    Bowel movement

I was good and regular. I was sleeved on a Thursday, came home Saturday and had a BM on Monday. However my surgeon is very conservative. I was started on daily stool softners in the hospital and prescribed a 30 day run post-op. It is not uncommon for people to be constipated post-op. You should be taking the benefiber daily. Some have had to use other things; benefiber, ducolax, prune juice, fresh prunes, exlax, coffee, colace and smooth move tea to name just a few. Also make sure you are getting in as much of your fluids as possible. Try to work up to 2L( at least half should be water). It will take time, but Water helps you "go" so getting those fluids up is a good thing. So It may get to the point where you will need to use a suppository or enema.
  3. @@tfarr - That's why I asked. However I do agree you can cut back and focus on getting your Protein from food. Personally I would quit the protein bars. They are high in calories and carbs. You can get the protein they contain in other sources. Otherwise if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Just keep in touch with your nutritionist and work with her to make sure you are on track. I agree everyone's body is different. I too avoid breads, potatoes, rice, crackers. I eat probably 700 -850 calories a day. I try to keep my carbs at 50 or lower. I workout 5 -6 days a week. I have a protein shake in the morning if I am taking my 9am Water aerobics class. In part to get my protein in but also because I can't eat and workout first thing in the morning. Otherwise I get my protein from food. I do 3 meals a day and may do an afternoon snack if I need it. I've never had a stall. *knock on wood*

    Cheated postop...concerned

You've replied to a topic instead of creating a new one. I'm assuming you're using the ap so it's difficult to see how to create new post. Onto you issues. You need to talk to your nutritionist. You aren't losing because you aren't getting adequate nutrition. Your body is holding onto each calorie. It's not uncommon for people to get sick of the Protein Shakes. Most are too sickly sweet. However you still need to follow the basic bariatric rules which are: Protein first then vegetables and get in your fluids. ( at least 64 ounces per day). Not only aren't you getting enough protein, the things you are eating are full of either carbs or slider foods. One of the reasons I switched to the unflavored Protein powder was so I could add it to foods without changing the flavor. Ways to add protein to what you are eating. I recommend the unflavored protein powder. A scoop is 110 calories and 26 gms of protein. Add that to the yogurt you are eating and even mix it into the mashed potatoes you are eating and you've added 52 gms of protein. Between the protein in your yogurt and the skim milk, you'd easily hit 60 gms of protein. Things you can also try are the protein waters like Propel. This will also count towards your Fluid intake. Speaking of which, how are you doing with fluids? It's not uncommon to only 300-400 calories for those first few weeks but you really need to be trying to get as close as possible to your protein and fluid goals. That said talk to your nutritionist and make them aware of what's going on. She may have other suggestions for you.
  5. I only weight my self once a month or when I go to the doctor's. If I have had a stall I missed it. I have shown a loss every time I get weighed. I'm down 62lbs so far. I eat between 700-850 calories most days and exercise 5 days a week. I eat protein first then veg and very little rice, potatoes, bread, crackers, etc....

    Is VSG for me?

The link to my story is in my signature tag. Basically I am a vegetarian with multiple food and medicine allergies. I spent 3 years losing the same 35 - 50 lbs, getting sick and regaining. The sleeve helped alleviate my allergy triggers. The only time I had a hive outbreak since being sleeved was when I stopped taking my ZyrtecD. Before surgery I couldn't go a week without a severe hive outbreak. This is a game changer for me.
  7. Day before I was scheduled to have my IVC filter removed I was feeling vaguely flu like. I gargles took vitamin C drank tea with ginger & generally dosed myself with every home remedy I could find. I woke up the day of surgery feeling much better & had my surgery
  8. Stalls are normal and happen to everyone. It's your body readjusting to the many changes. Some say they can last a few days or even up to a month.

    Just curious...

Once in recovery just after surgery. I was sucking on ice chips, accidentally swallowed too large of a piece and got sick. Other than that not once.
  10. I really like the Isopure Naked whey. Other than making things cloudy it has no taste at all. Best of all it can be mixed with hot or cold beverages. It mixes easier with cold. When mixing with hot do not cook it. I take a small amount of warm Water and a whisk and slowly mix the powder in with a whisk. Once it is well mixed and smooth I add that to my warm beverage or Soup. I've also mixed it with yogurt and even water. No taste but it was cloudy and unpleasant to look at.

How to tell your 4 yr old?

You don't make that connection for them. You tell them so their little minds don't create imaginary issues much worse than what is actually happening. You don't tell your're fat and unable to lose weight so you have to have this surgery. Hopefully you are also setting an example with good eating habits and exercise so they never have to deal with WLS.
  12. BLERDgirl

    Is VSG for me?

Honestly it hasn't been that difficult for me. I eat pretty much the same things I ate before WLS just in smaller amounts.
  13. I would not recommend it. It's far too long in calories for a person not sleeved to maintain. Not only would I be concerned about starvation mode, I would worry that your body would not get the needed nutrients ( which is why so many of us also take supplements and vitamins), but also that eventually it would lead to a binge. There are other options: You could apply for the Affordable Healthcare. I believe currently they cover lap band and bypass surgeries. You can embark instead on a program of sensible eating and exercise. Just make sure you follow it regularly. Use one of the on line apps like Myfitnesspal or Sparkpeople to log your food and exercise. A good example of someone doing it the old fashioned way is Sweating Until Happy.
  14. There's a saying " You can't change someone's behavior, but you can change how you react to that behavior." You made the decision for you. Stop trying to convince him or change his mind. Don't let this be a constant source of arguing for you. Focus on following your program and doing well.

    Discouraged

Fruit & veggie diet? Sorry but that's crazy. I'm a vegetarian. I know for a fact you cannot lose that way. I work very hard to eat a balanced, plant based diet. I include beans, tofu and other non animal proteins. You need your protein. You don't need out help, you need to follow your program and that includes getting enough protein, exercising and getting in your fluids.

How to tell your 4 yr old?

I worked professionally as a CCLS. One of the rule we live by explain thing in the most simple way that's honest. A 4 year old doesn't need all the nitty gritty details. A simple Mommy's going to have the doctor fix her tummy will suffice. This way you can explain why you'll be gone for a day or 2 and why you can't pick him up and/or are a little sore. You can remind them that after a while you'll be much better.

    Is VSG for me?

@@David Benjamin I'm only 5mths out but I started at a pretty high weight and have been losing consistently.
  18. @@nprcowboy I realize it's frustrating but you actually sound like you are where many of us were early on post op. Instead of comparing to your wife perhaps try viewing this as your reset. Imagine you are a few weeks post op. It may be slow going but I'm crossing my fingers this is your new starting point.

    Mederma or scar cream?

It depends on the person. Most of mine were small but my drain and one other incision scar were pretty big and noticeable, not to mention the became raised and bumpy once they keloided.

    I'm debating about the sleeved

I completely agree with @CowgirlJane. I think stating that 99.9% of us are emotional eaters is a gross overstatement. I do think it an issue for many, but certainly not all. There are a myriad of reasons why someone may be morbidly obese. For me it was more a combination of disordered eating, health issues from my severe allergies and premature menopause. Whatever the reason is, you need to deal with it before WLS. The surgery is just a tool or jumping off point. Personally my goal is not to be thin. I want to be smaller and I want a BMI within normal range, but I want a strong, healthy body more than anything else.
  21. BLERDgirl

    Mederma or scar cream?

Scarfade gel. It worked on my shingles scars and has helped lessen my incision scars. I keloid so some of them were raised and bumpy. 5 months out and they are mostly flat.
  22. BLERDgirl

What is a typical day of eating for you?

I don't know. I think I eat pretty much the same way I ate pre-WLS. Beans a veggie burgers always felt pretty dense to me and they certainly are filling.
  23. BLERDgirl

    Negativity

Because she's scared. She unfortunately has had problems with her WLS and that's tainted her viewpoint. I had friends tell me never to have WLS. One person we know died from byass surgery another has problems because of the malabsorption issue. Your body is not the same as hers. even with the sleeve some have easy times of it and some don't. If you feel this is right for you, you have to push those thoughts out of your mind and move forward with taking care of you.
  24. BLERDgirl

    I'm debating about the sleeved

Surgery is a personal decision. However if as you say you are an emotional eater you may still need counseling to address those issues. You may also want to rethink your exercise plan. If car trouble derails your working out perhaps developing an at home workout plan might be a good idea. Personally speaking I am happy I had the sleeve. It has been an easy process and experience for me but not everyone has it as easy.
