How long did it take after your first fill before you got restriction
Jachut replied to Firecallie's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Same thing here Ladysplenda - a couple of weeks out of surgery and still having to remind myself to eat - I'm even eating an afternoon snack I really dont particularly want just to get a piece of fruit in daily. I'm still hovering around 1000 calories a day too and dont want to go lower, I just dont think it does your metabolism any good. Yet I've been stuck on 105.3 kg for an entire week and funnily enough, 105 is a weight I held for a good 12 months. I always tend to hit previously held weights and falter when I go on a diet. -
I'd prefer to eat smaller amounts of real foods than artificially sweetened stuff - I have a morbid fear of artificial sweeteners plus they give me a headache and I think they taste awful. It's all down to calories in vs calories out and I think you can safely say that given how many of the population is obese these days, artificially sweetened and low fat products have not made a big difference to our diet overall. We just eat more instead. So I dont down a tub of yogurt at a time for instance but will have a spoonful or two of real creamy full fat yogurt on my muesli in the morning. Not much difference in calories but a heap of difference in taste. I do drink skim milk though and always have.

A few drinks a week wont hurt you - even one a night but I would think 2 glasses a night - particularly since a glass of wine is rarely a standard measure anymore, but more like 2 or 3 measures of alcohol - would slow your weight loss significantly. Wine in moderation has health benefits! So enjoy it, I plan to as well, but probably just a glass a couple of times a week. I havent had much yet, but did have a glass or two over christmas. We've usually got a bottle open in the fridge. I dont drink beer or spirits or even juice, cordial or softdrinks so I refuse to feel guilty about the odd glass of wine.

Pay for the band! Poll!

Near nothing here - our public health system covers most of it, private health insurance allows you to choose your doctor, your hospital and not have to wait, the insurance pays all the hospital costs, the public health system pays all medical costs. I had a once off $A3,000 out of pocket payment to my surgeon which covers fills and aftercare forever, as well as any revision surgery if necessary. -
I had mine done on the 9th, I'm doing well. I feel totally normal again now, I lost almost 6kg during the liquids phase, started mushies last Thursday and since then my weight has not budged an ounce, although I guess to get through Christmas (we had 3 christmas dinners to go to ANd a birthday dinner) is pretty good going, I never would have managed that before. I suspect my fast weight loss ride is over now though and it's going to settle down to slow and steady so its time to stop jumping on the scales everytime I happen to be in the bathroom. I've had no trouble eating very well - I can manage about a cup at a time, no desire to snack between meals and I've been getting in fruit and veges and overall eating better than I have in a long time.

Since about day 2 I've had absolutely no trouble drinking Water normally. You definitely need a blender if you dont already have one. And lots of small containers.

This confuses me a little because I can eat about a cup of food but by my mental reckoning, this is still totalling under 1000 calories a day - so I dont really understand why it would be desirable to be able to eat much less. Although I guess it comes down to choices - make good food choices and eating a cup at a time is not going to hinder weight loss. -
I think after such a fast weight loss your body does want to hang on to the pounds and equalise itself a bit. I'm only 2 and a half weeks out, lost a quick 13lb or so on liquids and then as I've introduced solids my weight loss has stopped completely for the last week. AND I've been making good choices and am still averaging under 1000 calories a day. It's very very frustrating but in the long run it will come right. I'm realising it doesnt really start happening till those fills start.

I'm having the same problem and my tongue continues off and on to be the most disgusting greenish grey colour. The dietician confirmed what somebody here said (forgive me cant remember who) - eating hard foods exfoliates your tongue. Bad breath can come from constipation but I dont feel constipated, despite a lot less coming out these days. I get a rotten taste in my mouth quite often. I just keep brushing, flossing, using mouthwash and breathmints and try to drink lots and lots of Water.

I think its more that any time you're not eating plenty of fruit, veges and fibre containing foods, the contents of your intestines sit for much longer and smell worse! Nothing wrong with protein drinks in and of themselves, just that you miss out on a lot of your normal intake on the liquid phase.

HELP sick of soup and potatoes suggestions please

I made the most amazing Christmas dessert for our dinner with Doug's family last night and actually got to taste some if it. An ice cream like thing that was made with creme fraiche and spiced with cardamom and a few other things, accompanied by brandied fruit - so that it tasted like Christmas pudding without all the flour. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm........... gosh it was good!! You just need to use your imagination. I had scrambled eggs for lunch yesterday - done in a tiny dab of butter, with chives and some cheese, salt and pepper, yummy. Dahl, like I mentioned, fabulous with a dollop of greek style natural yogurt, I had thick set vanilla yogurt and mashed fruit for Breakfast today, tonight is Christmas dinner with my family - I get mashed veges (lots of roast pumpkin in the mix, love roast pumpkin) with gravy - at the moment everything seems like an amazing taste sensation to me, probably coz I've just done 2 weeks on liquids. Home made Soups are so good, I'd never eat canned soup willingly. Tuna or salmon mornay, macaroni cheese blended just a touch, there's so many things you can eat whilst on mushies if you think about it. -
Very temporary for me. The gas exiting my abdomen post surgery came out the usual way, plus the few days when I did drink protein shakes were bad. Once I got back onto regular food blended, something that actually had a bit of fibre in it, I was fine, and in fact I'd say I'm way less gassy than I used to be because there's so much less in my digestive system. Not that I ever had a problem, lol, but I have noticed I burp more but less comes out the other end!

banded 12/15 can someone tell how long will the pain last?
Jachut replied to mrsgdmc's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Its only now 2 weeks later that I've realised I do have a bit of gas discomfort, a week back I would have said I'd had no pain at all from the surgery. I feel exactly like I did after each of my babies was born - I got weak and achey in my left side, with a pain like a stitch. It bothers me when I stand up for long, its a bit tender to the touch, but not so bad that it particularly worries me, just annoying. I think they say generally 3 weeks give or take. -
Its only saline and a syringe - even if they miss the port they're not going to do any damage. They inject into your muscles all the time and dont pu puncture organs. The fluid isnt dangerous either.

how much weight are we suppose to loose a day!
Jachut replied to a_bit_pink's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
A kilo is 2.2 lb. I think in kilograms to as we're on a metric system in Australia, yet I would always say I'm 5ft 10 inches, not 178cm! -

I just posted a recipe for dahl on the general discussions board yesterday. It was delicious. -
Yummy yummy - those on mushies try this (and others too)
Jachut posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Lentil Dahl flavourful side dish with any curry or great on its own with natural yogurt 1 regular can of brown lentils (or boil 1 and a half cups of dried lentils or split peas in vegetable broth with some salt and turmeric until they're very tender). 2 tbsns olive oil 2 chopped onions 1 (or more if you like) clove of garlic minced or crushed 1/2 tspn cumin 1 tspn turmeric ground black pepper to taste 1/4 tsp hot chilli powder or cayenne pepper 1 cup coconut milk Saute onions and garlic and spices in the oil till golden and fragrant, stirring continously, mix in drained lentils and reheat gently. When hot stir in the coconut milk, let it simmer till it reduces to preferred consistency (mine took about 10 minutes for the lentils and diced onion to get very mushy). Very very delish! -

Oh goodness, you look amazing. From your very very first before pictures on your site it is hard to imagine it's possible that that's the same person!! How do you not just run around singing like a lunatic every day? You must be so happy. -
A little thought and effort put into what you eat makes the world of difference. I havent got my appetite back anything like what it was before, but I did quickly begin to crave taste and substance. I made the effort to make really yummy Soups and I even managed to blend some suitable family meals with canned tomatoes (lasagna and spaghetti bolognaise) into liquid consistency. I've just started on mushies, I had some porridge for Breakfast but for lunch I just had the most delicious scrambled eggs with chives, some cheese and salt and pepper followed by half a tinned pink lady apple smushed with a fork. It was delicious and I feel statisfied. If i tried to eat bleuch liek cottage cheese I'd be sneaking in the mac and cheese too. But why cant you blend it up a bit and eat it like that? I handled blended Pasta just fine in my liquid stage and I'm allowed to have things like minestrone now so you could indeed eat the mac and cheese. Treat yourself well with the band, enjoy your food! Just be innovative and make it enjoyable and you wont crave so much. The puree phase can be really enjoyable - I'm cooking a delicious dahl for tonight's dinner. I havent been told a restriction on quantities other than half to one cup and I can handle more towards a cup, but I stop before I feel really full.

Oh - yes that unfill idea is interesting. I would certainly consider that some years down the track if that was what they recommended. If you began to gain weight again you could nip it in the bud fairly quickly.
-
Yeah, I just mean they've been done in Australia for about 10 years and so far, so good for the majority of people. But only time will tell about the longer term.

My sister is hypothyroid, she only found out recently. She was always the most petite thing, she has a stomach like a washboard, not a gram of fat on her. She lived on virtually no food, she just never had an appetite, she'd skip Breakfast and lunch, and eat literally 3 peas and half a loin chop for dinner. When she began treatment, her appetite suddenly appeared and she gained 7kg. She had to work looooooong and hard and even started running half marathons to lose that weight, where she'd never had any trouble staying very thin before, now here metabolism and consequently her appetite are regulated, she has to watch it like most of us now. You never know how its going to affect you I guess but I really hope it works for you Vines, you deserve it.

In the information I was given from the dietician on Wednesday it says half a glass of flat coke can clear the hole! Dont know how true it is but that's what they suggest for stuck food - pour half a glass, let it sit and go flat and then drink it.
-
I was allowed to as long as they were cotton and they said to wear an old scungy pair becuase they'd get betadine all over them. Hah, have they looked in my top drawer? Try finding anything but old and holey knickers! Anway they didnt get betadine on them! I've never been allowed to wear underwear into surgery before - I would have thought it was a bit of a contamination risk. But they did make me shower with antibacterial stuff before I went in.
