Do you eat your exercise calories?
BLERDgirl replied to Bndtoslv's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You can't go by that always. If you are extremely overweight walking in the mall really is a workout. My rule of thumb for logging is I don't count anything that is part of my normal routine so I don't count things like washing dishes, but years ago when my feet and legs were so swollen that standing was painful, I might have. -
Do you eat your exercise calories?
BLERDgirl replied to Bndtoslv's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The thing to keep in mind with MFP is that it's not set up for bariatric patients. I don't eat my calories back, but if I am consistently hungry at a certain level, I know it's time to go up another 100 calories. Before I do that I play around with what I am eating. For me eating more protein rich foods with carbs before and after my workout tend to help. I burn the calories with my workout and it doesn't leave me starving. -
What to do with clothes
BLERDgirl replied to Daveo's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I've done a little of everything. Taken some to Goodwill, given some to people in my congregation, sold a few pieces on the FB FatToo pages and I've just signed up to try out ThredUp. -
How can I get my family in my corner?
BLERDgirl replied to ♥dreamable's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
You can't change people. You can only control you. Trying to change folk's minds is an exercise in futility. Don't ask them for support they aren't prepared to give. It's family so you can't cut them out of your life. What you can do is make family occasions about something other than your WLS. If you need to talk WLS, save it for the relatives who have had it. -
I ate raw veg from day 1. I added spinach to my protein shakes. Actual salad and veg I started reintroducing around 6 weeks. I'm a vegetarian so my body may be more accustomed to raw veg.

Question about protein drinks
BLERDgirl replied to newmebithebypass's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My program just said 60gm protein a day, 64 ounce of fluids. The food stages were 2 weeks full liquids, 2 weeks, purees, 2 weeks soft foods, then regular food as tolerated. We could decide for ourselves if we wanted 3 meals, 3 meals, 2 snacks, or 3 meals and 1 snack. I was given jello, tea and non chunky soup in the hospital. I also didn't have a pre-op diet. -
Depends on your healing and your doctor's protocols. I was okay'd for light weights (10lbs) at 2 weeks and could resume regular aerobic core workouts at 3.

Did your doctor say you couldnt drive for 2 weeks after surgery ?
BLERDgirl replied to quevedo05's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Agreed, typically the no driving is due to it not being safe to drive while under pain meds. I was told 3 weeks, but at my 2 week follow up my doctor said since I wasn't on pain meds I could drive. -
Post Op and soooooo many questions!

Star Jones weight gain (80 lbs)
BLERDgirl replied to hopefullythininme's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I don't understand how fat shaming a celebrity is encouraging. I thought this board was for encouraging people in their WLS efforts. Now we have a post discussing some trashy tabloid photo of a woman who has her own public struggles with weight. -
How Do You Get Yourself Out the Door to Exercise?
BLERDgirl replied to Alex Brecher's topic in Fitness & Exercise
I removed all excuses. When I started aquafit, my deal was "2 days a week, you can do this!" My other promise to myself was to go no matter what. So if I was running late, go away. *Stuck in traffic, go anyway. I set 3 alarms on my iPhone. I bought 2 bathing suits, and 2 towels. I'd pack my bag the night before and sit it by the front door. If **class was canceled I made myself get in and walk the pool for an hour. To make it interesting I bought a waterproof iPod shuffle. For every barrier that could cause discouragement or give me an excuse not to go, I tried to think up a way around it. I told myself this was not option. I have arthritic knees. My doctor told me this could take knee surgery off the table. That was enough of an incentive for me. I now go to aquafit 5 - 6 days a week. *The traffic is weird. If I leave before 8:40 it take me 15 mins to get to the gym. Leave after and it can take as long as 45 mins. ** Has only happened a handful of times. -
Wayyyyyyyyy too many clothes!
BLERDgirl replied to FinallyFit50s's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You are my twin. I've lost over 100lbs and all I've bought is 2 dresses that were on sale for under $10 and a bathing suit for the beach this summer. Other than gym clothes & underwear I don't need to buy anything. My sibling calls my spare room "The Store". I've taken 10 bags to Goodwill, and given away 2 bags of clothing. I still have more to go! Selling is a pain in the rear, although I'm thinking of trying ThredUp for some of the really nice designer stuff I have. -
You know that saying, "You gotta kiss a lot of frogs to find your prince."? Well that's Protein supplements. There are a zillion different brands and forms. It's really a matter of trial and error to find what your tastebuds like. My advice is buy from brick and mortar stores and save your receipts. Most reputable places will allow you to return any unused portion. @@Yammi is correct, you want to find something that use whey protein isolates, not concentrates. Popular powders are: Syntrax nectar, Isopure, EAS. RTD: Premiere protein. There are also Protein drinks such a Proasis and Isopure no carb. You have to decide if you want to mix your own using a nutra bullet, or just open and go. The protein drinks are a nice change if you prefer a non milk based drink. Unflavored whey is good for adding to Soups. unjury also makes a protein Soup. These are good for when you get tired of the constant sweet taste from the other protein drinks and shakes.

Step away from the scale. If you are the person who gets upset at seeing the numbers go up and down on the scale, then put it away. You weight will go up and down. It may even stall at times. If you are following the program, getting in your Protein, drinking enough water/fluids and some sort of exercise 30 minutes a day, even if it's just walking, you will lose. Instead use some sort of online food diary or app. and take your measurements (neck, boobs, waist and hips). These will tell you how your body is changing. A food diary will also help you watch your sodium/carbs/sugars as well as your protein. For the first 6 months I didn't get weighed unless I was at the doctors and I showed a loss every time. Even now I weigh myself either once a month or when I am at the doctor's, whichever comes first. What is important is to get in the minimum 60gms of protein and 64ounces water/fluids. Most people actually aim for more than 60gms of protein since it may help prevent hair loss.

The Pitfalls of Snacking
BLERDgirl replied to Bariatricbro's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Cute blog. However I think when we change our way of eating we also need to change our way of thinking of food as well. I don't view Snacks as junk food. I also plan my snacks. When I was newly sleeved and could eat much, I need and afternoon snack. I was hungry. Even now when I plan my eating for the day I always plan for an afternoon snack. If I'm not hungry, I don't eat it, but I plan for it every day. The difference is, it's not junk food. My snacks are an ounce of nuts, 4 ounces of yogurt, ½ and orange, some string cheese , etc... It's no longer mindless crap that I shove in my mouth without thinking. If I am craving chocolate I will even get a mini Peanut Butter cup, or one square of Lindtz chocolate. The different is I plan for it, and it doesn't derail healthy eating habits. -
Sleeved Aug. 3rd- Did you feel like this?
BLERDgirl replied to Missing Me15's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Omeprazole and prilosec are basically the same thing. Be patient, it may take up to a week for the effects to kick in and you need to take it consistently to prevent the return of that uncomfortable feeling. The sensation is odd, not a burning, almost like something is stuck in your throat or chest. -
YAY!

My hospital provided most of what I needed so I packed super light. I brought a toothbrush, deodorant, my iPhone, iPad, chargers, and a pair of large panties. I got petroleum jelly from the nurse for my lips. My doctor started me on a stool softener and PPI (omeprazole) in the hospital. I just wore 2 gowns for walking. I live less than 30 minutes from the hospital and didn't really have a lot of pain so I didn't need a pillow. I wore a lose fitting t shirt dress to the hospital and wore the same thing to come home. I used those socks with grips on the bottom that the hospital provided for walking.

Sleeved Aug. 3rd- Did you feel like this?
BLERDgirl replied to Missing Me15's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Agreed. It sounds like acid. My doctor prescribed omeprazole which is the generic form of prilosec. 40mgs once a day did it for me as well. After month 6 I no longer needed it at all. -
Can I take anything like night quil? I'm not sure. I don't see why not, I have to take Zyrtec daily and I was able to resume them day 2 post op. I would check with the doctor to be sure, but you should be able to.

How do you bounce back after having a bad day?
BLERDgirl replied to Sajijoma's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Take a deep breath. 50% of this is a mental game. You have to change the way you think. Alex just post about PLANNING AHEAD. When you think about yesterday, for every negative, think about what you could have done instead. I eat Chinese quite often. I get steam veg, sauce on the side. I only get rice if they have brown rice and even then I limit it to 1 tablespoon or quarter cup. I fill up on any unbreaded, non fried Protein and veg. Retrain yourself not to eat the kid's leftover. I know many mom's do that on autopilot. Either give it to the hubby or ask for to go containers when the food arrives and pick it up as the kids finish. Keep "safe: foods in your purse. When I was newly sleeved I would buy the RTD Protein drinks in case I got stuck out somewhere there was no safe food for me I find not allowing myself to get "hangry" prevents me from making bad eating choice. I also try to go everywhere with a Water bottle or bottle of water. Retraining and changing bad habits takes some time. For many of us it may be a lifelong battle. The key is to not give up. -
You really should speak with your nutritionist about this. Here's what was allowed on my program. 1.Yes a tablespoon of nut butter was allowed per day. Even in the full liquids stage. I used them to take my Vitamins and supplements. 2. Sugar free pudding should be allowed by the time you get to purees or soft foods. 3. I don't drink a lot of fruit juice unless it's diluted 1:3. It's really high in sugar. I have on occasion mixed unflavored protein with my water/juice for flavor. 4. Not sure but I don't think slim fast has enough protein in it for post op life. I would ask your nutritionist for guidelines on what protein powders she recommends. My wanted a specific amount of protein/carbs/sugars per serving. You might want to start tracking using one of the online programs or apps like Myfitnesspal. This will give you a better idea of how much you are eating and the nutritional content. Post op you don't want to just guess. Tracking at least for a few months gives you a truer picture.

How do you feel about 'fat shaming'
BLERDgirl replied to Tootsietoes's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Why would anyone person agree with a single word out of that person's mouth? She is in no position to say why a person is fat. She's not a former fattie, she's not a health professional. Why internalize her issues into self hate? -
She may say no. Honey is very high in sugar. I use it on occasion, but I can't have artificial sweeteners. Perhaps try a peppermint or herbal tea instead.
