@@her1981 - You say you need more intensity. Can you do something for exercise other than walking? I know I have to work out regularly to keep my metabolism burning.

The struggle is real...
BLERDgirl replied to Serenity924's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just hang in there and remember this is only temporary. I made it a point to only do 2 shakes a day and then have broth/clear Soup with unflavored Protein powder for dinner. I needed to have that break from all the sweet. -
When you are too big to manage your period...
BLERDgirl replied to Katsitsyahawe's topic in The Gals' Room
I had early onset menopause at 41 because I had uterine cancer & had to have a radical hysterectomy. While I don't miss my periods which were *really* out of whack, I HATED the hormonal changes that came with sudden onset menopause. -

I'm in Seattle...I need my coffee...
BLERDgirl replied to Seahawkgirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The concern is because coffee can sometimes cause additional stomach acid. This is a very big deal since painful acid is not only painful, it can lead to ulcers. Coffee & caffeine is one of those things that different programs will give you varying replies on. Some allow, some don't some allow after 6 weeks, etc... Follow YOUR doctor's orders. It may be hard, but your health is worth the restraint. I was allowed decaf only until 6 weeks. I hate decaf, but I went with it. I now enjoy an occasional cup with no problems. -

Get the super pads. The ones that say they are for overnight and wear 2 at a time. Make on overlap the other. Or wrap one around your underwear and put another the regular way. Have you tried insert the tampon by standing up, putting one leg on the toliet and inserting that way? I actually had really horrible periods years ago. I went from wearing a tampon and a overnight pad to using the Instead cup and a pad. -
Not a single one. Mind you, I am a year out and have always had a tummy seemingly made of steel. Never got sick other than a really bad tummy ache once. Technically speaking I can eat pretty much anything I want. However, I choose to eat sensibly and exercise.

Blue Shield bankrupted me... need to know if anyone else had this happen

This seems like your best best. Something is fishy about this. What did your approval letter state? -
That's pretty much what I was told. However the expectation was that "whatever I want" would be healthy nutritious food choices. My program has never emphasized low carb and I personally have never subscribed to low carb. However I do look at the source of the carbs and again, lean more towards, healthy carbs from plant based sources and not refined and overly processed carbs. As for the 6 week period, I think that may be the expected healing time if there are no complications early on.

Do a search on 3 week stall. 20lbs in one month is good. You can try eating slower. I mean snails pace slower, sometimes that helps the tummy readjust to eating food again. You can also try taking a step back and doing one shake and/or Soup a day instead. Are you on a PP? Sometimes the acid generated to breakdown food makes the tummy uncomfortable.Have you called your nutritionist or doctor to discuss this? Also keep in mind lower BMI's often lose at a slower pace. Step away from the scale if it making you crazy. Seriously pack it away for a few months and just focus on following the program.

10 Months Post-Op-- How Many Calories Are You Eating?
BLERDgirl replied to Momcat's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I do and I don't. I typically get in between 40 -60 carbs, but I pay more attention to the source rather than the count. I don't mind if they are from plant based sources. I just try to avoid highly processed "white" carbs like breads and refined sugars. I ignore that warning. I typically burn 700 - 800 calories from exercise and eat between 900 1050 calories a day. On heavy workout days I do allow my carb count to be a little higher, but I don't really worry about MFP's warning because it wasn't configured with bariatric patients in mind. I just make sure to hit my protein goal of 100gms or more, make sure I am well hydrated and listen to my body. If I feel especially hungry or fatigued I may eat a hard boiled egg. -
Over the Counter Acid Reflux Pills
BLERDgirl replied to Slimsoon1988's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Try upping the dosage. I was on 20 mgs and had to increase to 40 mgs. I also adjusted the time I took it to approximately 2 -3 hours before the time I noticed I would have a bout of acid. -
Struggling with boredom eating
BLERDgirl replied to jembell01's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You have to find something else do to. A small task or even something simple like putting a rubber band on your wrist and snapping it when you get the urge to snack. Keep a water bottle nearby and sip. -
I was adding raw spinach to my protein drink from week 1 Granted pureed in the nutra bullet takes a lot of the hard work off my tummy. I was making smallish salads on weeks 3 - 4 with no issues, mostly romaine or spinach leaves. My NUT had no issues with it and it didn't upset my tummy in the least. Mind you I'm vegetarian so my body may be more accustomed to raw veg than most. I never eat iceburg lettuce, it is a nutritional waste of space. I go for vitamin rich dark green leafy veg.

I drink the nocarb drinks in tea and coconut flavors only. I think the teas taste like bottle tea, but the coconut only has a subtle hint of coconut as opposed to real coconut water. The powder has a slight after taste, neither sweet or savory, hard to describe. I find that adding seasonings and spices disguises it, and adding it to things like coffee or tea makes it nearly unnoticeable. Some people have reported being put off by the smell of the drinks, but it doesn't bother me.

African American vsgers!
BLERDgirl replied to theshrinkingdutchess's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I somehow missed this comment. Thank you! I used scarfade gel. It's pricey but my scars tend to get red and keloid. This flattens them and make them nearly invisible. I used this on my face after I had a very severe case of shingles on the advice of my doctors. Worth every penny. -
For some people there is a bit of difficulty swallowing multi's. However for the doctor it's a question of whether or not your new tummy can breakdown the Vitamin fast enough for your body to absorb the nutrients. I was allowed to swallow pills at 6 weeks. Check with your program to see what they say. Since you are experiencing nausea they may okay you to swallow them instead.

Cravings and insatiable!
BLERDgirl replied to bellabloom's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
It depends on what you are eating. Often when our body is craving carbs it manifest as craving sweets. Sometimes something with a bit of healthy fat like an ounce of nuts, a tbsp of nut butter, cheese cubes and maybe a tiny bit of dried fruit like raisins, cranberries or apricots or a bit of string cheese may hit the spot. I find I can eat a very small amount of fried fruit like 10 raisins and take care of that sweet craving. I'm not a nutritionist so I have no idea why that works. You may have to play around and see what works for you. -
I get hungry when I truly need to eat. Just not ravenously hungry. I also know when I am consistently hungry it is time to up my calories. I am also post menopausal and work out 5 - 6 days a week.

Scared/ranting what if this doesnt work or help my current heath issues?
BLERDgirl replied to Munecagirl85's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That's because the people who are experiencing difficulties post the most. I started at over 400lb, was pre-diabetic. I have several chronic health conditions and severe allergies. I was literally spending most of my time trying to manage my allergies. Despite being on medication I would still have pretty nasty outbreaks. These could be anything from hives to anaphylaxis. Once even being put into a medical coma due to a bad allergic reaction. I had surgery a little over a year ago. I had the absolute easiest hospital course. I walked in recovery, tolerated all foods/drinks, didn't need pain meds, had no nausea, vomiting, etc.... I was in the hospital for 2 days per my doctor's protocol. He discharges all his patients on colace (stool softener) and omprazole (PPI for acid). Once home I tolerated all foods. I walked every day the first week home. Started using light hand weights (3 & 5 lbs) the second week home, returned to aquafit classes by week 3. I have been losing steadily. At my 2 week f/u I had lost 26 lbs. At my 6 weeks f/u I had lost another 6. After that I lost 6 -12 lbs a month pretty steadily. I work out 5 -6 days a week and feel great. I haven't been sick or in the ER in over a year. I still have my chronic conditions and allergies, but they weren't weight related and as I have loss weight and gotten stronger they are more manageable. I still have arthritis, but the exercise and weight loss keeps that in check. This isn't a magic fix, but it has helped me get things on track. I work with my sleeve by eating right and exercising. -
They'll likely give you IV fluids. Make sure you ask for prescriptions for anti-nausea and a good PPI.
-
Be careful with those Fiber powders. Some poster have reported feeling bloated from them. If you want something natural to add, I would look into psyllium or flax powder.
-
Call your doctor and get a prescription strength PPI and make sure you take it regularly. You may even need to play around with the dosage and times of day you take. I was sent home on 20 mgs of omeprazole. I took it every morning but didn't really have any issue with acid until about 2 ½ mths out. Then I noticed I would get that stick feeling in my chest. I even skipped dinner once or twice. Then I realized it was the acid and I started taking my PPI aroun 2 - 3 in the afternoon. It helped a bit but I soon realized I need to increase my dosage. Once I upped it to 40mgs I was fine. By 6 mths post-op I didn't need it anymore. I also went through a few months where I had no appetite. I just ate because I was supposed to. That also passed.

Depending on your body apples, cherries, peaches & apricots. Other foods that work for me: veg wise, cooked spinach and any dark green raw veg like arugula, romaine, kale, or spinach. Black beans also keep me regular. Really it's just getting good doses of fiber and roughage along with plenty of water.
