  1. I'm still pre-surgery, but here is what I'm afraid of if I don't have the surgery - the amount of over eating I am capable of. It wasn't unusual for me to sit and have 4 bowls of Cereal in a row, or 1 pint of ice cream, or 2 bags of potato chips, or 6 pieces of toast with butter, or 6 pieces of fish and chips with lots of tartar sauce and a medium, or a pound of raw almonds, or a huge chicken teriyaki with probably 2 cups of rice. Now keep in mind I typically wouldn't eat all day at work, and then come home and over eat. And all that food really didn't cause me to gain weight too much - I just stayed around my 250-256lb mark. I would try occasionally to cut back, but didn't for long. Tried Weight Watchers, Atkins, Phen/Phen, HCH (?) shots, and for the last 22 years since having my son I have always been over 200. (most I lost was on the Phen/Phen - good think I didn't die I guess). That was just before they outlawed it, and since then it was a steady climb back up to 228 - 236 - 242 - 249, etc until for the last couple of years I've been at 250+. I'm just saying that I know I need help controlling the amount of food I eat so surgery is it for me. If I can eat like I was and only gain very slowly, then I imagine eating better and much less will make the weight drop off. Don't wait like me to be 58 and doing this - do it now :)

  2. What I have learned from this topic:
    1) Buy a gun and ammo
    2) Better yet, learn how to shoot one
    3) Study the neighbors striped raccoon-y looking cat carefully now, so as not to think its a raccoon (anyone ever eaten raccoon?)
    4) Buy and store jerkey in massive quantities to barter with.
    5) Tear up a sheet and with a big fat sharpie, write "Don't Shoot! Fellow Sleever!" (because we can band together and win the apocalypse)
    6) Get an ID tag and have it engraved: "You just shot a member of the SLEEVER gang! Head for the hills!"

    7) Have the back of the tag engraved: "Anything you stick down my throat must be less than ___ inches long" (anyone know the length of an esophagus?)
    8) Consider moving next door to Miss Mac :)

  3. I asked my surgeon what if there was some kind of major disaster and there was no Protein around (lol) and he saidat least I wouldn't feel hungry ;) He was kidding, but he didn't really answer either.

Do any of you have stores of Vitamins or protein in some kind of "what if" box in a bunker somewhere :)? I rarelyever thought (much less planned for) a natural disaster, but this has me wondering! I'd hate to waste away or become really malnourished if something (think earthquake in Seattle) were to happen.

Also, do any of you wear a medical ID tag of any kind stating you have had bariatric surgery? Like what if they had to pump your stomach or suction it out or something? Could lasting harm be done to our little stomachs?

  4. I just turned 58 and although I'm not scheduled for surgery yet, I imagine it will be mid December sometime. I thought the same things - I get around "ok", still can do most things, not too interested in attracting men at this point in life (been married twice), have friends, etc, but I also have high blood pressure, sleep apnea, slightly elevated blood glucose, and my hips are killing me. Also, I hate to say it, but I think I'm treated differently at work because of my weight...it's a sublte thing, but I'll be curious to see how work goes after surgery. It's as if I am an unseen component in the room, in a mostly male company. I still think 58 is too darn young to just resign myself to my current status quo!

  5. struggling with all the Water intake from that vantage point? I realize over the past several years I've probably never drank sufficient water and wonder how much having a bit of an incontinence problem had to do with that...i.e. if I don't drink I won't have to feel like I have to go to the bathroom all the time or risk leaking..sigh. I am pursuing treatment with a urologist, but even now, trying to push my fluids before surgery, I'm wondering how in the heck am I EVER going to survive. I'll have to wear double Depends or something!! (right now I make it through the day with just a pad, but I'm buying stock in Depends :)

  6. I haven't had surgery yet, but I wonder this myself. Right now I'm chewing 30-40 times before swallowing just to practice, but I wonder more "what does eating slow" mean? I can "read" it, but it's hard to imagine. Does it mean eat one tiny bite, stop, and then wait how long? 5 mins? 10 mins? 1 min? Best of luck to you Allliecortia! I know you will find the way.

  7. Just started to try a few samples my clinics office gave me. They are all Syntrax nectar. The good so far: Fuzzy Navel (waaay good), Cappucino, and vanilla Bean Torte. The only other one I tried was Cookies and Cream and that I did not like at all. My nutritionist suggested mixing them with almond milk. They shake up and blend really well in the hand shaker thing with the wire ball inside.

    Thant's all I know so far :)

  8. Again, fairly new here, but I sense a couple of trends and have a question. I hear some people state they just can't get food down, and I can "imagine" that because your stomach has gone through a major reduction and takes time to heal and adjust. But the other scenario, where people mention that the taste of certain foods that they used to love just isn't there anymore. What would change the way you perceive the taste of foods? Is it more the texture and the thought of swallowing something with a certain consistency? Or is it really the actual taste? Me confused!

  9. Hi Risky Girl,

I'm very new here also, but have been doing a lot of reading recently - have not had surgery yet. My surgeon recommended the gastric sleeve to me. He said he would not recommend the lap band, as he has had to take more out lately than he would like. It seems that even those with lots of extra weight do get the lap band and have great luck though. My thoughts were: 1) Go with what the surgeon recommended 2) I didn't really want the maintenance of a lap band (going in for fills) 3) I wanted a reduced risk of dumping syndrome which I think is more common with the lap band? 4) I wanted to aim for a longer term solution than the lap band might offer 5) I did not like the idea of re-routing my small intestine - just personally seemed too much fiddling around with my insides! 6) A guy at work just had the gastric sleeve and he is thrilled with the results.....Those are just some of the reasons, but I'm sure you'll find many more as you read.

    Best,

    Janet

  10. Hi all,

I'm in the north Seattle area, and although I'm not much of a group oriented person, I love a good talk and chuckle :) Since the last post was in October should I assume the group is still getting together? Bothell isn't too far and I'd love to meet up. I haven't had surgery yet, but will in late December/early January. I'm 58, but young at heart (hehe).

  11. Hi Everyone - New here as well, this my first post. I tend to be rather private with sharing, but once I loosen up, I'm an open book :)

I'm 58 and so hope to participate in the over 50's forum as I'm thinking most of you will relate to how much one can love the fifties. So much becomes less important (looks, men to some extent (hah), belongings, what others think) and some things become clearly more important (health, relationships with those you love, peace of mind, appreciation of the most simple things).

I have not yet had surgery, but am scheduled for my final review next week, then submittal to insurance, and hope to get in for surgery just prior to Christmas, or just after.

Will keep you all in my thoughts, and look forward to "easing" into chatting with you all. I've learned a lot already from the posts, and will have many questions.

    Anyway, best to all!
