    step away

    From the album: MISC.

for those moments when the scale is not your friend
  2. Stop weighing yourself daily if it makes you nuts. Hate to break it to you but weight loss is not a linear process. You will gain and stall as well as lose. However if you stick to the plan you will lose. People have different schedules for weighing themselves. I only weight myself once a month or when I have a doctor's appointment. Other weigh weekly and yes, some weigh daily. If you are the sort to get upset at any fluctuation, then you need to put the scale away. Focus on eating properly, drinking your fluids and exercising. Take your measurements. I do neck, boobs, waist and hips. Update that monthly. When the scale does not move, you will often be able to get a better idea of how your body is changing. Back to your original question, yes it is perfectly normal to gain before you lose. Especially in the first few weeks. If you are following your nutritionist eating plan, you did not move too fast.

Do you have a nutritionist? It sounds like you need to have a sit down with her.

    Anyone familiar with this?

I believe common thought is the body cannot absorb more than 30 grams Protein per hour. I usually make a Protein shake that is 31 - 38 grams total. I drink half before my workout and half post workout. It balances out because I am ingesting this over a 3 hour period.

    Hey I'm new????

Welcome ! There's loads of great info to be found here. One helpful tip is to take advantage of the search feature before posting. Most questions you have can be found that way.

    Pre Op Exercise Plan

I did aquafit classes for 2 years prior to WLS. I swear the core strengthening work made all the difference in the world in my recovery. I had very minimal pain post op. Walked in recovery, could get in and out the bed unassisted and did not need any pain meds. post op.

    So what's changed?

I had a gift card and went to Starbucks today after a doctor's appointment. I was hungry since I had to fast for bloodwork. Thought I'd get a coffee and a salad and chill. I did treat myself to a single cookie and plain coffee. The salads were all just too high calorie/low Protein to be worth it. Never imagined that happening.

@@Sophie74656 - try making a paste with the curry powder a little Water and some evoo. slather that on cauliflower and roast (I slice mine into thick "steaks".) Soooo good!
  10. Bananas are crazy high in sugar.

    Hotdogs

As always nutrition questions really should be directed to your nutritionist but it's protein. I'd be careful with all the sodium and nitrates typically in a hot dog but otherwise if you are cleared for all food as tolerated, go for it.

    Holiday/ vacation woes

Plan, plan, plan. As a person with food allergies I was used to planning for any outing so the adjustment to post op life has been a bit easier. I pick my battles and splurges. Visit to stately home - have just the tea Seaside - depending on what stage you are in I might have a small scoop of ice cream in a cup. Nice artisan bakery, I had to watch as family had almond croissants and bought still warm fresh bread. - I might allow myself one bite, but I would also pack a Protein bar so as to not be further tempted. I queued for AGES in a coffee shop to get a skinny latte, but they had NO skimmed milk. A skinny latte is just about the only thing I can enjoy and feel normal when I'm out and about. - call ahead or pack a single serving pack of skimmed milk. Get the drink plain and add your own. When I take a trip to the shore I am more active than usual. We do a lot of walking and I love playing in the Water. In short I am active enough to earn these little treats. This is the start of a new lifestyle . We have to reexamine things and make them work for us. Now that you have had this experience perhaps looking at holiday celebrations and developing work arounds will help you not feel deprived.

    Roasted Vegetables

I'm very random. It depends on what's in the fridge. It's mostly whatever veg I have and a little EVOO. Herbs and spices vary. I tend to add garlic at the last minute because I hate the taste of burnt garlic. If it's dried herbs and powdered spices the I wait until the veg are done and lightly toss them in a bowl right out the oven. I like to use them either as a side dish or as a salad with a little balsamic vinegar. I LOVE roasted Brussel sprouts with dried cranberries & smoked tempeh (my sister uses bacon). I serve them with a sunny side up egg and a little grated Parmesan.
  14. I agree with @@Dub, figure out why you self sabotaged and develop a plan not to do that again. Then move on. You ate bad yesterday, do better today. The End.
  15. Word of advice: I think this is a really good idea, but unless the software has it built in that your must do a search or check the FAQ before being allowed to post many people still going to post repetitive questions. It's just how the internet works. We now live in the TL;DR (Too Long: Didn't Read) age.
  16. One other word of advice. Change your language. It's a mental thing. A diet is temporary. While the various phases you go through as you resume regular eating may change this is NOT a diet. This is relearning to eat in a healthier manner.
  17. It doesn't matter. The insurance company is not going to reimburse you and finding out you *might* have gotten it covered through appeals is only going to piss you off. Just keep in mind going forward, most insurance companies have appeals processes.
  18. @@forgetit - I'm sorry that's not what I meant to say. My point is your conversations & meeting with your surgeon or nutritionist need to be a give and take, an actual conversation or discussion about what works for you and your body specifically. My program gave us a manual to follow. Yes it had general guidelines for all bariatric pts, but when I meet with the nutritionist I then discussed with her what would work for me. I am vegetarian and have several food allergies. I can't have artificial food dyes or most artificial sweeteners. My food plan took that into account. On a message board such as this you will a million different answers based on the wide variety of programs out there. When I recommend someone ask their doctor or nutritionist, I mean take the same questions you are posing here and ask them. Let the professional explain their reasoning. The all liquids phase is tough for most of us. Not much to do there but grin and bear it. I did find that using unflavored Protein powder helped. I did 2 shakes and the had vegetable broth with unflavored Protein Powder in the evenings. I hit my protein goals but having that savory broth in the evenings made things a little bearable. Lastly if you are already on a PPI you may need to increase the dosage. It's not unusual. I started at 20 mgs and had to go up to 40 mgs to get relief. pastas, rice and breads? A year out I don't eat them much and honestly, I don't want them. On the occasion I do have Pasta unless it's in vegetable Soup or something, it's bean base pasta. When I have rice, it's black, or brown. Hang in there. The early days are a challenge but worth the struggle.
  19. Your body should eat itself, you've got enough fat to feed it. ???? What does your plan say? Are you clear liquids or all liquids. How long? How long for purees & soft foods. The liquid phase is challenging for us all. Hang in there. Make sure you aren't experiencing head hunger or acid which can often mask as hunger pains? Do not compare programs. You signed up for this one. If you have questions or concerns talk it over with your nutritionist and try to come up with reasonable workarounds or compromises.
  20. I'm not knocking anyone's program, I'm just curious as to why. I have no doubt you can hit protein goals without it. Also seems rather arbitrary to allow cottage cheese but not yogurt. I understand not allowing the flavored yogurts, but why not plain Greek yogurt?

When did you start eating cherry tomatoes

Week 3 /4 I think. I liked cooking them with eggs. Had them raw by weeks 5/6. If they are allowed on your food plan just try them and see.
  22. Did he explain why? I rarely use milk these days but used to drink almond milk. I stopped because it's too much carbs and fat for the protein payoff. I still use plain greek yogurt regularly though and my NUT has never had an issue with it. I'd love tot hear his reasoning why he doesn't recommend it.

    Anyone familiar with this?

Those are some of the more popular protein powders. Whether you like them or not really is just a matter of taste. There are literally dozens of threads for and against each one discussing at length which ones they do and do not like and how they use them. Try using the search feature and looking for protein powders. It should bring them up.
