Throwing up for no reason
BLERDgirl replied to Daveo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It could be acid. Are you on a PPI? I would call the doctor and get it checked out. -
Add another stronger smell to it. Nut butter might make the scent.

Going to a wedding today...halp?
BLERDgirl replied to Mega_100's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Eat the salad and soup if available. Decline everything else. -
I had the black bean for dinner last night with a little marinara sauce and a bit of chopped broccoli. Very tasty. I guess I'll try the garbanzo flavor next.

Hair Loss and Vitamins
BLERDgirl replied to Colleen Rothberg's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You don't lose all your hair. Some people experience some thinning, others do not. I have a little thinning around the temples, but it's completely manageable. So yeah, some thinning isn normal, but I have yet to meet anyone who is completely bald from WLS surgery. -
It in set up under My Tickers. Top of the page, click the little gear next to your username.

Are you on a stool softener? I pooped on day 5 post op. Don't wait until you are backed up and uncomfortable. Start on a gentle stool softener and then work to gradually add some fiber to your diet now. You want your body functioning normally ASAP.

LOW metabolism - sleeve or bypass
BLERDgirl replied to bhopeful's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I can't confirm my metabolic rate, but I know I am on medication that slows my metabolism and I have a benign tumor that also impacts my metabolism and has side effect such as gigantism and obesity. The sleeve is working for me, but I lose best when I exercise regularly. I started at a really high weight, over 400 lbs and I have managed to lose over 100lbs in a year. Because of my food and medication allergies I wasn't interested in the rewiring or malabsorption that comes with the bypass. ETA: I am also post menopausal. I went into instant menopause due to radical hysterectomy in my early 40's. -
I did. I woke up feeling like I had done 100 situps and my abs were sore, but that's it. I didn't need any pain meds at all. Walked in recovery and had no gas or nausea.

That was the lone hiccup in my surgery. They couldn't start an IV on me and had to do a central line. Even that was a challenge! I was calm through the whole thing because I was a Child Life Specialist and very familiar with hospitals and OR's. Not sure I could have remained calm if the nurse had passed out on me.

Depends on your system. Check with your nutritionist to be sure. Try a ricttota bake. Basically the filling for stuffed shells topped with cheese and tomato sauce baked in a ramekin. Good Protein and filling. If your NUT allows it, chopped sauteed spinach is one of the easier veggies to take in at first. Spinach is also a good source of Vitamins & Fiber with a bit of protein to boot. Also you can swap out plain greek yogurt for sour creme. I prefer FAGE 0% greek yogurt. It's less fat than regular sour cream and a nice bit of protein.

Congrats! Get up and walking ASAP. If you can raise your hands above your head, do a few of those as if you were lifting dumb bells, it will help move the gas out. Ask for a prescription for colace and omeprazole before being discharged. Sip, sip, sip and keep on sipping.

I only had one 2 or 3 hour nutrition class to take. They discussed portion sizes, the importance of drinking water/fluids, to get isolates, not concentrates and recommendations on things like getting smaller utensils and plates. However I met with the nutritionist at every pre-op appointment (3 in total) and I continue to meet with her at every post-op appointment. She always reviews my food log and offers feedback. Pre-op the recommendations I was given were regarding finding a Protein drink that met my dietary challenges (Vegetarian and severe food allergies), to keep my calories under 1200 and increase my protein intake. Post-op the discussion surrounded how many calories I should be eating at various stages as spelled out in my program guidebook. Carbs were never discussed and the only mention of sugars was to keep them low.

I've been experimenting with baked things and unflavored Protein Powder. On The Chew they made this recipe with a waffle that had falafel type seasonings using mashed chickpeas and a little flour. I plan to do half gluten free and half protein powder. I've always been an experimenter in the kitchen so I'm enjoying making new concoctions.

I made mine really soft, almost custard consistency. I added a tsp of greek yogurt and a tiny bit of shredded cheese then cooked over a low heat stirring frequently. The softness of the eggs made them perfect for the soft foods stage. I then added chopped spinach and other veg as I got further along. Never had an issue with them. 3 mths out I went to iHop and was able to order a vegetable omelet no problem. I still could only eat 4 bites, but it didn't bother me.

This is when unflavored protein really comes in handy. Because it doesn't have any added sweeteners you can add it to a broth or a nonchunky soup and give your palate a bit of a break from all the sweetness. The only thing that got me through the all liquids phase was having broth or soup for dinner. I needed a savory break from all that sweet.
-
If you like Unjury, I would stick with it. I use Isopure, but with all the unflavored protein powders it's likely to be the same, it's a very subtle or slight taste but should interfere with whatever you have mixed it with.

Eating too much, still hungry, stalled
BLERDgirl replied to maloney731's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The goal of this surgery is not to feel full to the max. It's to relearn how to eat until you are sated, not overstuffed and full. I would look at the dosage & time of day you are taking the prilosec. It may need to be adjusted. When I was first sleeved I was taking my omeprazole (generic prilosec) in the morning since I didn't have any issues with acid. Once I transitioned to soft foods I noticed I would feel full in the early evenings. Occasionally I would get this stuck feeling in my chest. Reading up I realized I needed to take my PPI around 2 -3 ish and eventually I upped the dosage from 20 mgs to 40. That made all the difference in the world. I could eat what I was supposed to and I no longer had that weird full feeling. As for eating and drinking you need to do whatever it is to get in ALL your Protein. Early on I find that a combo of eating and drinking Proteins helps. I started each day with a Protein shake that I would make with FAGE 0% greek yogurt, Protein powder and Water served over ice. This was helpful to get a big does of protein and fluids at the beginning of the day. My shakes came in at 12 - 14 ounce and 31 -38 gms of protein. The rest of the day I could coast. Eat what foods I could tolerate and sip on water. Eventually I was able to work my way up to getting my 64 ounces of fluids and 100gms or more of protein. -
Embrace the stall? What does that mean?
BLERDgirl replied to Kgl24's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
To me it just me accept that stalls are as much a part of the process as the weight loss is and not to get frazzled by them. Accept it as part of the ebb and flow of what happens to everyone. Accept it, stay the course and keep on with your endeavors. You were very wise not to skip that shake. ETA: I weigh myself once a month or whenever I go to the doctor, whichever comes first. The scale makes me crazy and I lose focus weighing too frequently. Doing this I have missed any stalls that may have happened since every time I go to the doctor's I have shown a loss. That's much better on the ego. -
Speak with your doctor. It honestly depends on how you are healing. I resumed workouts at full strength on week 3. As long as your incisions are healed, and most are 6 weeks out, then you should be fine. Just keep in mind if you feel any pulling or tugging you should stop.

Poll for those at least 6 months PostOp
BLERDgirl replied to Barry W's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Not quite 13 mths ago Started at a whopping 73 BMI In a years time I have lost over 100lbs (109.2 to be exact) Current BMI is 54 I feel great! I was fortunate to have a completely pain free and uncomplicated surgical process and recovery. I was up and walking in recovery. Had no issues with nausea, gas or vomiting. I haven't had any issues with food. Didn't need pain meds once I woke up in recovery. Thankfully my doctor prescribes colace and a PPI from day 1 so no issues with constipation. I would do this again in a heartbeat. I love my program and feel supported and charged to forge ahead this next year and get down to a normal BMI -
You don't start off getting in all 60 gms/64 ounces. You slowly work up to. The goal is to keep at it until you get there. A year out I still use the isoprene teas. I split one bottle up into 3 or 4 parts and add it to my water. My water bottles are 24 ounces and my goal is to refill it it at least 3 times. Just keep sipping. As you heal you will be able to take in more and more.

I wasn't eating 1000 calories until I was nearly a year out and I work out regularly.

I swear clean eating is not hard. It's a change but some of us simply cannot eat lots of processed foods. If you've tried everything else, why not try this? Ways I make it easy are by do weekly food prep. It takes a minute to find a rhythm, but once you get in the habit it should take no more than an hour a week to food prep. I know for me personally I saw an almost immediate difference when I cut processed foods out of my life.

Sad story today in local paper about 800lb man
BLERDgirl replied to Margie122's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
It's sad but you know what? If you go to rehab and get caught using, they put you out. This may be the tough love he needs. Hopefully he finds another program to take him in and he can manage his addictions. I feel for him but I can't vilify the hospital either.
