    Few Questions

My doctor does the same thing. He starts all his pts on colace for 30 days and omeprazole for 90 days in the hospital. He prefers to prevent any discomfort. As a result I never had any real issues with constipation or acid. Around month 3 I did have to increase my omeprazole to 40 mgs but by month 6 I no longer needed it at all. I also was using medcine cups to sip when I was in the hospital and used them for the first week post op. It helped me remember to take teeny sips.

    Gained a pound back! :(

No you should not be worried and do not cut more calories. Weight loss is not a straight, linear progression. It's full of stops, starts and backtracks. 1 lb is not a reason to change what you are doing. Speak with your counselor about any impending spiral and continue to follow your program.

    Surgery safety

Normal weight range for her age and height is 120 - 160. I realize this is a family member and you are concerned, but unless you were in the room or see the actual application you cannot verify what was told to the insurance company. Questionable ethics aside, yes it's safe. She may be smaller than most people who have the surgery but that may play into her favor in terms of recuperation. I agree with @JamieLogical , at this stage the best thing you can do is be loving and supportive.

    Does WLS effect our metabolism?

    1. Men lose faster than women. In fact you can't compare yourself to anybody because there are far too many variables that go into how fast/slow someone does or doesn't lose weight. Sex, age, health issues, just to name a few. 2. Eat some complex carbs. The Fiber will help with your potty issues and I assure you, it won't slow down your weight loss. A tsp of wheat germ, flax powder or psylium powder in your yogurt, some dark green leafy veg, even Beans will help with the potty issue.
  5. This isn't a diet per se, it's a lifestyle change. We have to change our relationship with food, how & what we eat. It's not a matter of tiny bits of anything, it *has* to be tiny bits of good, nutritious food. With care this new eating style can become second natural, but it does need to change from how we used to eat. A large part of it is mental. You have to stop thinking of it as a diet. A diet is temporary. How WLS pts need to eat is our new lifestyle. Low carbs isn't for everyone and not eating carbs isn't a guarantee you will lose. There are simple carbs and complex carbs. Complex carbs are good for you and you should eat them. Exercising the same amount of calories as you eat does not negate eating bad foods. Eating super low cal doesn't either. The goal is to eat small, balanced meals. That means a bit of Protein, carbs , sugars, sodium as well Fiber and micro-nutrients.

    No longer morbidly obese!

Congrats! I can't wait to get to that stage as well!

    Surgery safety

You don't mention her height, weight, age, co-morbs or anything else. Without those factors it's possible to determine. Theoretically speaking, anything is possible. Regardless, this is a grown woman and she's allowed to do whatever she feels is necessary with her own body.

    Regret surgery

I would definitely address the depression issues well before having surgery. The hormone release many experience post-op may worsen the depression and make recovery more difficult.

    Sleeve or Bypass?

@ - Thank you! I'm just happy not to have any sagging skin on my face. I hope my body follows suit. @@mayasmomma - I am not anti-bypass. In fact the friend who recommended my surgeon had the bypass and has been very successful on it. She is 2 years post op and maintaining well. What I am saying is there really is a choice sleeve or bypass. Do your homework about pros, cons etc.... and take into consideration your own body makeup and needs before you make a decision.

    Sleeve or Bypass?

Each surgery has it's pros and cons beyond just weight loss. I know the weight is the big thing, but please take into consideration other side effects and lifestyle changes. I was sleeved at 412 day of surgery. My highest weight was 414. A year later I have lost 110lbs and am still losing. With the sleeve it will take longer to get to a normal BMI starting at a higher weight but is can be done. With bypass it may take less time. I chose the sleeve because I was concerned the rewiring of my internal organs might not work for my body chemistry. I also knew that I could work hard with eating and exercise to make this work for me.I went into this knowing I was at a minimum looking at a 2 year commitment to get to maintenance. If it matters I am 52. I was 50 when I had surgery and turned 51 a month later. I was always an "active fat" so exercise wasn't hard for me even with arthritic knees. Here's me July 2014 and July 2015.

    I feel defeated

    1. Don't compare. Not everyone is a big loser. Slow and steady is a good thing. There are plenty of vets on this forum who were slow and steady losers and have made goal and are maintaining. 2. 38 lbs in 2 mths is great! CONGRATULATIONS!! When is the last time you lost that much weight in 2mths? 3. Stay off the scale. If it makes you crazy daily weighing is not for you. Step away from the scale, focus on eating well and getting in your Water & fluids. Instead take your measurements. (neck, boobs, waist and hips). Once a month retake them and see the difference even when the scale does not budge.

    Carbs Before Workout

That would be me. I think part of it is on the person to speak up for themselves. Wen I first joined the gym my membership came with a few free personal training session. I joined for the aquafit class but I thought, why not. They tried that jumping on the box and I told them I have arthritis and a balance disorder, jumping ain't happening. After that they would ask me if I thought I could do something. I think a lot of overweight people think fitness is supposed to hurt and thus don't speak up. As for eating carbs beforehand. I get the shakes if I don't eat before working out. Now That I eat better I wake up pretty hungry so I make sure to get that in.

    So worried

Can you just call your insurance company and check the status?

    Struggling

I would explain to your surgeon that you only have 1 week to work with. Tell the doctor you simply can'f afford to lose a week's pay. There really doesn't appear to be any other option.
  15. I didn't have a pre-op diet at all. I was warned by my doctor to eat high protein and keep my calories low because if my liver was too fatty he would close up right there on the table. However I didn't have a specific pre-op diet other than the usual all clears/NPO after 9pm. Call your doctor and explain the difficulties you are having. Maybe he can come up with some else for you.

So wait, you can't even use the 2 days PTO you have?

    Advice from BTDT people please!

First of all, good for you making changes now! It will make post-op life easier. My suggestions: Start an exercise program now. Especially if it's something that strengthens the core, but really any movement will help. I think regular exercise is what helped me rebound fairly quickly with no assistance from pain meds. When choosing a program ask about post-op care. How often will you be followed up? Will you see the surgeon post op, the nutritionist or the nurse practitioner? What sort of emotional support does the program provide? What procedures are in place if there is a question or an emergency post-op. Is there an on-call system? An email system? How long is the response time?

    Help! No energy.

Something to up your electrolytes. Gatorade, coconut Water, mashed banana if you are allowed.

    Public Pools and Hot Tubs

Exactly why I side eye the folks who don't shower. My gym has individual shower stalls so there's really no reason. There is no way I am leaving that place without scrubbing all that chlorine and stuff off my body.

@@Pillar2butterfly - Depends on what state she lives in. In some places FMLA will only hold the job. It will not pay a salary.

    Extra skin in hands?

I agree with others, hydration inside (water) and out (moisturizing) should take care of that. I'm 52 and my hands don't look wrinkly at all.

    Head cold

It's yucky, but saline solution will clear your nasal passages. Vick's vapor rub will also help you sleep. I would wait until I hear back from the doctor before trying anything else.

    Struggling

Are you able to take short term disability? Would you be able to work from home? If not, you may need to post pone and take some time bank some PTO and extra money to cover bills. Would after the first of the year be a problem? If you get an income tax refund you could use that to pay bills.

    Public Pools and Hot Tubs

I resumed acquafit classes at my gym on week 3 post op. Ask your doctor what his/her recommendation is. Mine said as long as the incisions were scabbed over I was fine.
