1 week post op protein problems....
BLERDgirl replied to 2bullymom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's not usual to feel tired this soon after surgery. This is why it is advised to take at least 2 weeks off. Some of us bounce back quickly, others don't. There really isn't anyway to tell beforehand. Hopefully you are still taking your Vitamins and supplements. If protein powders are a challenge, focus on at least getting in your fluids. If you get dehydrated you will feel worse. Lastly keep calling your doctor's office. You need to touch base with him if you are feeling poorly. The noises will go away eventually. Some tummies just like to gurgle. You should be following your nutritionist recommended diet. If cheese and pureed Soups is on your menu then enjoy! I was having cheese and pureed soups within the first 2 weeks because it was allowed on my full liquid stage. I have yet to have a problem eating/drinking anything. I agree Genepro appears to be using some sort of pseudo science. I know it's popular, but I would personally shy away from it. -

I agree, but part of this we need to take responsibility for ourselves. Some of us for whatever reason have self esteem issues. I never felt like I wasn't cute or worthy. I was fortunate enough to have friends who liked me for me. I wasn't treated any differently than my slimmer friends. Sure I occasionally ran into people outside of my circle, and yes occasionally they were unkind. However I never tolerated ill treatment so those sorts of encounters were few and far between. I do not broadcast every event in my life so the circle of people I have told is small. My entire family has been very supportive. The one person I was worried about was my mother. To minimize any flack from her I told her literally 2 days before surgery. So whether you give a long answer, a snappy comeback or a polite answer do so apologetically. This is your life and you are responsible for making it a happy one. -
Does everyone meet their protein goal every day?

Since you know the milk & protein powder works perhaps try increasing the amount of protein powder you use. Go slow, maybe add a ¼scoop more. If it's too thick you can add ice or a bit of Water. You might want to look at meat alternatives. Some people aren't able to tolerate meat right away. One of the things I did on the full liquids stage was make a bean soup. I pureed black Beans, then thinned it out with a bit of vegetable broth. Before eating I would strain it to remove any skins or bits that hadn't pureed enough. Not only was it a nice bit of protein, it was also a welcome break from all the sweet protein shakes. If I added a dollop of plain greek yogurt, it felt a bit like sour cream and added more protein to boot. -
Face moisturizer suggestions? And dry skin in general -- lotion suggestions?
BLERDgirl replied to Elizabeth21's topic in The Gals' Room
I have to admit in the winter I am not as obsessive about sunblock as I am in the spring/ summer. I do use a foundation with SPF protection year round but in the summer I use regular sunblock either over my moisturizer if I am barefaced or instead of a moisturizer if I am wearing foundation. -
@@k9nana - Try an unflavored protein powder that can be mixed with tea or soup/broth. I use Isopure Unflavored.

Both alcohol and peroxide are no-no's. Just use warm water and a mild non perfumed soap along with the meds your PCP prescribe. Contrary to popular opinion they are actually more harmful to healing tissue. -

@@Graciesmom04 - one other suggestion when I mix Isopure with a hot beverage or soup I find it best to temper it in. What I do is take a ½tbsp of warm Water and slowly whisk in the Protein powder a little at a time. At the same time I will have the coffee/tea brewing or the soup cooking. Once the protein powder is completely mixed with the water, I turn the fire off on soup and then slowly stir the liquefied protein powder into soup. This way the protein doesn't clump and the soup remains hot. -

As did mine but as I mentioned my surgeon took them off at my one week visit that was not my decision but his as the one who did the surgery. I was also strictly instructed to not put any type of alcohol or peroxide on the skin as it breaks it down and does not promote healing. I was also swabbed for infection and it is not infection, it is not oozing nor has it ever, I have no fever, and it is not warm to the touch. My surgery was also over two weeks ago and this just started happening. And my PCP is the one I went to, did you read my original post before commenting or what? I was told the same thing about peroxide. I think it's just going through an ugly phase. Try not to worry since you don't have any other negative issues occurring. -

Make the most of what you can have. In the morning add your yogurt to the Protein shake. You've now gotten 37 grms in first thing in the morning. You can have more yogurt at lunch if that's what you can tolerate. So that's another 15 bringing your total to 52gms and it's only lunch time. At that point pretty much anything you can tolerate will get you to 60gms. I don't like to eat heavy at dinner time. A scoop of Isopure unflavored mixed into a cup of Soup satisfies me. If you could do that you'd get another 26gms of protein plus whatever protein is in the soup. That would put you at close to 80 gms by dinner. -

Just keep an eye on it and try not to worry. If it starts to feel warm to the touch or oozing yellow then call your PCP back. Otherwise just give it time to heal. -

I've never heard such a thing or seen any studies to support that. From what I've seen on the forums here I don't think that's true at all. Follow your doctor and nutritionist advice as close as possible. Remember the basic rules: Protein first, then veg and drink your Water. Exercise as soon as possible even if it's just walking for 30 mins a day. -

@@lclemur A stool softener is much gentler than a laxative. My doctor actually prescribes them for 30 days post op. I took one colace a day for the first 30 days. I had my first BM 3 days after discharge and I have been regular ever since. I also drink plenty of water. That really does help them move along. -

1200 calories 6 months out
BLERDgirl replied to mercy96's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It varies. I am 6mths and one of those who still eats between 750 - 860 every day. I work out 5 -6 days a week. It works for me. If you are still losing and your nutritionist is okay with it then don't worry about it. -

BLERDgirl replied to theshrinkingdutchess's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
It took a week or 2 post op to work up to getting in at least 60gm of protein per day, but now I get in at least 70 pretty much every day. I am 6 mths out. At first hair loss was not a problem. I take Biotin regularly. I was taking this pre-op since I am menopausal and have locs. This week I noticed my temples are a little thin. I've started back using Jamaican Black Castor oil. From what I read on the forums as long as you are getting in your protein, the hair loss should stop after a month or two. My locs are bra strap length and I'm not sure if the thinning edges are from my swimcap( I do aquafit 5 days a week), the WLS, or a combination of both. If you are a loose natural, I would recommend putting your hair in a protective style, make sure you are getting in your vitamins/supplements and protein. Hopefully the loss won't be too bad. -
Warming Up to Water Exercise
BLERDgirl replied to BaileyBariatricsExercise's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Magazine
LOVE my aquafit classes! It is my number 1 exercise. Thankfully I have no shame so putting on a bathing suit has never been an issue for me. I swear my classes are a large part of what made my surgical experience a breeze. A few tips: Krinkle suits are the best. They hold the jiggly bits in but aren't super tight. The built in bras are very supportive. They don't fade or wear thin like even the best chlorine resistant suit does. For those who want more modesty, there are also swim unitards. I'm thinking of trying one of these. A friend suggested they may provide more compression support. A good Water shoe not only makes sure you don't slip walking poolside, it also provides good support. I am currently wearing tevas. If you are walking solo it helps to have some music. I have a water proofed Apple shuffle that I love, but Amazon has several options available at different price points. -
Why wait? I was taking vitamins and supplements from the day I went home.

Make sure your medical team is aware of all medicine and supplements you are taking. They will advise you as to whether you can swallow the or if you need to find a chewable version. They will also review what may or may not need to be temporarily discontinued. Also be careful opening gel caps. Some were not meant to be taken that way and aren't as effective if you do.

How Closely Do You Stick to the Program?
BLERDgirl replied to mnmlst's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
"Sticking to the program" doesn't mean a diet in any way, shape or form. It simply refers to eating the recommended foods your nutritionist has suggested, taking your supplements and exercising. Of course most of this is a lifestyle change. I full understand this for the rest of my life. However, there is a difference in what I did pre-WLS. Before surgery I took a multi-Vitamin once a day and Biotin for my hair. I know take 2 multi's, biotin, D3, calcium citrate and B12. Before surgery I aimed for 50gms of protein a day and the only worry I had about carbs was making sure I was eating complex carbs more than I ate simple, "white" carbs. Before surgery I worked out 3 - 4 times a week, now I work out 5 - 6 times a week. It doesn't mean I don't have a piece of chocolate on occasion. I do, but I was able to implement the occasion treat into my diet prior to WLS. I don't think anyone here is discussing guilt over the occasional indulgence, but some have admitted that they aren't consistent with things like drinking enough Water, getting enough protein or taking their supplements/vitamins.
