  1. I've made appointments for two consultations-one with Dr. Schwack at NYU, and one with a nurse practitioner at NYP/Columbia. I have to say, the phone call with the Columbia receptionist put a bad taste in my mouth. She was really obnoxious and made me feel bad. Obviously that shouldn't have any bearing on my decision, so I wanted to ask…..can anyone speak to NYU vs Columbia? If you chose one over the other, what guided your choice? What was your consultation and pre-op experience like? If you already had surgery, what was that like? Post-op? Did you feel supported by your surgeon? Did they answer your questions adequately? (I have to say, I'm an NYU alum and I feel like I'd be betraying my school if I went to Columbia ) Thanks all!

    Fitbit

Does anyone have a Fitbit? I was considering buying myself a pre-surgery present as I start on my journey towards becoming healthy, strong and fit. I was wondering if anyone had one and what they thought of it. I do gentle yoga and walk, but I'm going to increase my walking and join a gym. I'd love to hear input on the Fitbit, because I think it could be a really great tool to track activity, calories, food, etc. (I think the app does all that, anyway!) Thoughts?
  5. I take a few medications for depression and anxiety, and was wondering if they would need to be crushed, post-op, or if I'll be able to swallow them. One of them is a capsule and can't be crushed. Does anyone know how I would deal with this? Thanks!
  6. I was wondering what everyone's experience with pain after the surgery was? Did they send you home on painkillers? I'm a little nervous.

    ALMOST

Congrats! How long did it take you to get there?
  9. Hi all, I was wondering how everyone was setting their ultimate goal weight? Is it based on a historic weight that you were comfortable at? Did your surgeon decide? Are you just setting a general number and then seeing where your weight settles? My surgeon didn't set a goal weight for me. I'm 5'4 and decided on 135, because historically, I've always fallen been the most comfortable between 130-145 and a size 6-8. I'm worried that I'm setting myself up for disappointment if I can't reach that. What are everyone else's thoughts? Thanks! J
  10. Hi all! I'm a little technologically impaired-how do you create a ticker for your weight on your profile? Thanks! :-)

    Goal Weight

When was that? You might be surprised with vanity sizing what size you might wear at the same weight now! We never had size 0 00 and 000 back in my day LoL! They were size 2 4 and 6. So that would make a current 4 maybe a 10! Things have really changedn That's very true. I think it also depends on your bone structure. I'm small-boned, so I'd be a larger size at say, 145-150 and 5'4 than someone with a large bone structure.

    Taking pills post-op

My antidepressant will be crushed for the first week after surgery. If one is a capsule you can open the capsule and eat the powder inside. Probably tastes vile though. Either way, be sure to ask you surgeon and pcp- many meds that are time released cannot be crushed, but there might be another alternative like a different medicine for a little while or liquid version I definitely will ask. I'm really crossing my fingers that I won't have to, because I take quite a few medications and that will be a pain in the neck!

    Taking pills post-op

Oh, that's awesome to hear! I hope that's the case with me-it will make my life so much easier!
  14. Scratch that, I figured it out!
  15. @@notforthefaint, I haven't gotten an email-would you mind re-sending? Thank you
  16. Hi all! I am set to be sleeved on September 18th. I'm so excited and nervous! I was wondering what I could expect, weight-loss wise. My surgeon said at about 6 months out, I would be down roughly 80 pounds, but I wanted to get a snapshot of what other people's experiences have been. For reference. I'm, 33, F, 5'4 and my starting weight is 265. Thanks, everyone! :-)

    Weight loss at 6 months?

Thanks everyone! I know that each person's rate of weight loss is individual, I just wanted to get a general idea. :-)

    Surgery in September

Hi! I'm from NYC and scheduled to be sleeved on 9/18.....in so nervous/excited, I don't know how I'm going to get through this month!
  20. Hi all! I found out today that I will be sleeved on 9/18. I'm so nervous and excited. I was wondering-for all of you that have had the procedure already.....what advice do you wish you had been given pre-op? Any/all advice is welcome
  21. Hi all! I'm meeting with the dr who I hope will become my surgeon, along with the nutritionist, on August 18th. I don't have any health conditions, so insurance won't cover and I will be paying for the surgery out of pocket. In that case, how long does it take between consultation and surgery date? What will it take for me to be approved? What kind of things will I need to do/tests will I need to have? A lot of people of mentioned a pre-op diet-how long are you usually on that? For reference, I'm 5'4, 257 pounds, 33 years old. Thanks everyone!!!
  22. I'm hoping to do bypass. I have a lot of acid reflux issues, so I think that would be the best choice for me. I'm going to wait and see what the surgeon says, though.
  23. Crossing my fingers for you, ndmiller!!! I am hoping for the beginning of October, but I don't know if that is too good to be true. My consultation is on August 18th.
  24. Thanks everyone! I appreciate the info! I'll keep you posted…..
  25. Hello all :-) In deciding which WLS surgery to pursue, I'm trying to get an idea of the pros and cons of each. I understand that the meal plan immediately following RNY is pretty limited, butI was wondering what your eating looks like a year or two down the road? After the losing phase, are you able to eat a relatively normal, moderate, healthy diet? Or are you still pretty limited? Is food something that you can actually enjoy, or is it really just something that you eat for nutrients and fuel? After all is said and done, do you feel happy with your decision to have the surgery?
