  1. Interesting to see the different responses here. I think a stall is when there is no weight loss after 2 weeks (especially for women who may have hormonal changes).

    Horrible eating over Christmas

So glad to hear I wasn't the only one! I was actually a bit surprised as I am only 5 weeks out. However, I did not lose my hunger at all from the surgery. I had son home from Navy and daughter from college so house was filled with bad stuff. The worse part is that I have NO trouble eating bad stuff! I chew the Cookies so well they just slide right down! This is very concerning as I went from being the perfect "model" WLS patient right back to my old self with the exception that I could not eat as much. Not sure how to stop this from happening again. Any ideas?
  3. @@Sharon1964 I know insurance pays. My issue is physicians ordering tests which are really not necessary. For example, I don't believe that every person getting WLS requires an EGD yet some surgeons require it for every patient. I personally would not go to that doctor. This may not be an issue for some people, however, I believe that there should be a good reason to do any type of test that, not only for cost reasons (somebody is paying for it), but also for safety reasons as there is an element of risk in these procedures.

    Christmas Day Update

Congratulations on the weight loss! I bought Tylenol liquid and while it didn't taste very good, worked well for the post op pain.

    Aetna question

It sounds perfectly reasonable to me. Records from doctor's visits also helps.
  6. Wow, this really puts a whole other perspective on this. Keep your chin up! You can do this. Don't let these people ruin your life! Also, since your insurance cover the procedure, they might cover a nutritionist visit. This might be a real help. Good Luck!
  7. Well, there is nothing you can do about the past-- it's over. So plan your attack. Here's some ideas: 1) Plan your meals the day before 2) Have a long talk with your family members- they are sabotaging you. 3) Make an appointment with dietitian and insist that the cook/food shopper attend Good luck-- don't let them ruin your journey to weight loss and good health!
  8. Thanks for the post. I too still have hunger-- I was hoping it would go away but it hasn't. That being said- it is not anything like it was. I also found out that chocolate goes down easy so I got small bars of dark (70% cocao) chocolate which are very filling and good for you! I try to have a serving every day and it makes me feel normal!
  9. My surgeon didn't require either and frankly I would have switched doctors if he did. Unless there is a reason to do one (there have been several listed on this thread and I know there are other reasons also), I personally don't believe in tests "just because." IMO they jack up costs without added benefit.
  10. Greek yogurt might be an option and the unjury chicken broth is quite good. Hope this helps.

    8 weeks Post Op.....soooo Happy!

    Great news! Congratulations!

    I am 4 days post-op

Greetings, Don't worry-- when this surgery is done there is quite a bt swelling after so it is really difficult to get in all the liquid needed. Have you been taking in any Protein? You may want to start taking some Protein shakes, even if the quantity is small. The incisional pain is normal. If your incision gets red, warm, starts oozing, etc. then you want to call the doctor. Otherwise it will get better with time. Good luck!
  14. Concentrate on the water or other fluids first. It is way more important not to get dehydrated than it is to get protein. I used a medicine cup my first few days at home and that made all the difference. I drank each ounce slowly, I found I could drink up to 4 ounces an hour that way which was great. You can also use sugar free jello or greek yogurt which has more protein. Goodluck.

    POST OFF PAIN....HELP!

Definitely normal. I had the same pain 2 weeks after my surgery. Surgeon told me it was normal since I was moving more and the amount of work that was done through that incision. If the pain increases or you notice signs of infection than call the doctor.

    Pre op diet day 1

Hope you are feeling better. Are you able to keep down clear liquids? If the nausea persists you may have an intolerance to the ingredients in the protein shakes. Maybe try another brand or formula. Good luck
  17. Congratulations on your weight loss! I was sleeved on 11/19. I just had my dietitian visit today and she told me that average weight loss the first 4 months was 40 % of the EXCESS body weight. So if you had 100 pounds to lose than 40 obs in 4 months would be average. That being said, I want to emphasize like others on this thread that each person is individual and not to expect specific numbers.

    pre op gains? HELP!

I feel your pain! I would recommend you analyze why this is happening. My doctor group emphasized learning good habits, not weight loss. However, gaining 15 pounds tells me that you either have a medical condition that needs to be addressed or that you are seriously overeating. Insurance may not approve and there is a good chance your doctor won't approve you for surgery either. That being said, you are only in month 2, this can be turned around. Look at what you want to achieve and why. Is food more important than your goals? In my family there is a strong history of diabetes nad heart disease. I knew that I was playing with a time bomb and that if I did not do something, I would most likely have serious health issues. I want to have a healthy life and feel good. Keeping that goal in mind helped me through the pre-op period and through the surgery. I am down almost 50 pounds and so glad that I took this step. Good luck and get with it! It will be worth the hard work.
  19. Rooting for you! Hang in there. Best of luck!

Check in: Week of Nov 17th Sleevers!

Greetings! So it has been a month since we all had our surgery. How is everyone doing? I am been very fortunate. No problems so far. Have just started to expand my diet and am able to eat small amounts of meat and vegetables. Weight loss has slowed down but still moving in the right direction so I am happy. I have discovered one thing that has me a bit nervous. My daughter brought home some home-made Cookies and I had one and discovered that I could easily tolerate and had a few more with no problem. I am not a big sweet fan but that got me concerned. Plan to avoid that bag of cookies since it goes down so easy! Hope all are well and having a great holiday season! Surgery date 11/19 Preop diet weight: 299 Day of Surgery): 272 Today's weight: 251 Total weight loss: 48 pounds

    Started purée diet today. Help!

I scramble my eggs in a little bit of oil. The eggs are moist and that little bit of oil helps the "plumbing"!

    Plateaus

I think many people get upset at stalls because of what used to happen with dieting. At least for me, I would plateau, get discouraged, start eating more, and the weight would start to come back. This is a new paradigm though. Yes, the stalls happen, however, they will be temporary and the weight loss will continue. If for some reason the plateau lingers, you have a dietitian to help you out! I would suggest keeping a food, Fluid, and activity log. If the plateau does not improve within a few weeks you can call the dietitian. Having the log will help him/her work with you to get the weight loss going. Good luck.
  23. It is extremely rare that open is safer than laparascopic. In fact, it is the standard of practice to perform this surgery as a laparascopic procedure with the understanding that in rare circumstances, the surgeon may have to perform it as an open procedure. Please ask your surgeon exactly what he meant when you call on Monday- or you can send an email which might be easier. Good Luck!

    Beating the Pain Game

Great post! The only thing I would like to add is that if pain is due to gas, which is quite common after laparascopic procedures, the pain medication won't really help. Walking, however, will do wonders.

    Sleeved December 2

Yes it is! I used a medicine cup that holds one ounce and slowly sipped from it. This made it very doable so I wouldn't get dehydrated. As the swelling goes down it gets easier.
