  1. @@Gladys62 - Glad to see you are getting some relief. I had to laugh because you must be the first person I've meet who liked the barium. lol Once those PPI's really kick in you should be a whole lot more comfortable.

    Good hydration tracker apps?

@@This New Kim - I can't get the thing to switch modes so I can enter my weight and info, etc... I get the thing blinking and that''s it. I'm just glad I didn't pay for this because then I'd really be upset.

    Need Help

If you're already scheduled for surgery then there's just the post-op life. Walk as soon as possible. Follow your doctor's instructions on eating, drinking and getting in your Protein post op. You will likely start on on Protein drinks. You can start sampling drinks now. Buy samples were you can. There are many options; powders that you mix yourself or premixed drinks. They come flavored or unflavored. shake or Water type products. Once you decide on a brand, don't buy more than 2 weeks supply. Some people experience changes in taste buds post-op and the stuff they liked pre-op they can't stand post-op.

    really struggling

I did not mourn food. The closest I got to that was during all liquids when I got to the point where I just wanted to chew. I like to cook and I'm okay with trying recipes that have the same flavors but are more nutritious and have fewer calories. I wonder if it's because of where I was at in my journey to health when I got sleeved. I had already changed a lot about my diet by the time I decided on WLS. Having food allergies that land you in the ER or in a medical coma changes how you view food. I'm okay with eating the smaller portions on a bariatric diet. Even better now that I am sleeved I can actually have 1 cookie and be okay.

When were YOU allowed to go solid?

Because every body is different and heal times may be faster for some people. I have a tummy of steel and had no issues with any food I tried.

    Walking nauseates me

I was going to recommend the same thing. I always bookend my workout with Protein. If I'm up super early (rare) I eat scrambled eggs. Most days I make a large Protein Drink (20 -24 ounces). I can drink that before, during and after my workout. It gives me the fuel I need but isn't too heavy on my belly. It also helps keep me hydrated.
  7. @@Pwfnp -Try getting some more natural fiber in your diet. Prunes are a good choice, as it prune juice. Braggs Organic Apple cider vinegar is also helpful. Just a capful a day taken either as a shot or mixed in your water. My diet is naturally high in fiber. Some green leafy veg like spinach may help. I regular as rain. I go at least once a day.

    Pre op nerves

I haven't had as many surgeries as @@CanyonBaby, but I've had my fair share including a 4 day medically induced coma. My view is that I am relatively healthy and I've done everything to comply with the doctor's request. There is no medical reason why I wouldn't wake up. Besides I got things I wanna do! Just practice relaxing and staying focused on what you need to do. You'll be fine.

    Rough week got rougher

You can survive this. It's not fun, but totally doable. When I had my hysterectomy I had a 12cm abcess (~ 5inches) that for whatever reason the doctor lanced w/o anesthesia! I ended up getting it packed and have a nurse come out 2x's a day for wound care. Good thing you went to the ER and got checked. Just follow doctor's order and you'll be good as new.

    Unsure of what to do...

I think they are both fairly safe. I am sleeved and quite happy with it, but I've seen some really horrid tales of folks dealing with out of control acid post op. I only had a minor issue with it and have been off omeprazole since month 5. My doctor is a bit conservative. I was started on 20 mgs omeprazole day 1 in the hospital. Around 6 weeks when I switch to normal food as tolerated I noticed I was having a little issue with acid. The doctor increased my dosage to 40mgs at my 3 mth follow up. Like I said that only lasted a short while and I have been off it since month 5.

    Meat tolerance

Vegetarian here. I do a lot of eggs, greek yogurt, cheese, nuts and beans. I occasionally do tofu & edamame. I also eat whole grains like quinoa & farro. I then supplement with unflavored protein powder that can be added to soups as well as used in the protein shakes. I avg about 80 gms of protein a day.

    Appreciation for the Vets

Agreed. I'm 6½ months out. I'm learning too. I do have experience both professionally and personally (as someone with several health issues) working with medical systems, but honestly I am just trying to share and encourage.

    Water and Burping

I burp after eating and burping is also my signal that I am full. Drinking water I am fine.

    Weird Feeling Week 3

Are you on a PPI? Some of it may be acid (the burning) and some of it may be eating too fast (the stuck feeling). The denser foods especially need to be eating super slow and chewed really, really well. If you are not on something for the acid, ask your doctor to prescribe one for you. It takes a few days to get into your system, but once you are on the correct dosage you should feel relief in 4 - 5 days.

    Appreciation for the Vets

That was nice of you to say. I certainly don't come here to fight. I try to share info and be encouraging.
  16. I agree eat super slow. Each meal should take at least 30 minutes. Try it. It's a lot harder than it sounds.

    Help with daily goals

You are doing well for just recently having had surgery. It takes a minute to build up to hitting 60gm protein/64 ounces of fluids. Just keep at it. As for Protein powders, I liked adding FAGE 0% greek yogurt to my mix to give it a nice protein boost. For inexpensive protein powder CVS makes a whey isolate in vanilla and chocolate flavors. The vanilla provides a nice blank canvas to add other flavors to. I would be careful not to use too much fruit since it carries a lots of natural sugar. Perhaps only add fruit a few time a week. I also add a tbsp of almond butter to my drinks occasionally. It takes a lot of trial and error to find a protein shake you like, so don't get discouraged if you dislike the first few you try. I mostly prefer to use Isopure unflavored because I can also add it to hot beverages like soup.

    Good hydration tracker apps?

I feel like a dunce because have a hydracoach that I have never used because I can't for the life of me figure out how to set the darn thing. I have a Water bottle with the markers on the side and just use that.

    Ladies! Pain Levels post-op

Pain was minimal for me. It felt like I had done 100 sit ups the day before and my abs were sore. I didn't require any additional pain medicine once I woke up in recovery and thankfully had no issues with gas or cramping.
  21. Sorry I have not experienced this, but I hope you get some answers.
  22. You still sound unconvinced that eating an Italian ice because you are not hungry is a good idea. It's not, I can assure you. Drinking one Protein shake a day even if you don't feel like it isn't going to cause you to gain weight or retain weight. Your body needs nutrition. Call your nutritionist and talk to them about this. I really don't think there is anything else anyone can say that hasn't already been said. If it is a matter of not liking the options presented on the full liquid stage, then talk to them about advancing to purees.

    I'm Having a Breakdown

I never had an emotional surge post-op. I have to wonder if it's because of my premature menopause. I am sorry to hear how rough some of you all have it.
  24. It's not unusual to go through a period of no appetite and for many of us that full liquid stage isn't much of an incentive to eat or drink. Our tummy's are still healing and the interest just may not be there. However, you need Protein to heal. You need fluids to prevent dehydration. The Vitamins and supplements we take can do but so much. Unless you have some other complications that prevent you you from drinking, you need to push through this period. I too was given the minimum goal of 60gm protein/64 ounces Fluid. It took me a few weeks to work up to that and I assure you that by week 2 of full liquids I wanted to throw them all out the window. Now is not the time to try and listen you your body. Yes you need to work on getting more protein and fluids in. If you are still unsure, call your nutritionist and tell her how you are feeling and what you are eating/drinking. I'm sure she will tell you to try and get more in as well.
  25. I would ask what their long term plans are for you. Do thy plan to have you on blood thinners indefinitely? Also ask if increased exercise would help you. Sorry you are uncomfortable now, but once you are up to it I would want to have a discussion about long term prevention.
