Pre op diet frustration!
BLERDgirl replied to mduffield's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sounds like the metabolism hasn't caught up with the changes yet. Your body may be holding onto every little calorie while it adjust to the changes in your diet. Hang in there! -
I agree. Contact your doctor, but also look at more food based proteins such as yogurt, soups, etc... At 5 weeks you may be ready to transition to soft foods or purees. Just check with your team first.

Calves hurt
BLERDgirl replied to Alexandra Jackson's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@Tashabella - If you're like me your pitting edema may be to lack of activity. When I was working a desk job I started having trouble with that. It's one of the reasons I started taking Water aerobics. I can't take water pills and drinking 6-8 glasses of water a day wasn't helping. I needed to increase the circulation in my legs. One month after I started water aerobics 2 x's a week my legs cleared up. -
Following the rules
BLERDgirl replied to Unhappysleever's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@Tashabella - If you think you still need supplemental Protein, try the unflavored protein, like Prosource, Isopure, Un jury or GENEPRO and add it to Soups & broth instead. As for drinking Water, try setting alerts on your phone. Something like drink half a cup every hour. As for exercise start simple. Google for quick workouts or check On Demand with your cable provider. Look for 10 - 15 min work out. Do them in the morning and in the evening. You'll have 30 minutes of exercise and not even feel it. If you need to go simpler, get some really light hand weights. 3lbs -5lbs would do. Walk the length of your house 3 times a day holding the weights. Swing your arms slightly as you walk. -
YAY! Wishing you well!

If you doctor puts you on Water pills you should be replacing that potassium. Eat a banana, drink some coconut water or gatorade. I can't use water pills because it triggers my BPPV so if you experience dizziness or vertigo call your doctor ASAP. -
Worst "compliment" you have gotten since surgery
BLERDgirl replied to Lacowgirl72's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Fat may be a descriptive word, but the context and intent in which it is used makes all the difference in the world. I even refer to myself as fat. I have no illusions regarding my size. I'm the one who's buying my clothes. A good girlfriend can and should be honest with me. I expect a close friend to check me if I am wrong. A casual friend or acquaintance trying to throw shade? Nope, not gonna float. Do I have a thick skin? Yes, so I rarely get or tolerate that type of treatment. I don't keep toxic people in my life who think they are "keeping it real" by being rude. -
@@tomi71 - great tip. I no longer like WW because they encourage too much fake and processed food but I like the idea of having free support group mtgs & weigh ins. My doctor offers follow every few months until year 1 and then annual check ups. They also like to have veterans pop in to the support groups. I also agree it's great to make the in person groups. Ours are facilitated by the bariatric nutritionist.

It liquefies it. I use fage0% which is pretty thick to begin with but once it's blended in the nutra bullet it doesn't go back to that thickness.

Worst "compliment" you have gotten since surgery
BLERDgirl replied to Lacowgirl72's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
It's not the word fat, it's the way it's being used. The context being "you used to be unattractive/ugly, etc..." To use slang that is what's called "shade". As for me I keep getting the "aren't you glad to be off all those medications?" comment. Especially when I go for f/u labs. Why is it rude? Because despite my high BMI, I had NO co-morbities.No diabetes, no hypertension or high blood pressure, even my arthritic knee which was a result of a skiing accident no longer bothered me because I had been taking Water aerobics for the past 3 years. -
Struggling with not eating post op

First week I was cool. Sip, sip, walk back and forth in the house or go outside and walk to the corner and back then take a nap. Second week I was stir crazy and ready to toss those shakes out the window! I wasn't emotional just restless. Hang in there, it will be over soon! -

THE FIRST 10 DAYS POST OP
BLERDgirl replied to practicalshopper's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@practicalshopper. - Thanks for sharing. Each individual is different. I had no pain from day 1. Happy to hear things are improving for you. BTW- Barium swallows are indeed nasty things. I had mine pre-op since I was required to have an Upper GI prior to surgery. @@mdlange - It depends on the person. Some people have experienced being able to drink large quantities right off the bat some people find ways to nibble even with the restrictions. Most people experience restriction once they are back to normal food. Other still experience cravings. However I think some of those are people who are "head hungry" and not truly hungry. The surgery will help, but there is still a bit of will power involved. New eating behaviors have to be learned. -
I used Prosource nocarb liquid protein. They started me on it in the hospital. Each packet is 15gms of protein so 4 of these a day in herbal tea, mixed in water and you're done.
-
If you are really creative you can make your won Protein bar and balls. Just google for recipes. I did it once. They came out pretty okay but it ended up being more than I could eat. I keep an emergency bar in my glove compartment. I like snacking on things like apple slices with almond butter, cheese sticks, nut (almond or cashew), oranges or sometime even a ice cup of hot chocolate will settle me.
-
There was a brief discussion here. It seems people are doing a variety of things. I have a few pairs of compression yoga pants and tops that I have gotten from Lane Bryant and Old Navy. They hold me in for day to day activities. I also have a few body shapers that I wear when I am dress in regular clothes. It's early days yet so I am trying to exercise in the hopes that some of it snaps back. Looking at what's occurring now. I may end up with excess skin on my thighs. I'm not overly concerned, just taking note and doing what I can to minimize it as much as possible.
-
You can try coconut water, pedialyte or a sports drink like gatorade. Drink as much as you can. I started adding lost of ice to my protein drinks to get in more water. I also used a liquid protein that I mixed with herbal tea so I could get water and protein in at the same time.

MFP is not set up for bariatric patients. It is set up for the typical 1200-1660 calorie diet. When you eat less than that it give that warning message. Simply ignore it You can set up the time you eat when you are setting up your food diary. Go to settings>Food and Exercise Diary Settings and scroll down to midway. -

THE FIRST 10 DAYS POST OP
BLERDgirl replied to practicalshopper's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Can I ask why there was a such a whirlwind to perform your surgery? -
My doctor put me on colace stool softener in the hospital and for 30 days post op. Thankfully I had my first BM 2 days after discharge and have been regular ever since. It's getting even better now that I am back on regular food. Occasionally I will even go twice a day!
-
I do it without the stevia. For added protein you can also mix in a ½tbsp of nut butter
-
I think the idea is if the doctor catches early they have you work on reducing it through diet before surgery. Speak with your doctor about your concerns and go from there.
