Depends on the person and whether or not they bounce back quickly. Some folks can go back in a week, others need more time. Think about how you tend to recoop from illneses and judge accordingly.

Looking for cheaper protein bars
BLERDgirl replied to zackly's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
Wow. I was unaware they had made changes other than adding new flavors. How long ago was this ? Fairly recently. Here's the post talking about the changes and the side effects it causes in some. -
What is on your Trader Joe's Shopping List?
BLERDgirl replied to OutsideMatchInside's topic in Food and Nutrition
I'm more a Whole Foods than Trader Joe's gal, but TJ's has a really good soyrizo I like. I don't even recall the brand but I know only TJ's sells it. II like cold brewed coffee, but I make my own at home. -
2 days before surgery and emotional
BLERDgirl replied to redsohare's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think it depends on your experience with hospitals and such. For many other than a visit or 2 to the doctor they may not have had surgeries and procedures. For them it's a big deal and can be a little scary. It's perfectly normal. If it gets too overwhelming you can let them know when you check in and they can give you something to help calm you. -
Very unpleasant post op day 6 & 7.
BLERDgirl replied to Reckless Moxie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had a reaction from the tape they use to hold my PICC line in but I wasn't surprised. I am allergic to latex among other things. However be careful using hydrocortisone around your incision sites. It can actually hinder healing. My doctor said to only use warm Water or betadine if you have it. -
You should have asked the nutritionist that. Also a fruit smoothie with no sugar is a bit of an oxymoron. If you're having fruit, you're getting sugar. Where would the 40 grams of protein come from?

*That* is hysterical! Seriously though. Walk as much as possible, raise your arms as if you were using dumb bells. You have to move that gas out.

Veterans: Sluggish bowels?
BLERDgirl replied to LumpySpacePrincess's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm vegetarian so I'm sure that plays a part. Lots of plant based foods full of Fiber. I am regular as clockwork and have been pretty much since day 5 post op. I go anywhere from 1 - 3 times a day, most days twice. I always have to go when I wake up and sometimes again after dinner. I find that on really active days, depending on what I've eaten I may go mid-day as well. Like the other posters have mentioned add some natural fiber in there. Apple or prune juice are good options. Probiotics or yogurt are also good. If you eat yogurt or hot cereals a tsp of wheat germ, flax powder or psylium powder may help. -
About 6, 7 months in I started getting thinning around my temples. I am also post menopausal so I'm sure that played a part as well. It's a little weird that it appears to be mostly in the front. The back of my hair is still really thick.

I go to LaFitness and have been a member for the past 4 or 5 years. I was 412 DOS. They offer 3 day passes. They also work with many insurance companies. Check your plan's wellness component. Mine pays for my membership and it's an all access membership. I can go to any LaFitness in the country. If your insurance doesn't cover it do not sign up in the gym. I've heard tell they try to upsell you lt of extra fees and services you don't need including personal training that you are locked into for a year. Go home and sign up online. They almost always have cheaper prices. Personally I love LaFitness. I have never been made to feel ashamed or embarrassed and on the few occasions I use the machines, the staff is really good at showing me how to use them.

Really Struggling Post-Surgery-Need Help!
BLERDgirl replied to blueyedpryncess's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You can't chug because you just had major surgery on your tummy and it's still healing. Like mentioned sip all day long. When eating go snails pace slow. At this point fluids are more important. Keep sipping but keep in mind that it takes most people a week or 2, sometimes more to work up to a minimum of 64 ounces. -
Questions for Alcohol Drinkers ONLY!
BLERDgirl replied to Cape Crooner's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
1. How long did you go before having your first drink? - 6 mths 2. Have you had any MEDICAL complications with your surgery that were attributed to drinking alcohol? NO 3. Have you gained back significant weight from drinking alcohol? NO 4. Have you developed an alcohol addiction post VSG after having been able to control your drinking before? NO I am a social drinker, but it really depends on when the mood hits. My first drink post-op was at a wine tasting. I had a drink over the summer at a get away weekend with friends. Since the new tv season has started I have a glass of wine on Thursday nights. I mostly drink wine, but occasionally also have beer or vodka. -
How did you type that with only flippers and no fingers? That proves that dolphins are extremely intelligent! Arthur Dent typed it for me. Humans are good for some thing like that.

so long and thanks for the fish!

Pre-op I had arthritis in my left knee from a torn meniscus while skiing. I actually developed arthritis in my right knee after surgery. The good news is I've caught both instances early enough that the doctor says as long as I am staying active and keep losing knee replacements are off the table.

troubel getting protein and food in.
BLERDgirl replied to fharris's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Remember unless your doctor says differently it's fluids, not Water. A Protein shake is a Fluid. However Protein Powder mixed in pudding is not. As mentioned you make up a schedule. I started between: 8 and 9am - Sip a Protein Shake for an hour 9/10 am - wait 30 minutes. 10:30/11 Sip 2nd Protein shakes. My shakes were ~ 30 - 38 grams of protein. So by 1 pm I had hit over 60 gms protein. First few weeks this is the time I would go for a walk. Other wise I just started sipping on water. The first 2 weeks if I got through the entire 24 ounces of my water bottle I was happy. Combined with the fluids from my protein shakes I was hitting 64 ounces of fluids. dinner was typically Soup during all liquids phase. Any of the foods I mentioned above after that. Around 8 pm, I would sip a little more water, but that was pretty much it. My goal was to get that protein in early so I could focus on drinking water. -
Use an online recipe calculator.

You may have eaten too fast. It doesn't hurt to call your doctor to make sure though.

Support after Sleeve?
BLERDgirl replied to bbrookmedic's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I made sure I had enough Protein shakes on hand for the first 2 weeks out from surgery. I did housecleaning and a few extra loads of laundry. I changed the linens on all the beds and I even bought a blanket to sit on the sofa and watch tv. I moved the cat's things so I was able to clean her litter and feed her without bending or lifting. Check your insurance plan. Once the discharge nurse found out that I lived alone she requested a visiting nurse for me. I went home on Saturday, She came to see me on Monday. I was approved for up to 10 visits but ended up not using them all because I was doing so well. Still it was nice to have her come out. She checked my temp, looked at my incisions and made sure everything was going well. It didn't cost me one cent extra. -
Looking for cheaper protein bars
BLERDgirl replied to zackly's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
The problem is the cheaper ones are more likely to be little more than glorified candy bars. I agree with @@Elode and others, if you want to save then make your own. The recipes are usually pretty simple; protein powder, nut butter as a binder, then whatever else you want to add in; rolled oats, cooked & cooled quinoa, dried fruit, etc... Just make sure you use an online recipe calculator to figure out the nutritional breakdown. -
troubel getting protein and food in.
BLERDgirl replied to fharris's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Seasonings helped me Garlic powder, ground rosemary, tumeric, lemon juice, lime juice etc... it made a difference. I also started adding back spices like cayenne and sriracha. I was a spicey food eater pre-op and I found a little bit post op helped without triggering acid. Other than making my Soups thicker I did things like oatmeal, refried Beans and soft scrambled eggs. I never ate baby food, the thought grossed me out. -
Stomache pain when eating
BLERDgirl replied to volsfan82's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It could be you need to eat slower or you need a PPI such as prilosec or omeprazole. Remember we need to eat snails pace slow. -
Concern about WLS and my fat cat!
BLERDgirl replied to animallover1247's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you can't move the cat then you need to protect yourself. sleep with a pillow on top of you so if he accidentally jumped on you again there is a buffer. If need be, you may need to board him for a few days or at least until the drain is pulled. You can also temporarily pad the doors and just let him deal. I had one cat when I got sleeved, but she's not a cuddly cat.
