    Fat Family

Nothing. She's grow and her weight is her journey. You can't live it for her. The best you can do is live by example. Follow your path and show (not tell) how much better your quality of life is after your WLS. Part of being a parent is letting go and allowing your child to fall down and get themselves back up.

    Complications: HELP!

Are you exercising? Even if you just take a walk regularly it will help retrain those muscles and strengthen your core. Are you taking Vitamins? I've noticed not every doctor follows the same Vitamin & supplement protocol. At the very least take your multi-vitamin 2 x's a day.

    change name

You can't do it using the app. You need the full web version. On your phone's web browser, go to bariatricpal.com Once there log in. In the upper right by your current user name is a little cog. That s the pull-down menu. Click My Profile>Edit Profile on the left side will be a menu, click Display Name. You can then change your username. Make sure you scroll down to the bottom and click Save.

    RASHES

I am allergic to latex. My hospital uses non latex band aides and gloves, however what people fail to realize is there is a tiny bit of latex in the glue used in the tape so ever though the bandage part was safe the glue wasn't. I got a rash everywhere they had taped a bandage to me. Since they couldn't get a vein for my IV they went into my jugular vein on my neck. My entire shoulder was one big rash. The doctor told me to use hydro-cortisone cream until it went away. Check with your doctor that there isn't anything in your Vitamins or supplements causing the rash. Use a topical hydro-cortisone cream for the itching.

    Need soup suggestions

I make a lot of bean based soups because I'm vegetarian. I also made a really tasty, but not so pretty dreamed spinach soup. I used veg stock (either my own or low sodium Amy's), a container or premade Orgain organic protein drink (vanilla flavor). I pureed a can of low sodium whit beans with 2 cups of spinach and some roasted garlic. Mix it all together, salt & pepper to taste, a dash of cumin. If you want I you could add some chicken, but I don't eat chicken I added some shredded blanched spinach for garnish.

    Hungry?

How were you vegetarian eating KFC bowls? Vegan would be challenging, but vegetarian isn't. Especially if you are ovo-lacto vegetarian. I am considering going vegan once I am a year out. I've been thinking about it for a while and if things go well I'm fairly certain I will.

    Telling about surgery

I don't understand why people can't defend their position without insulting others for theirs. It's at the point now where this thread is just going in circles. FYI - If you have to start every post with "I'm sorry if this offends..." perhaps you might want to rethink participating in an online support group.

    Hungry?

Were you a veg before surgery? It's challenging but not impossible. I've dealt with so many anti vegetarian nutritionist it annoys me to no end. One of the reasons I went with the hospital instead of the other hospital I looked at was because the nutritionist was so rude and condescending toward vegetarians.
  10. I have had every allergy test known to man. Scratch test, blood and urine. I'm pretty sure I have chronic autoimmune. The doctor said that there is a small percentage of people who get hives like this despite nothing showing on the test. They have me on Zyrtec D daily. It lessened them but they didn't go away completely. The only thing that has made a difference has been the surgery.

    No liquid diet no drain

It was worse than the surgery. The lancing was the most painful part. It had gotten quite deep. I then had daily wound care from a visiting nurse. Thankfully I didn't have that this time.
  12. Can you drink milk? Maybe a glass before bed would help.

    No liquid diet no drain

I was the same. I was advised to reduce calories pre-op, but no liquid pre-op diet. A drain is place to drain off excess fluids. Sometime when you have a laparoscopic procedure done instead of that cavity healing from the inside out or bottom to the top, the outer layer closes up first and then Fluid builds up creating and abscess of infected fluids. In some cases a drain is put in so that doesn't happen. I had a drain because when I had had a previous surgery I developed an abscess. It was very deep. The doctor then had to lance that and pack it with sterile gauze. They did what's called "wicking". Basically the wound is packed with gauze and each say the wound is cleaned, the dressing changed to allow the wound to heal without closing on the outside until the inside is healed. My drained was pulled when I was discharged.
  14. For some people it does go faster, and for others it doesn't Either way it's 10lbs less than you weighed before. Slow and steady wins the race.

    Learning the hard way

Tofu takes on the flavors you cook it with. There are many ways to prepare it. If you check out Pinterest you'll come up with loads of them. My secret to cooking with it is to drain the water out, then freeze it. Once you thaw it out the texture changes and will have a bit more bite to it. Marinate it in whatever marinade you want, and add it to a stir fry. It's also good baked on a low heat with whatever seasonings you like or diced into small cubes and added to miso or vegetable soup.
  16. I plan my water. Wake up drink 4 ounces. I usually do a Protein shake in the morning because I'm going to the gym and I can't work out on food. So I have a shake pre & post workout. After lunch I get in maybe another 3-4 ounces of water. Same with Snacks. The biggest help for me is I try to finish dinner by 7pm. I then spend the rest of the evening sipping my water. I avg about 48 ounces a day which is the minimum my doctor wants me to drink. I'd love to hit 64 but I don't know if that will ever happen.

    Exercise

How active were you before surgery? I was doing water aerobics 3 times a well pre-op. I resumed on week 3 and I can do the entire 1 hour class no problem.

    Telling about surgery

Context. If I'm talking here I say WLS simply because we have a variety of people who have had different surgeries. It's a sort of short hand catch all. When I've discussed it in real life I've called it gastric sleeve. The one person who over heard a conversation simply asked if I had had surgery. She has already heard and knew what type of surgery. When she asked I simply said yes. I'm not going run from the words.
  19. You might not want to call people names. It comes across as rude and condescending. I assume you have never had a severe allergic reaction to fake sugar or experienced any type of allergic reaction. I have. I've spend fake too many days in the ER and a lovely 4 day stint in a medical induce coma from a severe allergic reaction . So yes for me fake sugars are indeed to be avoided. FYI - I don't have and never have had diabetes or even been close to it. There are many work arounds to fake sugar. Sugar is not the enemy, over use and abuse of it is.
  20. Someone that has as many allergies as me! So far scuralose hasn't bothered me. But it's splenda so I don't want to push it. I also can't have articial dyes and food colorings, particularly red dyes. I balanced it out with Greek yogurt which I happen to love. FAGE 0 %. 4 ounces is 12grams of Protein and you could add honey to it to sweeten it or add a bit of milk and blend it to thin it out. It doesn't cook up well though. I was sent home on full liquids though so I made Soups with Beans and yogurt. I cooked them together, then pureed them, then put them back on the stove to reheat and thinned it out with low sodium veg broth. I went from full liquids to puree to soft so I was able to work around it. I also used Orgain organics. It's sweetened with brown rice syrup premade shakes. I liked adding this to my morning coffee. I even made a Soup with the vanilla flavor, but I added a load of garlic to mask the vanilla taste.
  21. Just thought of a few: The first one I noticed when I came home from the hospital. My feet weren't swollen. I had forgotten what it was like to have feet that weren't puffy. The second is pretty big for me. I haven't had an episode of hives since I before my surgery. I don't mean ordinary hives, I get full body, painful itching hives. No matter how many allergy test the doctors runs they can't figure out why. I have no idea if it's the limited diet or what, but I am grateful. I did have one instance of facial swelling when I went from pureed to soft foods, but I was having facial swelling & hives at least once a week prior to surgery. Once in 7 weeks is not bad.

    My Journey

I didn't have any gas pains. I was up walking in recovery.

    Does Everyone Get a "Drain"

Yeah, you feel that tube zipping through you. Not painful, but weird.

    Snack ideas?

Usually chocolate sometime vanilla if I want to add fruit. I can only have real pudding made for scratch since the additive in instant pudding is gives me hives and fake sugar does too. That's too much work so I just do the greek yogurt. oh and avocado+ a tiny bit of almond milk+ vanilla protein powder taste like pistachio ice cream. I add a dash of nutmeg. Soooo good!
