    Okay how to cook

Not sure which surgery you had but if it was bypass sausage might be very difficult. I did great with chicken and fish those first months post surgery. The trick is to not overlook your meats so they are delicious and juicy. Also very important that you use a low fat sauce of some sort with meats, it will help it to slide down. For chicken breast I would season lightly, sear in a small amount of olive oil and pop it in the oven until just cooked through. You can add a marinara sauce or a healthy request cream of mushroom Soup or a fat free chicken gravy if you don't know how to make it.
  2. Soup, eggs, fish, cottage cheese. It took a long time before I could eat broccoli and even now it goes down better if it is cooked very tender. I would not attempt it so early on.

    Changing Tastes

@@Ashlegal I too can no longer tolerate Aquafina or Dasani. They both taste dusty to me. Smart Water too which used to be my favorite tastes funky. The only water I can drink is spring water.
  5. Very pretty and CHEESE! Yum!

    Insurance came through!

I am so happy for you! Now the excitement really starts. To me it really felt like Christmas morning. Everytime I lose weight or fit into a new size or do something I couldn't do before that same Christmas morning returns. Keep us posted on your surgery date. Hopefully they will get you in soon! Good luck!

    Ketchup and quiche

Yuck. Yuck. Yuck. You may find that you don't even like these things you are asking questions about. I used to love eggs, now they both gag me and sit so heavy in my tummy that I cannot eat them. Ketchup, I cannot remember the last time I used it. Maybe on a meatloaf recipe. Speaking of meatloaf, used to love it now I don't care if I ever eat it again. Oh and someone mentioned French fries. Double yuck. All I can taste is the oil they are fried in. I have tried them several times because they smell good but am always happy when they just don't appeal. Now, give me a piece of beef tenderloin, pork tenderloin ,chicken breast, fish or shrimp and I am all over that. Add a great vegetable or a side salad, yummo! It really is strange the way you change. I will say that I do love cheesecake now so I need to be very careful and treat myself only once in a while.
  8. @@dhrguru You have done very well in the first 6 months. Don't let everything you read or hear scare you. You are in control. I had some Dufas tell me when my weight loss did start slowing down that I was done losing. Well, that really pissed me off because I knew what crap that guy was full of. Yes, it slows down but if you stay true to the plan which you will, it will continue to come off. Also the hunger thing that comes back, it is nothing like what you knew hunger to be before. It can be addressed with very little. You know what you need to eat and you will do fine. No more self doubt, haven't you already proven that you can in fact do this? It certainly looks that way from this side. It is time to simply move forward and take no prisoners! Good luck to you, I bet at the end of 12 months that self doubt will be gone.
  9. @@Dub Let us know how that hobby horse goes down! LOL! Your posts literally keep me in tears! Laughing of course. I am not a male nor am I a sleeve but thought I would add my two cents. I don't know if this is all bypass folks or just me. I love to cook and love to grill. My relationship with food has definately changed but mostly for the good. I have noticed that I don't tolerate smoke flavor much anymore. In fact it can actually make me sick pretty quickly. I think it could be an aversion but I definately know that it has happened post surgery. I figure like most things, this will resolve over time but for now bacon is about the only smoky flavor I can tolerate and I certainly cannot do double smoke. I am 13 months post op and have yet to try any alcohol. The most I have done is take a tiny sip of my sons bourbon. Then again, I did not drink frequently pre surgery, maybe once every 6 weeks or so.
  10. Boy this is a great post, and reminder of the most important lessons I have learned along the way!
  11. Welcome! You are definately not alone. Good luck as you begin your journey.

    Yeast infections

You know, I have had a few of these but I have not connected it to having bypass surgery. I will be interested to see if others respond to this. I just go to the drugstore and get Monistat 1. It usually does the trick. I hate yeast infections! Ugh!

    Carbs

The best way to stop craving bad carbs is to stop eating them. Stick with good healthy carbs like vegetables and small amounts of fruit. The more sugar and junk you eat, the more your body craves it. The best way to get past it is to stick to the plan your doctor gave you which I am pretty sure does not include sugary and starchy foods like Pasta, bread, rice, sweets an d all processed foods. If you stick with veggies and small amounts of fruit, pretty soon your body will crave those instead. Good luck!

    Corn

I have had bypass and I eat corn as a vegetable about once per week. I have also had a small spoonful of corn cake and corn tortillas. The thing is, you will find that things like corn bread and corn tortillas fill up your pouch really fast and can even cause an uncomfortable feeling depending on how far post op you are. I literally get full on 1/2 cup to 1 cup of food and it is tight getting to my Protein goals if I eat only 3 meals so I try to save pouch space for protein. I still love corn and choose to eat it every once in a while using the 2/1 approach. 2 bites of protein for every 1 bite of carbs. I try to focus those carbs on veggies. I track my carbs every day for every meal and find if I stay under 100 grams a day, I lose weight, if I go over, I don't lose and can even cause a stall.
  15. I don't eat any prepackaged meals but there are a few things you can buy and simply enjoy. My number 1 go to lunch is 1 percent cottage cheese, I will have that with some slices tomatoes or a small garden salad. I use dressings with olive oil or balsamic and olive oil. Cottage cheese has a lot of Protein and is delicious. Fresh mozerella cheese with sliced tomatoes, fresh basil balsamic vinegar and olive oil also makes a great lunch. You could add a slice of lunch meat for added protein. I make chicken salad a lot and it is super easy using a can of chicken breast meat, chopped celery, chopped dill pickle and either mayo or miracle whip. I spread the chicken salad on cucumber slices or a few crackers. I can eat 3 crackers with chicken salad for lunch and I am full. Baked ham luncheon meat with a slice of cheese rolled up in it. Ready to eat peel and eat shrimp makes a great lunch or snack Beef jerkey makes a great snack

    Kibbeh

Definately not in the weight loss phase. Anytime you introduce carbs that are not veggies, you will likely stall. Those stalls can be a real pain in the neck.
  17. What you are going through is completely normal and yes, frustrating too. I did the Protein shake pre op diet for 10 days and lost 13lbs. You just have to follow the plan as hard as you can. Shrinking your liver is the most important thing for a safe surgery. Keep your eye on the prize and you will get through it.

    The Stumbling Block

Hi there! Congratulations on getting to your surgery, that in itself is a heck of a lot of work. My process took 9 months. Little did I know that it was the easy part. The hard part is dealing with all of the change that happens because you have chosen this path. All of this change is for the better, your wife just hasn't realized it yet. She will be able to cook and bake for you, it will likely come a little later and it will look much different than it does today. Which by the way, will likely be good for her health as well. Everything takes time, you have already accepted that things will change, your family needs a little longer as they are not far enough along in the journey. Also, you are right they are probably a little scared for you right now. Keep reminding them why you have chosen this path and teaching them about this disease. If we could all change our metabolism and keep it that way, we would not need the surgery for help. Good luck with your family and your upcoming surgery! I am sure you will do great.
  19. This is normal and your body is just resting. My longest stall lasted 5 weeks and about drove me crazy. Things do slow down but if you continue the weight loss phase of the plan, track your nutrition and ultimately keep moving the stall will break. I thought mine never would but it did and I dropped another 10lbs in the last 2 weeks. I am now 15 lbs from goal. Be patient follow the plan and if the scale makes you crazy (like it did me during that time), stay off for a while. All of a sudden my body just started dropping weight again.

    Fever after surgery

Now, call your surgeon now. Fever is an indicator that you could have an infection going on. Keep us posted and get well soon.

    Ugh

I did not cook for my family at all until thanksgiving which was 8 weeks post op for me. I could not tolerate the smell of most food until that point. Even now my husband will go get some crap food (as I call it) that I would have craved or eaten prior to surgery. I cannot stand the smell of it and have absolutely no desire to eat it at all. I will say later on, my desire for food came back but the good news is I look forward to good quality Protein and veggies. I savor what I now choose to eat. It is healthy and delicious and I look forward to planning and cooking meals. I rarely look forward to eating out because I cannot control what restaurants put in my food. Tonight we are going to an Italian restaurant with friends we haven't seen in some time. I already know I will be ordering fish and a salad but honestly I could care less about the food. I look forward to seeing our friends and then looking at Halloween decorations together. Your relationship with food will change if you embrace that change fully. I no longer live to eat, I eat to live.
  23. Yeah! Congratulations on finally getting there. You are going to be so happy you did. I will be thinking about you the morning of the 16th. I will be having surgery on my spine that morning as well. They are removing a neurostimulator and performing a laminectomy in the hopes of resolving severe back pain. Good luck and best wishes for a safe surgery and speedy recovery!

    Flavored Water

I used to use an infuser bottle shortly after surgery. The only thing I drink is Water so I though flavored water would help me get it all down. I found post surgery even water had a funky taste to it depending on the water I was drinking. For me filtered waters like Dasani taste dusty to me. Smart water which used to be my favorite also has a funky taste. Spring water tastes delicious all by itself or with some fruit in it. I am not a fan of all the SF water drops you can buy so I either drink plain or use lemon, limes, cucumber, strawberries, peaches or mint in it. Most of the time plain old water is perfect for me.
