  1. All the same I'd hate to be a real chocoholic or ice cream addict. But geez, sweet tooth? Who doesnt have a sweet tooth, lol. And I thought the whole point of the band was a normal and varied diet in modest portions? I honestly dont see the point of getting a band only to live a life on some crackpot diet or denying yourself everything.

What Foods Have Caused You to PB?

I wonder whether it will be foods that give me trouble now - I cant eat bananas, hard boiled eggs or McDonalds burgers without getting that huge golf ball in my chest feeling. They always do it to me! I bet you anything I wont be able to eat those foods once I'm banded.

    Cancel banding because of Migraines?

I would look at it as you can just as easily pick up any other kind of illness or gastro that will cause vomiting. YOu could get food poisoning any day of the week. Even though migraine medications arent working for you, cant you take an anti nausea medication or get a shot when a migraine comes on? How horribly frustrating, I know how you feel, I'm miserable at home today (and have been all this week) with an ulcerated right cornea, so I cant drive or see properly. I've seen a surgeon about excimer laser treatment to cure this recurrent problem, he'd formerly told me to just wait and see but I'm over suddenly waking up without warning with my eyes not functioning. I rang the office and they fit me on the very next list, yep 9 December, the day of my lap band operation. I've elected to wait until January and February next year to get each eye done, but I'm hoping against hope my blasted eyes just behave till the ops over and done.

    Problem with bread?

I find I like bread and particularly sandwiches toasted anyway. I hate regular sandwiches, I'd starve to death before I ate one voluntarily but I'm really hoping toasted sandwiches, toasted wraps and crispbreads are still possible.

    Who works out at home?

If I were allowed to use a treadmill with my ankle, I would buy one. But I'm not. I've been using the Leslie Sansone ones with a rebounder, that way you can make it all double the effort and really high energy, because I find on their own, they're not a challenge to me. I've also purchased a few spinervals DVD's and we've now hired a spinning bike, so I'm doing spinning classes at home. I want to purchase a couple of good barbell workouts, something in the style of Body Pump, and at night in front of the telly I'm doing core strength/abdominal work, nothing particular just stuff I make up and lots of stretching.
  6. And what do you do? I've discovered soooo many wonderful fitness DVD's, it really is possible to ahve an entire gym quality workout at home. I'm building up a bit of a collection and working out a few rotations for myself including aerobic work, strenght worth and a lot of core strenght and flexibility stuff. I like hard core aerobics, none of this dancy fancy wussy stuff - but you can get fantastic spinning DVD's and this think called cardio coach which you can use on the elliptical, treadmill, whatever you have, it's basically interval training.

    Surgery Monday - HELP!!!

I suspect mine is due about the day of surgery too! This has happened to me before, although I was getting wisdom teeth out so nobody was fiddling around down the other end, but they gave me very sexy paper undies and something that could have passed as a loaf of bread for a pad. I'd go in with a pad, not a tampon, if someone is going to take things like that off my body, I'd rather it was quicker and easier, I mean I know my obstetrician has seem more of me than I ever will but at least I'm conscious and know I'm being treated with respect kwim? And its only ever been him and the midwife, not a full theatre of staff.

Way OT: I just have to vent here

Oooh yuck. Good table manners seem to be a rare thing these days.
  9. I also try to never do too much of the one thing. I tend to get fads on things so I'll go to the gym every day for five weeks, get an injury and then not go again for six months kind of thing. I try to do something a little bit different every day and that keeps me motivated, and I think its better for your fitness to cross train too.

    Who works out at home?

I'm lucky (?, perhaps that's not the right word) to be at home with a 2 year old. So I can make the time for it. I've kind of fallen on it because I'm supposed to be doing lots of swimming to keep weight off my ankle, that I DONT have time for. It takes me about 40 minutes to swim 1km (20 laps of the pool), plus the drive to and from the pool, plus the showering/getting changed etc. And I dont spend $150 getting my hair coloured nad highlighted just to wash it off in the chlorine! I find I can fit this in, Eliza will watch a DVD on the computer and I dont have to worry about more childcare for her.

What exactly does restriction feel like?

Yeah, I want to know too. I think I can imagine, Parvathi once told me I was on the right track so........ when I was pregnant with Eliza I'd sit down to eat my dinner, eat 3 or 4 mouthfuls and feel stuffed full. I could feel it backing up my oesophagus. When I pushed it to eat some more, I'd be sick. Not horrendous nauseous vomiting, more regurgitation. When it stayed down whatever I ate sat for hours, and I felt stuffed full for quite a long time. I could relieve it a bit by standing up and walking round, moving the baby a bit to make room for it to go down. I lost a ton of weight. Is that what it's like, kinda?

How soon can I have a glass of wine?

My doctors information said moderation - but that moderate wine consumption (as opposed to beer, spirits) has health benefits, something that's reasonably well known these days. And red wine is full of antioxidants! Normally, just out of surgery, or just pregnant, or unwell, any time when you really shouldnt drink alcohol you probably cant face the thought of it anyway. I figure by the time it seems attractive to you again, you're probably right to handle a small amount (well maybe not if you're pregnant!).

    Do you weigh...

On the contrary, I tend to weigh myself last thing at night, still fully clothed. That way I know it cant get any worse, lol.

    Ring and shoe size change?

My shoe size hasnt changed at all on the way up, nor through 3 pregnancies so I doubt it'll change on the way down - but I have recently had to get orthotics and now I cant wear any shoes except my running shoes :-( - I need all new shoes. I've had my rings resized larger twice over the past 10 years so no doubt they will need to go down again over time.

    Banded Students?

I could have been banded already, but had to time it for after 2nd semester finished, I had exams last week. This last semester has been a disaster anyway, I've been so distracted by my eye problems - I've got some weirdo condition called map dot fingerprint dystrophy that hit me this year, its genetic and causes constant tearing of the corneas when you open your eyes after sleeping, I've had a few major attacks which have put both eyes out of action for several days at a time - I cant really use the good eye when one is bad, because it makes both eyes move and it hurts. And of course, the reason I'm getting the band is mainly my bad ankle - which is a chronic fallen arch/achilles tendonitis/bursitis problem and that's taken loads and loads of time for physio/sportsmedicine/podiatry. And I have 3 kids - the two boys are older and fine but Eliza is typical 2 year old feral at the moment and study has been very very difficult. So I didnt need abdominal surgery on top of that. But anyway, four glorious months off over the Australian summer, plenty of time to get banded, recover, and lose a ton of weight. I'm doing a Bachelor of Primary education - grade school teacher to you I think. Long slog, I'm part time at the moment because with a young family I cant cope with anymore. I wanted to go full time from next year, but my youngest is just too demanding still.

    soft diet help please

My doc told me to treat it just like feeding a baby and that there is no need to eat loads of sweet yogurt, puddings etc, but that you can eat normal food in puree form, so that probably excludes bread, pancakes and the like. Suggested menu for a day, for exampe is: Breakfast 1/2 a weebix, mushed up with milk (build up to 2 weetbix over a few weeks) Mid morning 1/2 cup pureed fruit lunch 1/2 cup pureed meal - meat/fish, vegetables and a mushy veg like pumpkin, sweet potato to get it to the right consistency Afternoon 1/2 tub low fat yogurt dinner same as lunch So nutrient wise you should be getting pretty much the same mix of fruit/veg and carbs and Proteins that you would have on an ordinary diet, just mushed up and with a bit less variety. And as with a baby, when you transition onto solids, make the purees chunkier and chunkier. I'm just going to do what I did with my kids, cook up a variety of meals thinks like lamb shank casserole, veges and mashed potato, freeze in single size portions and eat as required.

When Can I Get On The Tredmill?

Just out of interest on this topic, I just bought this to use on the elliptical machine at the gym, so I dont fall asleep and actually fall off the machine; http://www.cardiocoach.com/home.php It is absolutely awesome! Really motivating and makes it FUN. I love the treadmill but cant use it because it aggravates may achilles tendon.

    BreakFast Ideas

My fave Breakfast is a yummy home made meusli with vanilla yogurt and fresh berries. I hope that still goes down well after I have the band - even if I have to adjust the yogurt/meusli ratio. I also often make smoothies, with berries, milk, yogurt and a weetbix and some Protein powder (weetbix are just wheat flake Cereal in a little rectangle). Multigrain toast and marmalade (sometimes with lots of butter, tsk tsk) pancakes on the weekend. Breakie tends to be a carb meal for me, I dont really eat bread or carbs much at lunch or dinner, unless we have Pasta. If I dont eat carbs at breakfast, I'm lightheaded later in the morning and I can guarantee I'll have a huge carb binge in the afternoon - bread, muffins, Cookies, whatever I can get my hands on.

    Big Breast Anyone

I'm a good 35 kg heavier than I was 12 years ago when I married and I recall buying a bustier for under my wedding dress that was a 16D (and I think I had one 16C bra at that time that I wore too), I think that's about a 36-38D in your sizes. I've gone up to a 42 DD so although my norks look ginormous, a great big unsexy matronly shelf, they've actually not increased in size that much. But over that time I've breastfed 3 children for a total of 6 years so who knows what they'll look like at the end? Footy socks with tennis balls in the end is my bet.

    Regret and depressed

Its not unusual to be highly emotional after surgery anyway - I know all I do for a week after a general anaesthetic is bawl my eyes out at the drop of a hat. Give yourself some time, what you are feeling is what I was initially most afraid of and what really made me decide for a while not to have the band. It seemed so final. But really, you now have an amazing tool to use to help you become what you want. YOu just need to give your head a bit of time to get round that fact. Its EXTREMELY scary to think about a life where you cant use food as an emotional crutch. If you just go on a diet, you have an out, your old friend food is always there should you decide. But not with the band. But do you want to continue with your "normal" lifestyle? Look where it's led you. This is the START of a whole new life, not the end of one! You can do it and you will have to so you may as well try to think positively. Give yourself a time frame. The band is removeable so dont panic that you've done something permanent. But you cant have another major operation so soon, not for no real reason at all. They'd only do it if your health was at risk. Give yourself say 3 months and promise to do your best till then and then reconsider. I havent been banded yet, but judging by what others here have experienced, you wont want it out. The stomach pain will no doubt die down as you learn a new way to eat and drink. Now is probably the hardest time, but you will get through it.

  23. I just found www.collagevideo.com and cant believe the DVD's that are available. I'm soooo excited that you can get spin workouts and rebounder workouts - I have to do all no impact stuff at the moment because of my ankle but am quite fit so its a challenge finding something to suit my needs- my gym runs one spin class per week at 6.15 am on a Monday morning, grrr. I have a rebounder and a decent exercise bike that rarely gets used because well, I'd rather watch paint dry, but I love spinning. When you find something you love and something you can do, that is just challenging enough, it makes it so much easier to keep going.

    The Official PORK Thread

Pork is called "the other white meat" here because it is actually lower in fat than a lot of cuts of red meat. That is if you eat lean meat, not the crackling/rind, not bacon or other processed meat. But you can cook a leg of pork on a rack in the oven over some Water and just remove the crackling, there's butterfly steaks and other thin, lean individual cuts of pork that are great to put on the bbq, or to grill, pan fry or casserole or stir fry. I cant stand ham or bacon myself so dont hanker for those luckily.

My little pouchy bit went away within 6 months. The more I read the more I realise, I got through three pregnancies very lightly.
