2 months post op/ feeling malnutrition
BLERDgirl replied to Account deleted's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mine was a precaution as well. I had a very bad abscess from my hysterectomy years before. I must have been doing well enough in the hospital to have it removed before discharge. Especially since they arranged for a visiting nurse to check on me. -
anyone still on here that's more than a month out of surgery?

Omega Loop (Mini) BypassAs with the standard Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGBP) the Omega Loop mini gastric bypass (MGBP) works both by restricting the amount of food that can be eaten at any one time, and by altering gut hormones involved in appetite control. MGBP was first used in the late 1960s but abandoned in the 1970s. Today, because of developments in laparoscopic (“keyhole”) surgery, MGBP has started to come back into fashion and is being promoted as a quick and effective alternative to standard gastric bypass. It is an operation that is gaining more recognition as a procedure for eradication of diabetes in insulin and non-insulin dependent patients. Patient following surgery show immediate improvement of their diabetes, some coming off insulin within a few days post-surgery. How is the operation performed? In the first part of mini gastric bypass surgery the stomach is divided and a small tube of stomach created which becomes the pouch. This is the restrictive part of the procedure and means that only a very small amount of food can be taken at any one time. Next, the surgeon brings up a loop of bowel (between 150-200cm long) and joins this to the lower part of the stomach pouch. (The joining of bowel to bowel, or stomach to bowel is called an “anastamosis”). This means that food passes from the small pouch into the small bowel where it meets the digestive juices which have moved downwards from the main part of the stomach. In effect, therefore, about 2m of small bowel has been bypassed before absorption of food (and calories) can take place. Fewer calories absorbed, means weight loss. Watch Omega Loop (Mini) Gastric Bypass Video How does mini-gastric bypass differ from the standard bypass? The main difference between the standard Roux-en-Y gastric bypass procedure (RYGBP) and the mini gastric bypass (MGBP) can be seen by comparing the two diagrams below. It is clear that in the case of the MGBP there is only one anastamosis, whereas in the RYGBP there are two – an upper and a lower. Because of this the MGBP can be done in less time than the RYGBP and – at least theoretically – with fewer early complications. Studies show that weight loss and health benefits resulting from mini gastric bypass are essentially the same as for standard Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. As for me, I'm 7 weeks out and doing surprisingly well. -

My drain was pulled when I was discharged. -
I do this as well and also add a bit of avocado to it. I love greek yogurt! I also add a tiny bit to them when scrambling and make the super soft almost like a savory egg custard.

What is the normal time of recovery for the sleeve?
BLERDgirl replied to Grandma2tweeties's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was feeling pretty much back to normal and bored by 1½. When I had my 2 week f/u my doctor released me to drive and resume normal activities. The only thing I had to hold off on was swimming because my last incision hadn't completely scabbed over yet. -
I just want to go to the bathroom! UGH
BLERDgirl replied to kikicoates78's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I finished the stool softeners a week ago, but so far I'm doing okay. I go at least once a day. I 'm allergic to artificial sweeteners but as long as I drink plenty of water and add in a bit of fresh fruit and green veg, I'm good. -

I thought you were referring to vitamins & supplements. I'm okay with my proteins, but thanks for the info. -
Changing how I consume my protein
BLERDgirl replied to Kindle's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I don't like chobani. They us milk from cows fed with grains grown with GMO's. I buy FAGE 0% greek plain yogurt and add my own mix ins or use it as a base for a protein shake. -
I think just a a precaution. I have no history of DVT's and my veins were all clear on scan. Hope your surgery goes well!

@@Kindle Can you provide a link? There are thousands of threads and how things show up may vary depending on how someone has their settings set up. I'm not seeing the thread you said you bumped. -

Interesting. I'll go read the other thread. From what I'm reading it sounds like my doctor errs on the side of caution. There are several things he did as a precaution that I'm seeing many other doc didn't do. I had the IVC filter just in case, and was started on prophylactic doses of colace & prilosec . I was even sent a visiting nurse when they found out I lived alone. I'm not complaining, my surgery was a cake walk and I feel great! I'd rather be safe than sorry. There is a thread about protein absorption titled "changing how I consume protein" in the food and nutrition subforum. I just "bumped" it to the top of the protein, Vitamin and supplements section. It explains the rate of absorption and implications for us. I just had my 6 week last week so I won't see the team for another month. I'll have to make a note so I can ask them when I return. -

I was started on colace in the hospital. I had surgery on Thursday and didn't have my first post op poo until Monday. However, I wasn't uncomfortable because I had done the pre-op diet and I though once I had enough food in me, something would give. I was peeing just fine. I was discharged on full liquids. Sunday I was really windy but not painfully so. Monday I went with no straining and I've been regular since. Try the tea. If you aren't back to normal try taking a stool softer like colace. -

This is interesting. You are the second person I've come across not on the regular list of Vitamins & nutrients. From everything I have read bariatric patients need a multi Vitamin 2x's a day, Calcium, Vitamin D, & B12 supplements and some may even require extra Iron. It was my understanding that our bodies no longer can absorbs all the nutrients we need and thus require supplements for life. I'm wonder if this is a new thing. It may be why you are feeling so tired and week. Here's the discussion with the other person I came across. -

I was told by my nutritionist that you should spend no longer than 45 mins eating any meal. Your times for what you are eating sound about right. The point is not to spend more than 45 mins eating something like your yogurt because after that your body can't absorb the nutrients until after it has digested what is already in your tummy. -
Going to an Info Seminar on Gastric Sleeve next week - Scared and Excited!
BLERDgirl replied to Bonifaccia's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I did the sleeve. I'm 7 weeks post op and feel GREAT! I had a wonderful hospital experience. No pain at all, walking in recovery. No gas pains. I am very pleased with my surgeon and medical team. They offer support groups at a variety of times and locations. They provided a helpful binder that literally walked me through the process from start to finish. The pre nutrition class was very informative. They carefully reviewed the various types of Protein drinks. The binder had 2 pages of suggestions to try. They also reviewed the Vitamins and supplements needed and again the binder had 2 pages listing what was needed. At my bariatric appts I met with the nurse practitioner, the nutritionist and the surgeon. The nutritionist always takes time to review my food diary and offer helpful suggestions. I fell very comforted with this hands on approach that I am being guided into a new, healthier lifestyle. -
I do 3 different ones. The powder I use is CVS Whey, the premix I use is Orgain Organic and I also occasionally use Prosource liquid. Switching up helps keep me from getting bored.

5 days post op, gurgle coming up throat

Sounds like the dreaded slimes. It can happen if you eat/drink too fast. Try slowing down & taking smaller sips. -

BLERDgirl replied to Jennifer Rogers's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Gulping down anything is not a good idea. You need to sip slowly or you may end up vomiting everything back up. If you don't like the Protein you are taking why not switch up? There are zillions of them out there. You may get bored only drinking but keep searching until you find one that is at least tolerable. As for "time" I'm assuming the means each meal. Since we are aiming for 60gms a day that means at least 20gm each meal. ETA: Are there any support groups offered by your doctor in your area? It might be helpful to drop in to some of them. ETA 2: How are you doing with your Vitamins & supplements? -

BLERDgirl replied to Bonifaccia's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I was considering the surgery but didn't want the bypass. I am the type that researches everything before I make a decision. I looked at 2 different hospitals. The seminars were helpful in discovering what to expect and also what other options were available to me other than bypass. I like hearing about the options available so I would have time to think about it before I met with the surgeon. -
2 months post op/ feeling malnutrition
BLERDgirl replied to Account deleted's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That doesn't sound right. Everything I've read says ALL bariatric patients are put on Vitamins and supplements post op. Our bodies no longer aborb the nutrients we need. This may be why you are feeling run down. I am 7 weeks post op and feel pretty much back to normal. I'm back to working out 2 -3 times a week and hoping to up that to 3 - 4 times a week. From a quick google I get: Cleveland Clinic UCSF Medical Center Med. Navy Obesity Action.org American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery *Scroll down to table 5 When did you have your surgery? -
I'm 7 weeks out as well. I do what I did pre-surgery. In the car I keep larabars, and either almond/cashews or pistachios. I always carry a bottle of Water. Processed food doesn't always sit well with me because I have multiple food allergies & I'm vegetarian. If I am pushed I will get a egg crossaint at Dunkin Donuts. I toss the bread and eat the egg. My other option is a veggie burger from Burger King no ketchup/mayo and again I toss the bun. At the support group one woman says she had a small mini cooler she keeps in her car. I think I may adopt this practice as well. This way I can carry more safe foods with me and not run the risk of being tempted by fast food .

First day back at the gym!

I copied it directly from the handbook. I am really surprised no one went over this with you. Please stop in the List of Surgeons & Hospital thread and share you experiences. It may help those considering surgery. Your bariatric team should have informed you of this. If you are seeing your PCP,you may want to print that and take it with you.
