads of ice on them. I drink half pre-work out and the other after post workout. This fuels my workout so I am burning fat and keeps my energy up. The additives also keep my calories at a good level and using water & ice counts toward my Fluid goals. That said, give your body time to heal. Your energy will return. Then strive to get some sort of exercise in everyday. Don't get overly focused on calories. I ate 400 calories for the first 2 weeks post op. Then ate 400 - 600 until 3mths post op. From 3 - 9 months I ate between 600 - 800 and currently eat between 800 - 1000. The new tummy is tiny. It can't hold much. As long as that protein level is good you should be okay.
