Anyone have trouble with med absorbtion?

I had that problem with absorption of medication. We (my PCP, my pharmacist, and myself) had a sit down together to try and figure out why. I had also begun to break apart my meds and I still wasn't absorbing them. They couldn't understand what was happening and why my medicines weren't having the desired effect. So I (being a nurse) went to the medical journals to see if this was an issue. I found several articles about this happening. After telling them, they did some research and found out that some meds will just not have time to break down in the stomach before passing through. The pharmacist specifically noted that "coated" and time release medication is designed to start breaking down with stomach acids and takes quite a while for the process to happen. He said they don't sit in our stomachs long enough for that to happen. Capsules and easily broken down meds are usually not a problem. Also meds that are meant to be absorbed in the intestines are acceptable. He told me that any meds prescribed need to be chewable, liquid, non coated, or made to absorb in intestines from now on. I hope this helps. It took us a while but we got it all straight and now they both know for future patients!

    Hi all. Starting my journey.

Congratulations on your decision! You will go through many different emotions throughout the pre-op process as well as the post-op process. Just stay strong and keep focused on the end result. Best of luck to you throughout it all!

Starting back to school. NERVOUS. Encouragement? Advice?

I totally did this. I went to college at age 38, so I know how you feel. I had to take all the placement tests and I was scared to death since I hadn't been in school for 20 years. I bought a book that helped me brush up on some of the info that would be on the tests. I thought I would pass out on my first day of class! But you know what, I wasn't the only "older" student in there and I survived! It is way more intimidating in your head than it really is. Once you get started and get into the groove, you will be finished before you know it and relieved. Best of luck to you and remember, you can do it!

    really struggling

Stay positive and as the NSVs add up, you forget how much you miss certain foods. I do miss my old go to's from the past but as I lose weight and have victories, I realize exactly why I gave them up. Hormones are a big factor here too. As you are losing fat, hormones are released. It can make us irritable, mad, sad, or just plain hard to be around! This is a hard stage to get through but you will! Keep your head up and stick to your plan, it's worth it!

@B Autumn I had a hard time with vitamins too! I was taking the Flintstones chewables but now I am taking the VitaFusion Multivites gummies. They have a decent taste and don't nauseate me!

Glad to hear so many are doing well. I am in "stallsville" and it quite literally stinks! But it will pass and all will be fine. My hair loss has slowed down, thank God. I thought it would all fall out. Other than that, It is going great and I am happy and getting healthier! November 16, 2014

    Water revolting anyone else?

It is pretty common from what I have seen posted on here. I couldn't stand the taste of water for almost 2 months after my surgery and I loved drinking it before. I added little flavor enhancers to it and it helped. I also drank no sugar added juice and added water to it. Teas are also great. It does usually go away. So keep trying water by itself and one day, it tastes okay again!

    Stomach Noises

Lol, mine is soooooo loud and it embarrasses me at the worst times. We nicknamed my little beast the "angry chihuahua" because it sounds like it's always growling (and it's small now!)

    heart burn 3.5 months out

I have a separate gastric doc and he said I will probably be on them at least a year, possibly longer. He said our smaller tummy stills produces quite a bit of acid. I did have heartburn/GERD issues prior to surgery though.
  16. We used Skype the whole time I was there. I just connected to wifi on my phone or computer and talked to my family with Skype. And I did leave my phone on airplane mode the whole time I was in Mexico. I have Verizon and as soon as we crossed the border, I got a text saying I was roaming internationally. I turned it to airplane mode then.
  17. NSV today!!! They used a "normal" adult blood pressure cuff today at the doctor's office! First time since I was 20!

I know! To most it probably seems like nothing but to me, I was so happy! I even asked the nurse, "Is that a regular BP cuff?" She looked at me like I had two heads or something. It made my day though! Ahhhhh, the little things indeed. :)

    Hi! Starting the process

Welcome!!! It is a tough journey (which I'm sure your WLS friend told you) but to me, it has been worth it. Even the rougher times seem like nothing now. Just stick to your plan and keep your head up. And I definitely know what you mean about putting your weight down in writing. I would NEVER have told anyone I knew, much less didn't know, how much I weighed. It seems like this site is a "safe" zone. You can say it and know that everyone else on here won't judge you. That's what I love about BP. Best of luck to you!!

No weight loss 5 days posts op

You are not doing anything wrong, it's completely normal! They pumped your abdomen full of gas for the surgery and you most likely had an IV. It will take a little time for that to go away. And depending on your weight lost prior to surgery, your body could be holding onto all calories. Be patient, the scale will move! Best of luck to you!

    Thunder thighs.

@@Bobby46 I am in the same boat. My waist and butt are small but my thighs and calves are still big. All of my pants are tight in the legs and gaping in the waist. I feel like I am mooning the world all of the time!
