Exercise? how soon?
BLERDgirl replied to BairwithMe's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is something that varies from doctor to doctor. I was walking from day 1. Using light 3 -5 lbs hands weight by week 2 and by week 3 once my incision scabbed I was back at aquafit water aerobics with no restrictions. If you were dancing and felt great, you may be ready to resume jazzercise even if you have to make some adaptations. Just give your doctor a call and confirm. If you do resume make sure you listen to your body and stop if you feel pain or get overly tired. -
Tired of Answering the Same Questions Over and Over? - Help Requested for Solution!
BLERDgirl replied to tcrehm's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
Special diets: Lactose/dairy allergies Vegetarian diets Organic options There was a very good article posted a few months back about what to look for when choosing a program, particularly taking after care into consideration. Here's my other question: How do we encourage people to check the FAQs or do a search before asking a question? From what I see a lot of the redundancy comes from people logging on and instead of searching, just posting their question or concern. -
Ideas for ready made stuff I can buy to eat?
BLERDgirl replied to wagyu's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I wouldn't recommend boxed meals like lean cuisine and such, even the low sodium ones are barely food. A good nutra bullet/Ninja blender will be invaluable to you. ETA: Totally agree a crockpot would be a great investment. Try socking up on staples: Low sodium broths are good. A precooked chicken breast is a good weekly investment. During the liquids stage it can be pureed then thinned with broth, during puree stage just pureed then soft food stage chopped up with a bit of broth to eat. Buy only what you can eat in a week. If you have more invest in freezer bags and separate them into sleeve size portions. With the Holiday's coming up you may want to do the same with turkey breast. Greek Yogurt is a good high Protein buy. If you buy the plain you can add a small bit of fruit to sweeten or use as a healthier alternative to sour cream. Canned Beans are good. Lentils, split pea or black bean have a decent amount of protein in them. I prefer low sodium organic, but it you buy the regular ones, just drain and rinse before eating. Many people like refried beans topped with shredded cheese and tomato sauce. Fish often come frozen and is easy to prepare. (Poached in a vegetable broth with a few herbs and seasonings added, baked with some lemon slices, baked under diced tomatoes.) Spices are you friend. My basics: pink or Kosher salt, garlic powder, black pepper, bay leaves, rosemary. I prefer fresh, but jarred works as well. eggs if you like them. At the beginning of the week boil a few eggs. It makes a great grab and go Breakfast and contain healthy fats. Cheese sticks - look for those made from low fat milk. They make a good snack. Nut butters - I was allowed one tbsp a day from the time I was on All Liquids. That one tablespoon blended in a Protein Drink is a nice change of pace and adds a nice protein boost to your protein drink. The closer you are to eating normal food you may be able to take advantage of a good deli or hot/cold salad bar. Just pop in and grab whatever high protein items are available. I would also recommend picking up some wheatgerm, flax powder or psyllium powder. Many sleevers have issues with constipation. A tsp a day sprinkled on yogurt, your protein drink or in Soup may help add a bit of Fiber to your diet so that is not an issue for you. -

REVISION APPROVED! SURGERY DEC 7

Unfortunately it sounds like you have a bit of a waiting game ahead of you. You're waiting for the meds to kick in and you're waiting for your new psych appointment. Other than seeking out an in person support group I can't think of anything else that might assist you. I'm not trying to sound trite, but just try & hang in there. Things will get better. It sounds like you are doing the right things, just give your body a chance to catch up.

BLERDgirl replied to anna9/15's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Could the side effects of the meds be any worse than how you are currently feeling? Why not try them and if things don't improve then you could stop them. You aren't the only one to have these issues post op, but they won't change unless you do something other than post on the forums. -
Post Op diet plan as given to you by the surgeon/nut
BLERDgirl replied to Ray92's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm vegetarian and my doctor still required protein from day 1. I was given ProSource Nocarb liquid protein in the hospital. My doctor wanted me aiming for that minimum of 60 grams of protein from the very beginning. -

If you are a person who is has issues with anxiety and/or panic attacks then any sort of stressful situation can trigger them. Having to relearn to eat, especially if you are a food addict or used to comforting yourself with food can certainly be a stressful situation. -
So a variation of tartar then? I missed that. Eating meat cooked or raw is all kind of gross to me. I do know that just like sushi there is a certain grade requirement for serving it uncooked and certain food acids or citrus can be used to "cook" it like in ceviche. In the end I guess it's whatever floats your boat.

@@sarahbethemails @@winklie - Unless I'm reading this wrong I think @@fernandfj was trying to say how to cook the leftover meat, not to try and eat it raw. ETA: Just went back and reread the thread. Apparently there is both a raw and cooked version and @@fernandfj mentions both. Sorry for the confusion.

First doctor appointment since surgery.
BLERDgirl replied to kvoneye's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
It's not uncommon for a doctor not to congratulate a pt on weight loss. That was the expectation. However, congrats! You're doing well. Now here's the hard part; that 60 gram of protein & 64 ounces of fluid is the minimum. You won't get there overnight, but each day you need to push yourself to do a bit more. In fact many doctors are changing that minimum to 75 - 80 & a lot of folks find they are more successful if they get 100grams daily. As for fluids I get mine by using my water bottles. I take them everywhere. They are all either 20 or 24 ounces. My goal is one in the morning, one in the afternoon & one in the evening. -
3 days after surgery (Oct 21) and so much gas!
BLERDgirl replied to 1000000's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
@@1000000 - There is no option in this. You have to at least sip Water. 2 -4 ounces a day is not enough. This is the time to challenge yourself. Walk and sip, walk and sip. Some have found gas x strips helpful. If you get dehydrated you will only feel worse. -

serious question for fellow "veterans"
BLERDgirl replied to CowgirlJane's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
THIS^^^ Happens a whole lot. But it's often along the lines of "I'm 2 weeks post-op my doctor says no pizza, can I eat it anyway?" Followed by a chorus of "one time won't hurt". When someone like CowgirlJane says that may not be wise they are accused of being mean. -

BLERDgirl replied to agalindo17's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Imagine how mean this people are that is felt as if there yelling on the Internet! Please understand this: Disagreeing is not yelling. If you are not taking your Vitamins because they make you sick, but you have talked this over with your doctor, then fine. It is more than understandable that if someone is having trouble drinking during those initial post-op days to make hydration the main focus. That does not mean that it's okay to never take vitamins. It just means in your particular set of circumstances that you had to choose one over the other. -
That makes sense. Prior to WLS I ate between 40 -50 grms of Protein daily. I made it a point to hit those goals and I lost weight. Sadly due to other health issues I would get sick and then regain. I spent a good 2 -3 years losing and regaining the same 35 - 50 lbs. Once I reach maintenance I plan to aim for 50 -60 gms of protein, but I'd love to discuss with with a medical professional versed in WLS surgery. BTW - That B12 deficit is a myth. They need to go by bloodwork. I was put on B12 sublingual. Every bloodwork check had my levels not only over but double! The kept cutting back the dosage until I was instructed to take it once a month. When the bottle ran out I stopped taking it. My annual bloodwork was perfect! I have been eating enough of a balanced diet that I do not need to supplement B12.

Things a Vegetarian should know before getting the sleeve?
BLERDgirl replied to nolongerhere's topic in Vegetarian or Vegan Eating
YES! I order an egg white omelet once when out to brunch because it was the safest thing on the menu. I think I would rather have eaten my shoe. It was disgusting. @@talkingmountain - I'm online often. feel free to drop me a message anytime. I'm thinking of making the transition to vegan. I may go see the homepath and discuss it with him. I expect this second year to be more challenging than the first and this may be the thing to help get me through it. -

Cleared for regular food
BLERDgirl replied to anna9/15's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I try to keep a stash of Snacks in my car so I don't make bad food choices. I keep Protein bars and single serving packs of nuts, usually pistachios, almonds or cashews. I've heard others also keep Jerky or dried meats. My go to fast food is a Dunkin Donuts egg & cheese wake up wrap. I peel off half the tortilla so I'm mostly eating egg and cheese. The next time your NUT gives you a list, ask her these same questions and write the answers on the list so you have it for future reference. -

BLERDgirl replied to anna9/15's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@anna9/15 - I would try a plain fast food chicken sandwich over Jimmy Johns unless you just plan to eat the lunch meat only. Just be careful because sometimes when meat are too dry they can be difficult to digest. Just be careful that fast food is not a main part of your daily diet. Even sleeved you can regain if you eat too much of the wrong thing. You would be better off cooking a chicken breast at home and eating it with a little light gravy to keep it moist. Also remember to eat slow and take small bites. Eventually you'll be able to bite and chew normally but as you re-introduce food you want to take it slow. @@Trinn - I was using sriracha probably around week 3 or 4. I just added a splash to my Soup or veg broth. I just didn't use as much as I usually do. I pulled back when I had issues with acid around month 3 - 6 but other than that time period I use it all the time. -

For me the only food restrictions I have are self imposed. I don't eat much bread, white rice, regular pasta, crackers, etc... I'm vegetarian so I don't eat beef, poultry, fish or pork but everything I like I can eat with no problems. I don't eat a lot of processed foods or fast foods. Spicy foods are no trouble. I put hot sauce on darn near everything -

How pain free I would feel. I had a hysterectomy 10 years prior so I expected more pain. At best, I had what could be described as mild soreness. Seeing my feet return to normal size seemingly over night was also a pleasant surprise.
