    Sick congested what to do?

You can call your doctor's office to check, but I'm pretty sure nyquill will be okay. I take ZyrtecD and flonase due to bad sinuses and was able to resume them immediately after surgery.

    First Hike

@@kimpossible67 - That's a NSV for you and hopefully ill be a blessing for the missing individual and their family.
  3. Protein shakes are not counted as clear liquids. Clear liquids are just that, liquids you can see through. Protein shakes count as fluids. For example I actually drink 48 ounces of water a day. However I also drink a protein shake for breakfast everyday that is 20 ounces. My total fluid intake it 68 ounces a day, just slightly over the 64 ounce recommendation.

    Monday is my day!

Crystal light is probably okay but check with your doctor or nutritionist about the tea. Many times they want patient's off of caffeine. Diluted apple juice (at least 50%) might be a safer alternative.
  5. There are many variables. The surgeon's own skill level and training. It could be something as simple as whether he's a DO versus and MD. Some doctors are more conservative than others. Some have had more success with a certain technique. Because the surgery is still relatively new, some mirror the protocols they use for bypass patients. Then they also have to customize the procedure to the individual. So you have the patient's age & overall health to consider. You have look at their eating habits. Men and women may respond differently to the surgery. Does the patient have a hernia that needs to be repaired? A gallbladder that needs to be removed? What if a patient is vegetarian or pescatarian? What if the patient has diabetes or hypertension? The basic surgery is remove approximately 85% of the stomach then place them on a high Protein diet to induce ketosis and then transition to high protein regular diet. It's one of the reasons why you need to do your research when choosing a program. You need to find a program that is a good match for you and your lifestyle. Otherwise you may be setting yourself up to fail.
  6. For one thing it's a fairly new surgery. So some surgeons tend to be more conservative and mirror their recommendations based on how they treat bypass patients. Additionally there has to be some variation based on the needs of the patient, and their medical history. For example, I am a vegetarian so the recommendations my nutritionist outlines for me may be slightly different than what someone who eats meat, fish or poultry.
  7. I was the exact opposite. I loved Water more than ever before. What did get old real fast was the sweetness of the Protein shakes.
  8. Versed works because it is a dis-associative drug. We used to use it often in the ER because recovery time is quicker than with other drugs. It's like you are aware of what's going on but you don't care. I've had patient say it was like watching things happen to someone else. Remember procedures vary from one place to another. Not everyone is offered this. "Choose not to be be upset. It is your choice. " - Agreed this was a philosophy I used often in the ER. It sounds like an oversimplification but it works amazingly well. You just have to be committed to it. I decided that my surgery was going to go well and behaved accordingly.

    PROTEIN SHAKES

Can you check the label and see if it contains stevia or xylitol in it? I can't find any info on their website.

    Bandages for how long?

@@katanabutterfly - I had a visiting nurse. She said as long as it wasn't oozing to let it get air because it would help it scab faster. I kept it uncovered whenever I was home and just put on a sports bra. If I had to go out I lightly covered it so it wasn't rubbing on my clothes. I am using scarfade gel on my incisions. I tend to keloid. I had an extra tube left from when I had the shingles. It's pricey but it helps flatten the scars. I'll probably continue for a least 6 month.

    Heartburn and Diarrhea

Ask your doctor to prescribe an antiacid for the heartburn. That's important so you don;t develop ulcers. As the the loose stools. Depending on your body's reaction to whatever diet your doctor has you on, it is not uncommon to have loose stools or constipation. If you are drinking cow's milk, try switching to a non-dairy milk like soy or almond. They may help. Eventually the body will regulate itself as you move back to a normal diet.

    Exercise Routine

I didn't eat junk and was taking Water aerobics 2-3 times a week preop. Certainly not as active as hauling hay but it keep me pretty flexible. Honestly I think it helped me snap back after surgery. I was walking in recovery and walked in my house and on my street as soon as I was discharged. Once my incisions healed I resumed water aerobics. I now do water aerobics 4 -5 days a week. I also do short core strengthening workouts at home either off my DVDs, youtube or On Demand. My goal is a minimum of 30 minutes of something each day even if it's just taking a walk. Longer range goals are to add in some light weight weight lifting, either a zumba or pilates class and start biking again in the Spring.

    Shakes making me nauseous

CVS whey doesn't contain soy, Prosource NoCarb liquid protein doesn't either.

    Feeling overwhelmed....????

Talk to your doctor. You may want to change the time you take the omeprazole. It took a while for me to recognize true hunger. I was over the full liquids after a week but I just hung in there with it because I realized I was paying (via insurance) this program a lot of money to give me these instructions. I just sucked it up and did as I was told.

    Possible cancelation?

Don't worry it could have just been what's called a dirty catch. They will probably have you retested. They may provide them but take baby wipes with you and wipe before peeing in the cup. Most times the urine comes back clean and you're fine. If not they will start you on antibiotics, but it shouldn't prevent your surgery.
  16. Clarify if it's clear liquids or full liquids. Clear liquids is challenging. Full liquids include protein shakes, soups, and anything thin enough to drink. You will want to chew by week 2, but you won't be crazy hungry.

    Metamucil capsules

I didn't have a pre-op diet. I was just told to increase my protein and cut back my calories. I ate regular meals until the day before surgery. I then did all liquids until it was time to stop eating.

    First time on

Follow your doctor's order and stop the "little here and little there". It's obviously effecting your weight loss.

    Solo recovery?

I had my sister come put my trash out because it was over the 10lbs weight restriction and that was it. I arranged it so I could care for myself and my cat. I used a scoop to clean the litter box so I didn't go over the lifting restriction. Otherwise I was fine.
  20. I got dropped off early because my ride had to go to work. I chilled in the lobby for an hour then went upstairs and signed in. I sat in the waiting room about 30 minutes before they called me back. I wasn't nervous at all. Just ready for it to be over with. I said a prayer before I left the house and was fine.

    Metamucil capsules

    Pre-op? Why I was pooping like clockwork pre-op. 2 - 3 times a day easily.
  22. Yes it will get better. Are you walking? Are you taking antiacids? Try slowing down your drinking. Take one sip and wait 2 minutes. then another/wait 2 minutes. If all goes well continue on. Make sure they are really small sips. If 2 is your limit wait 20 minutes and start over again. In between try doing hand raises as if you were lifting dumb bells at the gym. It sounds like your body is having a hard time working gas out. The arm movement and walking helps. Take it slow. As your body heals it will get easier.
  23. Try dong a search on "loose skin". There's a thread here and here that discusses this at length.
  24. My doctor said that expected weight loss for VSG was 50 -60% of total body weight but that it would be a slower rate. I'm only 3½ months out but so far I am happy with the sleeve. It did the thing I need most. it somehow put into remission the other issues I had that were cause me to fail repeatedly. I had already changed my eating and was working out regularly. It's just that every time I got sick I regained the same 35 -50lbs. Since my surgery I have not had an allergy attack. I rarely went a week without one prior to surgery. I'm not sure how or why, but I'm very happy this happened.
