  1. Today's NSV - work up this morning and just wanted to stay in the bed. It's damp and rainy, I wanted to snuggle under the covers. However this is a big gym day. 9 am aquafit, then 11 am silver sneakers. So I got up & made both classes. By 1 pm as I was running errands I realized how good I felt and I was really happy I got my self up and went. Some days you just have to push through your natural inclination. Otherwise you never change old habits.

  2. I had an easy time of it. My doctor keeps his patients 2 days. No pain/nausea/vomitting, walked about slowly but easily. Spent my day sipping water/tea/ProSource NoCarb protein/veg broth. Peed a LOT. Day 2 got them to unhook IV fluids since I was drinking well by mouth. Talked on the phone, played on my iPad, did breathing into spirometer to clear lungs, watched tv and slept. I felt a little achy & sore but otherwise fine. I didn't take any pain meds either orally or via pump. I could get in and out of bed unassisted.
  3. Agreed. Sometimes as a treat for myself I mix a scoop of protein powder into my FAGE and pop in the freezer. Left long enough it will take on the consistency of soft serve.
  4. You'll gets lots of different responses because everyone's post op life is different. Mine was really easy. No pain, gas, or nausea. I went home after 2 days. Day 1 - I woke up in recovery. Had to pee. Was able to get out of the bed independently. Was wheeled to the bathroom door and walked in on my own. I had a bit of a wait for my room so I was in recovery for another hour. I peed 2 more times while there. Told the nurses as long as I had the IV I would pee. Asked & started on ice chips. Finally up in my room. Walked in and got in bed unassisted. Peed some more. Made phone calls. Doctor's came around. Declined pain pump. Was given tea, Water, ProSoruce nocarb Protein supplement and Jello. Refused jello. (I think it's disgusting). Day 2. - Walked around the floor. More peeing. food was tea, veg broth, more ProSource. Watched tv, played on iPad, made phone calls. Day 3 - Finally went home. Walking, drinking, peeing, Napped in my own bed propped up on pillows. Played with my cat. Day 4 - Same as day 3. Lots of flatulence. No pain, just tooting. Took a walk outside this time. Really short walk to the corner of my street and back.
  5. I started using MFP 3 or 4 years ago as a ways to track my eating not only for fitness, but also to help with my allergies. My goal prior to WLS was 50gms of protein. I actually hit between 40 -50 fairly consistently.

    Getting calories up

What's you NUT say? I was cleared for all foods as tolerated at 6 weeks. By that point you are just looking at whatever high protein foods you like.

    Cereal

Agree with everyone else. You may be able to eat it, but it's a waste of calories and carbs. It could also end up being a slider food. I'd stay away from it.

    Anyone's first surgery?

My sleeve surgery was my 6th surgical procedure. That doesn't include being intubated and placed in a medical coma. I also worked in hospitals for 10 years as a Child Life Specialist, 5 of which were spent in the ER. I actually gave pre-surgical tours to families and medical play with kids to explain what the procedures and processes would be like. Having that knowledge was helpful because I think for many the fear of the unknown is scarier than what actually happens. If you don't know better all those machines, sounds and smells can be really scary when they really aren't. So for all you first timers, try and relax. This is a relatively simple procedure. You will most likely be just fine.

Very Sedentary for Years... How do I start?

I was walking from day 1, back in the gym week 3. It's not too early to work out, in fact it helps. I also use an activity tracker. I prefer the polar loop, but really I say find one you like. They all remind you to move every hour, and track your steps. Many also monitor your sleep patterns.

Very Sedentary for Years... How do I start?

Were you in my class? LOL Yes we get a variety of young, old and plus size folks. However the instructors make the class loads of fun! I also take the silver sneakers low impact class. I am the youngest in class but also the heaviest. I don't care because my knees can tolerate it and I work up a good sweat. Most of theses people have watched me losing over the past year so I never feel out of place. They encourage me to keep up the work.
  11. One other thing anyone can workout with out hurting themselves. I started out over 400lbs. I walked regularly the first 2 weeks and returned to Water aerobics at 3 weeks post op. I take classes at my gym. The instructors are really good about correcting form and making sure we are doing things correctly.
  12. I didn't make a big deal about it, but I was pleasantly surprised at how little pain I had. No real pain just soreness.
  13. No, not always but it's not uncommon. You body siphons off all available protein to live so hair & nails can suffer as a result. Once you go into maintenance most people return back to normal.
  14. If you plan to go lighter, unless you're going to rock a pixie, I would wait. Bleaching makes hair even more fragile and if you are shedding it's already in a pretty fragile shape.

FEMALES - DECREASED URINE FLOW - ANYONE?

    I'm 52. I drink 60 - 70 ounces of fluids a day. I pee like a race horse.

Very Sedentary for Years... How do I start?

@@JupiterinVirgo - I was just talking to someone about this at the gym yesterday. You start slow but you do it consistently. Get you some light hand weights. 3 -5 lbs. Keep them by your computer desk. Every 30 mins do 10 arm raises. Every hour get up and walk around the house for 5 minutes swinging the weights in your hands. Set alarms on your smart phone to remind you to move. Another tip is to join a gym or sign up for a exercise class of some sort. Nothing big. When I started going to the gym, my goal was 2 days a week. I aimed for doing that faithfully. When that got easy I added a 3rd day. Even now 2 things I do every day is plan my activity and eating for the day when I get up. Keep that focus and you will be fine.
  17. One of things I often talk to others about when they tell me they are considering surgery is to ask/find out about after care. Since it seems that your surgeon has a limited schedule , I would take @@JamieLogical's advice and see if your PCP could handle it. You won't meet with the nutritionist, but at least you can make sure your vitals and blood work are where they should be.
  18. Biology? I suspect it's just the way some bodies are hardwired. If you are following your doctor's orders then stop worrying about making things faster and worry about making sure you are learning life long eating skills. Besides the slower you lose, the better your body has time to adjust and you decrease your chances of having too much lose skin.
  19. I have light 3lb hand weights at home. If it's an off day. I stand up, and walk back and forth from the living room to the kitchen while doing arm raises. On days when I am a few steps short of 10K steps I walk up and down the steps inside the house. Anytime I go to the big box stores my rule is I have to walk the entire paremeter (inside) so I get in extra steps.

1 week post op weight lose

There is no general wight loss. It varies from those who lose a few pounds, those who lose a lot and even those who experience a gain. Then you add in age, starting weight, whether you had a pre-op diet, whether you have a Clear liquids stage, whether you are male or female and any co-morbidities and it's easy to understand why there is no average loss. As long as you feel healthy there's no need to call the doctor.

How Often Do You Actually Cook?

I cook every day. Sometimes it's just something simple like scrambling an egg fr breakfast. Some days it's more elaborate like making beans from scratch. Grits, oatmeal, from scratch, not a mix. Once and a while I even pull out the food processor and make veg burgers from scratch. I'm not a fan of processed foods. It's enough that I supplement to keep my protein up. Also since I'm taking the time to chop veg, I count making a salad as cooking.
  22. So you got approved for surgery before meeting your surgeon? How does that work?

    Feeling blue

Sounds like it may be time to see a counselor or therapist to work through those issues. Don't suffer alone, find someone competent to help you work through theses issues.

    Dairy stops weight loss?

Cheese and yogurt have been a major part of my post-op eating. Not bothering me at all.
  25. Depending on the severity of her dairy allergy that won't help unless she uses a non soy vegan powder since most of the really popular shakes contain either whey or soy isolates.
