2 Days Post Open Severe Nausea
BLERDgirl replied to ssourgirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Having worked in an ER, I can tell you this is not uncommon. She was not in any breathing distress and she wasn't bleeding or dying. Unless her doctor called ahead and told the ER to expect her, she's gonna wait. If you speak with her doctor and they say there's is nothing physically wrong with her, she's gonna have to start to help herself. That means at the very least taking the pain meds no matter how nasty they are. If she can't drink, try ice chips. Laying there doing nothing is going to make her dehydrated and ill. I realize people have different pain thresholds, and this is your baby, but she's got to help herself. -
how are approvals handled?
BLERDgirl replied to taweedeegirl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The insurance company calls the shots as to how paperwork is submitted because they are the ones paying for it. If that's what they said, then that's how it has to be done. You can talk to the 2 offices and see how they can coordinate together, but ultimately if the insurance company doesn't receive the request in the correct manner, they can deny the claim. Not all insurance program work the same. Some want the request to come from the PCP, others will allow the bariatric program to make the request. -
@@carolinacrumb88 - why did you make a separate post about essentially the same thing?

You aren't thinking rationally. You yourself have said it could be water retention because it's that time of the month. That's not a true weight gain. You lost 3 stone(42lbs) in 3 weeks! When has that ever happened? You have to realize that there will stop, starts and times when it will appear that you are gaining as your body undergoes this transformation. If this upsets you, throw away your scale and only get weighed at the doctors.

At what point do I seek out a consult?
BLERDgirl replied to Quest4TheNewMe's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
It depends on whether you plan to pay for it yourself or through insurance. Most insurance companies want at least 2 years of documented maintenance. It can be done earlier if you can document problems due to excess skin. (rash, infection, etc...). If you plan to use insurance, thoroughly check your policy before you do anything. -
It only gives an alert if you are under 1000.You can close out your day but it gives this warning. It seems to bother some people, but I just ignore it. "Based on your total calories consumed today, you are likely not eating enough For safe weight loss, the National Institutes of Health recommends no less than 1000-1200 calories for women and 1200-1500 calories for men. Even during weight loss, it's important to meet your body's basic nutrient and energy needs. Over time, not eating enough can lead to nutrient deficiencies, unpleasant side effects & other serious health problems. To safely meet your goals: Focus on consuming nutrient-rich foods and beverages Check your progress in MyFitnessPal throughout the day Add nutritious Snacks between meals as needed"

Your body already told you the answer. Give yourself time to heal.

Confused stomach and hungry!
BLERDgirl replied to carolinacrumb88's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You need to follow YOUR doctor's instructions. Are you on a PPI. You may be experience acid which often masquerades as hunger. Regardless of what anyone on here does, do not advance yourself without talking to your nutritionist or doctor first. Considering your hospital course, adding anything without your doctor's instructions does not seem like a wise choice to me. -
1. Step away from the scale. You should weigh yourself no more than once a week. Personally I only weigh myself once a month or when I go to the doctor's whichever come first. Weighing yourself everyday will make you crazy. Instead take your measurements. Neck, breast, waist and hips. Every 2 -3 months or so take your measurements again. Even when the scale does not move, comparing your measurements will show how your body is changing and adjusting. 2. Make sure you are following your program. That means getting at least 60 gms of Protein, plus your water/fluids and you are following the basic rule of protein first then veg. Also add in some form of exercise for at least 30 minute a day.

My favorite thing is to mix it with soup. You still get the protein but you don't get that sweet taste.

2 Days Post Open Severe Nausea

Call the doctor back. Tell them you think she needs to be admitted so they can run test for a blockage. If they hem and haw, ask to speak to the program chef. It sounds like the ER is treating the symptoms. You need to find out the source of the problems. I'd rather get her checked out to be on the safe side. If everything checks out then you can try tough love and explain she's going to have to help herself by trying to work through some of this pain. She needs to take the pain meds so she can start to get better. -
What's the difference? Dieting and Weight Loss Surgery....
BLERDgirl replied to lovinlora78's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
WLS is still a tool. It's a very valuable tool, but you have to work it. You cannot think it will do it all for you. There are some people who do indeed regain because they return to those same bad habits. There are others still who never deal with the mental part of it, especially those who are emotional eaters. I think those who have the most success view this as a true lifestyle change. That means not only changing your eating habits, but your views on food in general. That is a lot harder than is sounds. If you work with it WLS can truly be a life changing event. If you go into it thinking you'll get to goal and then eat whatever you want, chances are you'll regain. I would recommend calling around your area and inquiring if there are seminars available. Go, and ask questions. It may be helpful in determining if WLS is for you and what specific type of surgery would be best for you. -
Skinny people get colds too. You could try adding extra vitamin C to your routine during the winter flu season, but colds happen to everybody.

FEEL HORRIBLE EVERY MORNING
BLERDgirl replied to downsizingdiva's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Call your doctor and explain how you are feeling. You may need your meds adjusted. There is no reason to feel bad every day. -
You need to call you nutritionist back and have her walk you through this. You should have been given instructions on what to look for in a Protein powder or shake and at least an over view of what to look for in a Protein Powder. I was told at least 15 gms of protien and no more than 6 gms of sugar. I was also instructed on what Vitamins to take. Everyone's program is different. What is okay by my doctor, may not be what your doctor wants you to do. If you are unclear you need to make them explain it to you so you understand. One thing I would recommend is not buying more than 2 weeks worth of whatever protein you decided on. Sometimes your taste changes after surgery and what your thought you liked now taste absolutely disgusting. My program provides us a handbook that outlines the process from start to finish. It had recommends brands of protein as well as vitamins. I taste tested Proteins for a good 2 weeks prior to surgery before choosing the ones I used.

How can you tell with your sleeve
BLERDgirl replied to Lifeafter40's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Stomach of steel here. NOTHING I've tried has disagreed with me. However I tend to burp when I'm getting full. I also noticed I would get full with 1 - 2 bites left. Forcing those 2 more bites would leave me uncomfortably full. Like belly extremely tight. I also think that's why I had a little trouble with acid for a while. I stopped forcing those extra bites and now I'm fine. If are not yet feeling restriction, stick to the ¼ or ½ cup portion. I find for most people by the time you wait 30 mins - 1 hour and then drink Water, there's no more room to eat more anyway. -
I also keep nuts and Protein bars in the glove compartment. Another option might be deli's and supermarket salad bars.

FEEL HORRIBLE EVERY MORNING
BLERDgirl replied to downsizingdiva's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Were you an anxious person pre-op. What are you anxious about? Call your doctor. You may need something for your nerves. It's not uncommon for people to have anxiety post-op. I was put on xanax for a short period after I had my hysterectomy. The surgery and removal of internal body parts can sometimes throw your hormones out of whack. -
THIS! I think I tried/sampled 10 -15 different Proteins until I got what I liked. My current favorite is Isopure unflavored. I can mix it with anything. Water, tea, coffee, Soup, yogurt, etc.... Protein powder mixed in 0% greek yogurt is a terrific protein punch. That doesn't make any sense.

None. They are too high in sodium for me. Why not get an insulated bento instead? I used one when I did community base social services. I used to even make a miso Soup that all I had to do was buy some hot Water to add to it. Other than Dunkin Donuts coffee, fast food are a very rare occurrence for me even in small portions.

Frozen meals - lean cuisine weight watchers...
BLERDgirl replied to MamaTo3inNH's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I often add unflavored powder to my coffee. I used Isopure but others have had success with GENEPRO and unjury as well. I also add them to my Soups. Tonight I'll have a cup of progresso lentil soup. It's 9 gms of Protein, but I'll add a scoop of unflavored Isopure which is 26gm making dinner a whopping 35gms of protein. While I don't use them, I don't think there is anything wrong with keeping a few in the freezer for an emergency situation. If you do a weekly food prep, there are many Indian and even Italian dishes you can premake into ramekins. Indian cooking will be very bean heavy, and if you do Italian you could go to the seafood side. -
Exactly what we should be doing. Like you, I have a fairly active social life. Learning how to eat in those situations is key to losing and in your case maintaining an idea weight.

Yes eating breakfast makes you hungrier. If you think of your tummy as a fuel burning furnace, you are turning the furnace on by eating breakfast. The key is to plan meals that keep that fat burning furnace going at an even level. For some that means a mid morning snack, for others that meals a sensible lunch. For me personally, lunch tend to be my biggest meal. It helps with recovery from any morning workouts I may have done and holds me until dinner. As long as I plan my daily menu, eating breakfast works best for me.

1. I have no idea about the water thing. My guess is to both keep you hydrated and to aid with digestion since our diets put us into ketosis. 2. Most people have to supplement, hence the reason so many have issues with constipation. Thankfully my nutritionist has no problem with complex carbs so green leafy veg, Beans and fruit are okay for me. -
I always eat breakfast even if it's just a Protein drink. For me part of my issue was not overeating. My issue was disordered eating. I'd skip breakfast and then not bother to slow down and eat until 8 or 9pm, sometimes even later. My body held onto every calorie because it never knew when another one was coming, or whether I was in a healthy eating mood or a pizza mood. Eating breakfast jumpstarts my metabolism and yes I am hungry during the day, but at long as I provide meals at regular intervals, I don't overeat. Breakfast is rarely a big heavy meal, I make it a point to never skip it.
