It's not free. They are billing your insurance. Any of us can call our insurance company and ask if they cover nutrition shakes and supplements. If they say yes, your doctor then writes them out as prescriptions. I had a few people in my support group who got their vitamins & supplements covered that way.

How to tell my 4 y.o. about surgery
BLERDgirl replied to altraoiche's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You don't have to tell them specifically what you are going in for but you need to tell them something. Especially at their age. You're going to come home sore and tired. Their imaginations will be much worse. -
What do I bring to the hospital?
BLERDgirl replied to peki31's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Nope, they will give you ice chips. I kept it simple: extra large panties to wear home, iPad, charger iPhone, toothbrush, toothpaste and deodorant. The gave me gowns large enough to cover. In fact they gave me 2 so I didn't have to worry about my fanny being exposed. they also provided these sock with grips on the bottom for my feet. I had a private room and the hospital staff treated me well. -
Sharp pain under main incision --did I do too much?
BLERDgirl replied to sarina55's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Sounds like you did too much. Take it easy for a day or 2 and see how it goes. -
Going Home Post-Surgery: What to expect
BLERDgirl replied to heynowkc's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctor keeps his patients 2 days. I went in at 10 am, not sure when I went into surgery. I was tuck in recovery a long time waiting for my bed to be ready. It was probably close to 4 by the time I got in my room. By the next day, I wanted to go home. I wasn't in pain and I was bored. Maybe your doctor will be nice and let you go in 24 hours if you have no complications. -

Not feeling sure about going through with WLS...
BLERDgirl replied to nolongerhere's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's okay to like yourself and want to be better. I didn't have high blood pressure or diabetes. I always thought I was cute. I agree with @@Babbs this is a lifestyle change. Make sure you are ready to commit. Okay so I'm home now. Let me just say I don't eat low cal food ever. However, like @islandsneezer I am a vegetarian with multiple food and medicine allergies. Mine are: Foods: seafood, stevia, most artificial sweeteners, MSG, food dyes, especially red dye. Medicine: toviaz, percocit, gabapantin, iodine, and latex. I always had an active life style. Plenty of friends, traveled the world, and I love fashion. I have a bunch of minor, but chronic health issues. Now all of these issues individually or in a smaller sized body are completely manageable and tolerable. However the weight made them worse. To the point that I was unable to work. I was told that WLS might make them more manageable. Guess what? I've had 1 very minor episode of swollen lips since my surgery. I no longer get up all night peeing. Back to low cal, restricted diet. I don't do that. One of the things I had to when trying to manage my allergies was keep a food diary. I started eating "clean" Basically no processed foods. I cook most things from scratch. Other than the Protein shakes I still do that. So I never went on a diet. I just started being more mindful of what I ate. I gave up sodas and only drink Water and occasionally fruit juices. As I mentioned before the excess issue is an issue I'll deal with when/if it happens. A good friend of mine had bypass surgery. She lost 60% of her body weight and has no excess skin. All I know is I was 51 and I plan to live another 40/50 years so I wanted to be able to enjoy it. -
Not feeling sure about going through with WLS...
BLERDgirl replied to nolongerhere's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For me it wasn't just the weight. I have other health issues that were not co-morbs., but effected my quality of life. I was told the wls might help with that. So far it has. I would say this; if you're biggest concern is eating low calorie you might want to question your relationship with food. So far I have been able to everything I ate pre-op but in smaller portions. I can't say I miss eating massive portions of food. I'm exercising and wearing compression wear. I hope the slower wls of the sleeve will allow things to snap back. If I need to I will have skin removed. -
As long as the spice doesn't irritate your tummy, I would try it.

I've had hardboiled. I just dice them up really small and take care to chew really well.

How to tell my 4 y.o. about surgery
BLERDgirl replied to altraoiche's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I worked as a Child Life Specialist. Part of our philosophy was to explain things to children in the most simple yet honest way possible. So you say: "Mommy's going to see a doctor who going to fix her tummy." If he ask if it will hurt, you tell him, "No because the doctor will give me special medicine to make me go to sleep so I won't feel anything and hen he's done, he'll wake me up." If he doesn't ask, don't volunteer it. Explain he's going to stay with grandmom for a few days while you are visiting the doctor. Let him know when you go home you won't be able to ___________ (whatever you call it when your rough house) because your tummy will be sore for a while. Let him know you can do other things like read books together some other less physical activity. Remind him it was like when he got his boo-boo_______ and for a few days it was fun to touch that boo-boo. Keep it all matter of fact and non scary. Children pick up non verbal cues. If your scared and nervous, he will sense it. You may need to have this conversation more than once. In fact I recommend it. Post op whenever he want to initiate rough play remind him that you can't do _____ right now, but you can do _____ offer reading or an alternate non physical activity. -
CONGRATULATIONS! That is awesome news!

Biotin is for hair & nails. It won't make you less tired or sleepy. You should talk to your doctor about B12 or my extra D or D3. They can tell you what dosage to take.

Turmeric for bone/joint pain?
BLERDgirl replied to Pam Peltz's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I would ask my doctor. I had no problems with it, but I wasn't taking massive quantities. I just used maybe a quarter tsp in my smoothies and sprinkled it on food while cooking. It may work differently since it's all natural. BTW - OP is post op so I think she's fine. -
Yes. My doctor also gave me the script for omeprazole. Take it, you will be much more comfortable.

Who said they have 30 days to mail the letter? BCBS? If so you may have to wait until a few days after the 17th and if no letter appears, call them back. Until then there is nothing to do but wait those 30 days out.

That was me when I took my first pilates class. Even doing the modified positions I was wiped out! Stick with it, it gets better.

Not Given A Pre Op Diet... Should I be worried?
BLERDgirl replied to Five0swife's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Not at all. Not every doctor requires a pre-op diet. Mine didn't. He simply suggested cutting back on the amount of calories I was eating in the weeks leading up to my surgery and of course to be NPO the night before. -
I try to eat as clean as possible so I shy away from overly processed foods. I'm also allergic to most fake sugars and stevia. I use real sugar, raw honey and occasionally maple syrup. Once thing I discovered was once I stopped with the fake, processed foods I craved sugar a whole lot less. Most days fruit will curb any sweet cravings I have. While I avoid anything I feel I would binge on, I will buy something like 1 Hershey's kiss because I'm LOVE chocolate. This is not about a life of deprivation, this is about changing our eating habits to more reasonable ones.

Heading back to ER again, prayers please
BLERDgirl replied to nprcowboy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It may be time to get your primary care doc involved. Insurance will typically pay for a follow up with your primary or you can ask them to bill it as a sick visit. You can also call your ins co. & explain your concerns. State you feel you need a second opinion -
My program requires you attend and information seminar before they will even schedule you with the surgeon, I then had to attend at least one support group meeting before my surgery. I would go in with a pen and pad to listen and takes notes.

Can I get a Sleep Paralysis while under Anesthesia?
BLERDgirl replied to Slimsoon1988's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The sleep study center does need to know but more importantly your surgeon and anesthesiologist need to know. -
I take biotin for my hair. I am menopausal so I've been taking it for a while now. When I heard some people have trouble with hair loss I decided to continue taking it. So far no hair loss. Every doctor has a different protocol since the sleeve is fairly new. Some doctors like mine err on the side of caution and recommend the same vitamin/supplement protocol as bypass patients. If you feel okay with what you are taking and your doctor has no concerns, I wouldn't worry about it.

Can I get a Sleep Paralysis while under Anesthesia?
BLERDgirl replied to Slimsoon1988's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Have you made your doctor's aware of this condition? I don't think you need to worry about it while under anesthesia since that's not a true sleep. However the anesthesiologist does need to be aware so he can monitor you more closely. -
