What to Expect During Year Two After the Sleeve
BLERDgirl replied to VSGAnn2014's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
So good to hear. I am coming up on my one year anniversary. Since I have a longer weigh loss course than most sleeve pts I want to talk about what I can do to continue to lose during year two. I am determined to get to a normal BMI! I'm going to write out some questions to ask. -
I HATE exercising! What Should I do?!
BLERDgirl replied to Sunshine3073's topic in Fitness & Exercise
Find something you like to do that is also fun. Bike riding, bowling, hiking, dancing. etc..... -
I agree with others, sounds like you drank too fast. Remember is super tiny, small sips at first. Walking may help.

Just saw this on HSN this weekend. I may order it. Winter's are challenging for me because my street is small and if it snows heavily I am plowed in. Even though I mostly go to the gym, I like having a backup plan. However I still think something like this is for people with limited mobility. If you have serious health issues, exercise or PT may not be the answer for you.

Wannabe sleeved, sweet addict and kidney stones - HELP
BLERDgirl replied to ShariAnn's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Why not try this eating a balanced diet? Increase your Water intake, Limit Protein shakes to no more than 2 a day and then have one meal of protein and veg. If you are a snacker, plan for healthy Snacks as well. Just keep it simple. Another thing I find helps is to keep a food diary for a while. So many foods we think are healthy are full of hidden sugars and sodium that we are actually doing more harm than good. Hopefully the insurance mess gets sorted out soon. -
6 Days to lose 10 pounds
BLERDgirl replied to Jessica2011Marie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That doesn't sound healthy. I know it's hard to believe, but a few days will not kill you. My initial projected surgery date was pushed back 2 weeks because I hadn't completed my sleep study. Nearly a year later, I can't believe how upset I was at the time. My surgery still happened and all is well. Follow a sensible diet, eat lean and walk or exercise. If they have to push back your date, you will survive. Most importantly you will have enough strength to safely recuperate from your surgery. -
Keep in mind it's not only the calories, but the carbs. I have popcorn on occasion, but rarely. Even then I didn't indulge until I was 6 mths out. Being able to comfortably get in more than 60gms of protein was more of a priority. I currently make sure to get in at least 100gms of protein.

I am on track to reach my goal weight for this year. I have about 11lbs to go before my annual f/u on the 21rst. However for me that will be the halfway point as I started at a really high weight. I do find that now I have to work a little harder. I still keep a food diary, I eat at a minimum 100gms of Protein and exercise 5 - 6 days a week. However, if I don't lose those 11 lbs, I'm not overly worried. I'm confident enough in myself to know it will happen. Just keep looking forward.

Feeling so unsure.
BLERDgirl replied to greatmommy06's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No regrets. NONE. Didn't tell many until 2 weeks before surgery. Didn't ask for anyone's permission so they knew when I told them it was a done deal. They only option they had was either support me or get out of the way. I was fortunate to have had a pleasant surgical experience. This has been not only the best decision I ever made, but also a fairly easy lifestyle to adapt to. -
Eating at Restaurants – Yes, There Is Life After Weight Loss Surgery!
BLERDgirl replied to Alex Brecher's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Magazine
I ate out at 1 month post op. I'll admit I didn't eat more than a few bites, but since eating out with friends and family is such a large part of my life, it was nice to know I could manage it successfully. A year out and I have eaten out more times than I can count and just as many cuisines. -
I mostly do lettuce wraps now. The bread isn't worth the extra carbs and they fill me up too fast. Tempeh, tomato with a touch of Just mayo in a romaine leaf works just as well. If the OTC anti nausea stuff doesn't work, talk to your doctor. Unflavored works for me because I can control the sweetness and also add it to savory items.

Vegetarian here. I do eat eggs, but I also like plain, greek yogurt. FAGE 0% is brand of choice. For Protein supplement I prefer Isopure unflavored and my nutra bullet. It is plain, 100% whey protein isolate with no added flavorings or sugars. I mix the Isopure with yogurt, with vegetable broth, coffee, tea, etc.. I also eat bean, legumes, seitan, tofu, tempeh, dark green leafy veg. such as spinach, kale or broccoli, and cheese. I am allergic to most artificial sweeteners. I can occasionally use sucralose aka splenda, but try not use it often. I prefer to use raw, locally sourced honey but do not use it often. I use the Isopure and make my own Protein drinks. Typically it's yogurt, Protein powder, fruit, spinach and Water. I can also tolerate the Isopure green tea, black and coconut protein drinks. If you are having trouble with nausea, call your doctor and get a prescription for that.

Medications and weight gain.
BLERDgirl replied to tssiemer's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Speak with your surgical team. They will help you come up with a plan for what meds needs to be temporarily discontinued for surgery and what you will need to continue. Do not discontinue meds without checking with them. Even on meds you can and will lose. I take a daily antihistamine (Zyrtec). I sometime have to also take a second pill and/or benedryl. Antihistamine's slow your metabolism. Discontinuing them is not an option. I have chronic uteria & angeodema. Not taking them means I break out in head to toe painful, itchy hives and/or facial swelling. Even though my weight loss has not happened as fast as some, I still have been able to steadily lose. -
Yes it's normal. That will likely be the last place you lose, but it will happen.

I used Scarfade gel as soon as they scabbed. I tend to keloid and this helped flatten the scars and also removed any redness and discoloration. I had really bad facial scarring from shingles and this was the only thing that worked. I then transitioned to bio oil. I have dry skin and my daily routine is virgin coconut oil.

24 days away and shaking in my boots!
BLERDgirl replied to MrsDuq2012's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Breathe Take it one day at a time. Do not compare yourself to others. Drink your Water, get your Protein, EXERCISE BREATHE Hope all goes well for you! This has been one of the best years of my life! -
It depends on how they bill and how the practice is set up. When there is a team approach, you have an initial visit. That s typically with the surgeon, the nurse, NP, PA and nutritionist. Follow ups are then with the team and typically at a lower rate of service. However your copay often does not change. The change is the total amount of the office visit bill. The copay is based on your insurance company's regulations. Depending on insurance a certain amount of post op follow up may or may not be included in your surgical bill. For example I have Keystone 65. I had a $200 copay day of surgery, but did not have any copays for my 2 week, 6 week and 3mth f/u appoints. After that I went back to my regular copay fee for my 6mth appt and I will have a copay for my 1 year f/u in a few weeks. According to my plan I have a copay of $15 for my primary and ANY specialty visit is $45. It doesn't matter if it's an xray, or I see the orthopedist. The lone exceptions are eye doctor and dental visits. My advice for anyone looking into bariatric surgery is to look into everything it entails. Some decisions are made by the insurance company and others by the medical practice.
-
This is not an uncommon practice. Many surgeons do this. If you are not experiencing any complications chances are you will be seen by the PA and/or possibly the surgical resident. You can call your doctor's office and request to be seen by the surgeon, but chances are that may not be able to accommodate you. Rest assured if you have chosen a good practice that the PA or resident are more than qualified to see you for follow up care.

It doesn't mean it's not a good product. Many folks here use it and like it. -
How much protein & cals
BLERDgirl replied to Lexuskela's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
Just a reminder that programs vary as to protocols and nutrition plans take into consideration many variables such as height, sex, age, starting weight and health status. My program does worry about carbs as long as they are good complex carbs, but does caution against refined carbs. Don't worry about hitting 100gms of Protein right out the gate. You have to work up to it. At 3 mths I was probably getting 60 - 75gms of protein. -

Nice review. Just a reminder. Stevia is in the ragweed family . If you are allergic to pollen and ragweed, this will trigger them. -
How much protein & cals
BLERDgirl replied to Lexuskela's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
Common rule of thumb is minimum of 60grams of Protein. However protein helps you lose. Things like hair and nails suffer with rapid weight loss as the body leeches all of it when you are losing. Many choose to up their protein to combat that. I personally strive for 100gms a day. I work out 5 - 6 days a week. I find I have more energy when I maintain a higher protein level. I've also read that many programs are changing their protocols and recommending higher protein intake levels. If you have a good nutritionist or medical person at your program, I would recommend calling and speaking with them about what will be the best option for you. -
Food Regrets Over Time?
BLERDgirl replied to thinner-me's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I honestly don't miss anything. I do get a little tired of eating high Protein, but I work around that by adding unflavored whey protein to sauces and things. If you are not a cook type person I would recommend doing a weekly food prep. I do mine on either Sunday or Monday, but really you just choose whatever day is most convenient for you. Initially it took a while to start, but now I spend less than an hour once a week doing food prep. I boil half a dozen hard boiled eggs, chopped fruit & veg to add to meal and snack. I also make up a pot of brown rice or quinoa to use throughout the week. I may even pre-portion fixings for over night oatmeal or other meals. The upside is I always have food ready to help me make good choices and I never spend more than 15 mins preparing any meal. Other options are to start looking at your local deli or salad bar and figure out what things are safe for you to eat. I think there was even a thread where people shared what Fast Foods where safe to eat. As you can see it takes a little creativity, but it can be done. You can cater this new way of eating to fit your lifestyle. -
Do you weigh yourself everyday? Bad/good?
BLERDgirl replied to wagyu's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
^^^^THIS^^^^ I weight maybe once a month. I focus on eating well, drinking Water and regular exercise. -
I take Biotin, use Jamaican Black castor oil and emu oil. My edges in the front are thinning and have been since around mnth 7. I can mostly hide it with scarves or pin up styles. I keep my Protein at 100gms or more. I'm probably going to try collagen and maybe magnesium to see if that helps. The rest of my hair is great. Still thick and healthy. I have bra strap length dredlocs so I don't plan on cutting my hair.
