What to do/use to prevent sagging skin while losing weight?
BLERDgirl replied to inkie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm nearly 52 but I got that good melanin working in my favor. -
Where on earth do people get the idea that they should lose 50 lbs overnight? You guys are literally losing nearly a lb a day! Those are excellent weights. It took most of us years to gain this weight and you want it gone seemingly overnight? Relax, step away from the scale and follow your program. You are doing fine.

Feeling defeated :(
BLERDgirl replied to LoseItKacy's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
She does not matter. I would ignore/block her, but I have a pretty low BS threshhold and have no issues cutting people out of my life or compartmentalizing to 2nd or 3rd tier friends. If you feel you must reply, simply say, "thank you for your concern, but you are not my doctor and do not know my life." -
I've been buying new suit like every 2 -3 months. (I do Water aerobics for fitness). I gone through 4 suits since being sleeved and am noticing the latest one is getting saggy.

And check if your multi contains Iron. If so do not take your calcium with your multi for the same reason. My NUT recommended separating them by at least 2 hours.

It's best to get that info from your program. Some of what you will take depends on your bloodwork and some of it is based on the recommendations of your program. Mine does not allow gummie Vitamins because they don't feel they are complete. Other programs do. I only had to have chewable vitamins up until week 6, others have different timelines. What I started out taking: Multi Vitamin 2 x's a day calcium citrate 12,000mg a day split into AM/PM doses B12 sublingual 1 dropper full every other day. D3 (I forget the dosage) 1 time a day My program prescribed: colace 10mg 1 x a day for first 30 days omeprazole 20 mg first 60 days, I needed to increase to 40 mg from months 3 - 6 I also take: Biotin 10,000mg to help with hair loss. One year out I currently only take 1 multi, biotin, D3 & calcium daily, but that may change pending the results of my bloodwork.

African American vsgers!
BLERDgirl replied to theshrinkingdutchess's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Had my one year follow up today. I truly love my bariatric program. The staff is so positive and encouraging! I started at a really high weigh so I knew this would be a longer journey for me. I was 4.8 lbs shy of my (self imposed) 1 year goal. I had a feeling I wouldn't make it, and was thinking I would be disappointed but I'm not. I think it's in large part due to the reaction of my NP, nurse and nutritionist. They all gave good feedback about how well I was doing from where I started. I discussed with the NUT & NP on what I needed to keep going for this next year. They liked that I exercise regularly, keep my Protein at 100grams or more each day and keep a food log. The NUT said some people slip up because they think they have things under control, stop logging and fall back into bad habits. So I'll drop these 5 lbs, hit my 1 year goal a little late and then make my next goal. -
You should speak with your nutritionist. Everyone has a different protocol. I was okayed for soft fruits when I moved to purees which was week 3 for me. If they were canned they had to be packed in Water only.

Water bottles
BLERDgirl replied to destinedtofindher's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I started out sipping and returned to normal as my body could handle it. I have a variety of Water bottles. I have a bite valve one from camelback, one by polarbottle, Thermos Intak Hydration Bottle with Meter, a britta waterbottle and a few no name bottle. I also have a Rubbermaid shaker bottle for my Protein drinks and my nutra bullet has a to go lid as well. The thing you have to remember is sipping too fast or gulping will be uncomfortable at first. Just like eating too quickly. You will eventually be able to take normal bites and sips, but early on you need to keep that in mind. -
African American here. Only my largest scar is dark, but looking at my hysterectomy scars from 10 years ago, they will fade with time. I used Scarfade gel initially because I also tend to keloid. That helped fade them a little bit and also flattened them out. I now use virgin coconut oil on them. I had 5 or 6 incisions and only 2 are noticeable now and the big one is the most noticeable.

What to do/use to prevent sagging skin while losing weight?
BLERDgirl replied to inkie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yep I moisterize and exercise well. 1 year out and my thighs are a little jiggly, but not crazy saggy. My arm have no sag or jiggle at all. I do acquafit which includes light weight lifting and lots of core work. I also use the kettleball at home. I use coconut oil and baby oil gel to moisturize but that's mire to manage dry skin. I drink 6 - 8 glasses of water a day and get a minimum of 100 grams of protein daily. -
Silly question - appendix surgery anything like sleeve?
BLERDgirl replied to Leesa926's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Never had my appendix removed, but I have had multiple surgeries. Yes you go to sleep and wake when it done, but that's the only comparison I'd make. -
Excellent idea. This way you focus on eating well & exercise, not numbers on a scale. The first 6 mths you have enough f/u appts that you will be able to track your progress and you have access to a scale at your job. However this way you don't obsess over weighing too frequently. For my first 6 mths I only got weighed at the doctors or once a month, whichever came first.

I would change from slim fast. It's too many carbs & not enough to protein. I would opt for a power protein drink for either lunch or dinner. Simply add a quarter cup of yogurt to your protein drink. It will give you more fluids as well as increase your protein. Use the other time for drinking water. Make sure you eat good meals at home. I kept my meals interesting by preparing them in mini ramekins that I could heat & eat. Switch up with sauces and spices. Keep water bottles with you everywhere. Sip in the car or where ever else you can. It's important to hit those protein & fluid goals.

You'll get there and all the frustration and hard work will pay off. Tend to that tooth and move forward.

MFP. Everyday I get up and log my day. I record what I'm having for Breakfast and project what I plan to eat for the rest of the day. This helps me see where I can add in Protein and helps me meet my protein goal. In the evening I adjust before closing out. I don't always eat what I put down in the morning, but starting the day this way gives me an idea of what I'm working with so if I get invited out to eat, or decide I want something else instead I know where I can make adjustments.

General question -- Do they remove any/some of the fat in your abdomen during surgery?
BLERDgirl replied to Mom26's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Because they aren't doing a liposuction. That's a different procedure. -
None, I had no pre-op diet.

10 Bariatric Mistakes - Do any apply to you?
BLERDgirl replied to ThreeFifty's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I completely agree with @jess9395. There is more than one way to "skin a cat". Your food plan should be catered to you individual makeup and lifestyle. I know some people who can eat soft boiled eggs on day 3. Why not? It's Protein and healthy fat. I am a vegetarian with severe food allergies. My eating plan is very different than most of the folks on these forums. Because my diet is plant based my carb intake is higher than most. Guess what? I have been able to lose steadily with no problems. In short cookie cutter treatments don't work because we are individuals, not clones. You should be having ongoing conversations with the medical team you chose to care for your unique needs. -
My nutritionist said that early on there is a concern that the body will not be able to properly absorb the nutrients from the larger vitamins. I had to crush my multi and calcium, but my small pills like the D and my omeprazole I was allowed to swallow. After my 6 week follow up I was allowed to swallow all my vitamins.

It's the rapid weight loss. You body uses all available protein resources to continue to function. Things like hair and nails get robbed as a result. This is one of the reasons why it's important to meet those protein goals. In most cases it stops as you get closer to maintenance.

Make sure you are doing this for you. Be realistic n your expectations. I know skinny friends who get chubb rub. That' just the way some people are built. Know that you have to be committed to changing your way of eating & drinking. You entire relationship with food changes. I have a very active social life. I eat out frequently and a lot of my family gatherings revolve around food. I know that to be successful I cannot mindlessly eat. I enjoy social engagements, but I mind my portions. I do NOT diet. Exercise is also very important for continued success. I work out regularly and enjoy it. I have had nothing but support from everyone I have shared my surgery with. I haven't rushed and and volunteered the info, but if it came up in conversation I had no problem letting someone know I had surgery. It was important to me not to stigmatize WLS. We remove our tonsils when they get infected and cause us problems, this was same thing to me. I needed this surgery to work along with my weight loss efforts. Keep in mind this is not a magic wand, but a tool that you can use to help you in your weight loss effort. Hard work is still required.

Your weight loss is on target. No you do not need to eat whey based protein powders. The numbers for the one you like sound okay. The extreme fatigue may in part be due to not meeting your protein requirements. I used FAGE 0% greek yogurt to my protein shakes for an added protein boost. A half a cup will give you 65cal 5carbs 13gms protein and 5sugar. I would add it to my morning protein shake since I worked out first thing. It was a terrific protein boost and fueled my day. You do need to watch your carbs and sugar throughout the rest of the day, but this helped get me started and kept me going without fatigue. It also made it easier to meet my protein goals by the end of the day so I had more time to focus on getting in my water.

Activity Trackers and fitness apps- What do you use?
BLERDgirl replied to Dream4tc's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
MFP synchs with most of the fitness trackers out there. Pick the one you like the best. I looked at several. I tried Polar Loop, JawboneUp24, Garmin Vivosmart and Misfiit. I went witht he Polar Loop because all the info is there on the watch and it's Water proof. I do aquafit for most of my fitness so this was important. It syncs with MFP. The only one I disliked was Garmin Viviosmart. It always felt off somehow. For a while I would wear both the JawboneUp24 and the Vovosmart and it was always way behind. JawboneU would say I had 8k steps and vivosmart would say 6k. Other than that pick what you like whether it's a watch or a clip on. As I transition to more land based activities, I'm going to get the Polar HRM and pair with it as well. -
The acid feeling quite often feels similar to hunger. A good PPI taken consistently should help. I took one daily from months 3 -6. Also eating several small meals a day should help. I did 3 meals and 2 Snacks for the first 3 mths because I was hungry every 3 -4 hours. It's not the same as grazing because this is planned. In between, I sipped my Water.
