  1. If I want cake, I will eat cake. The reality is, it isn't even good anymore so after I deal with my head I realize that little bit of cake is not something I need. If I don't give in to that craving once in a while then it's all I can think about. I love that things just don't taste like they once did. Ice cream used to be my thing. Every time I try it, I think why was this my thing? There is nothing special about it for me and honestly it makes my tummy hurt now. Probably my biggest issue is cheesecake. I still love it and have a tiny piece every once in a while. It satisfies me and I can control that craving easily because it's heavy and sits heavy. A bite or two and I am done and have dealt with that craving. So the short answer is yes you can have cake again, you may not want to or your pouch may not want you to but sure give it a try.

    Slower than I expected

    I would simply say your ally are right on track. The first 8 weeks your focus needs to be on healing and less about weight loss. The weight will come off when it is ready, I promise. Keep doing what you are doing 64 oz. of liquids, 1 gram of Protein for every inch you are tall and limit carbs/sugar. You are actually doing great!

  4. I have to say since having surgery 14 months ago, I have definitely learned to cook a lot less than I once did. I have also tried so many new recipes because I absolutely love to cook and having this surgery has turned me on to foods I just simply never bothered with before. I can only tolerate leftovers once before I get sick of it and toss it out. I freeze what I can but even cooking a lot less quantity results in wasted food. There are times however when I make something and for whatever reason I just don't tolerate it this time and I end up tossing it. It is like I go through phases when my pouch behaves and sometimes it don't.

  6. I always look forward to your posts because they crack me up. This whole belt suspenders thing is a pain in the ass. Not sure about you but I swear a large part of my weight loss came from my ass. I no longer have one! I mean literally, I no longer have one so therefore every pair of pants I put on have issues. If the waist fits, the ass is baggy. This is my new look!

    Fall Comfort Foods

    Ok, I am definitely going to try your suggestion for roasted candied nuts. I love nuts. For a while there I was eating them fairly frequently in small portions. Lately I have kept my snacking to a minimum but those sound really good. I have always loved roasted cinnamon almonds. You know, the ones you smell at the fair! I may make some homemade ones.

    Speaking of salad, I am having a really nice one for lunch! I do use full fat salad dressing in my salad. That little bit of fat is important and keeps you fuller longer. I also eat full fat cheese which I eat daily. I do however watch the sugar content in my dressings. I either make it homemade or I select the ones in the refrigerator section of my produce department. There are a few that I will use in a pinch. When I make dressing homemade I use a good olive oil for my fat.
  9. You should not try to solve this by yourself. I would definitely recommend seeing a therapist that can help you work through this issue. Having you tell your family members they need to eat it until gone might in fact cause a health problem with them. I will say that purchasing a vacuum sealer is a very good investment for us. You can vacuums seal portions that are small enough, throw it in the freezer and pop it into some boiling Water. The Protein stays moist and you always have something to eat on hand. That doesn't take care of that need to not waste though. You could end up a member of the clean plate club as you continue to heal and that could sabatoge your efforts. Realistically there will be some waste and it honestly is ok.

  11. Hi and welcome! You are definitely taking the right steps to get educated on surgical options for this disease. I think the biggest learning for me was understanding that obesity is a metabolic disease. For those of us that have it, it is difficult to get it into remission without some type of intervention. As you know from your Atkins experience, your body simply fights you every step of the way until you make permanent changes. This is why you lose weight only to gain it all back and then some. I did Atkins as well among other things, the reality is without the tool that helps you restrict food, that weight always comes back on over a period of time. Weight loss surgery is far from the easy way out. You literally have to change your relationship with food and drink. The surgery simply helps make that process a little easier but the behaviors are still yours to maintain. We fight for every single pound lost and maintained. We have to make better food choices every single day. We have to get moving and stay moving to maintain our new slimmer bodies. I would spend some time understanding what obesity is and why/how people get it. Once you understand that, the decision becomes a whole lot easier. You will learn to eat 3 meals a day and why that really is so important. Skipping meals sounds like a great idea but the reality is it actually causes metabolic issues. You will learn to eat good quality Protein and good carbs like fruits and vegetables. Your body begins to crave that instead of the garbage we used to eat. Your new stomach helps you but you still have to make the right choices. Not easy at all. Good luck to you!

    Standstill

    Stalls are a common part of the process. Your body simply needs time to breathe. Follow your food, drink and exercise plan and the stall will take care of itself. If seeing the stall frustrates you, the best thing you can do is stay off the scale. I have had many stalls over the last 14 months, they all break in their own time. Good luck!

  14. I love myfitnesspal and even though it doesn't take into consideration our low calorie count it tracks all my nutrients very effectively. I think I was very successful in part because of how I track everything I put in my mouth via myfitnesspal.
  15. Yeah! Feeling better today. As many of you know I had more back surgery on Monday. It was a terribly rough couple of days but I think I am out on the other side now. Let's hope anyway! Going to get to shower today!

    Vegetables?

    Veggies cooked really well like carrots, cauliflower, Beans, peas at the puréed stage. I could not tolerate salad until I was almost 5 months post op. It just did not sit well. Now, I eat a lot of salad and my pouch loves it! Fibrous veggies like broccoli and Brussels took me a lot longer and those have to be cooked to soft even now. I love my veggies. I have 2 bites of veggies for every 1 bite of Protein which is what my nut taught me. She has always been focused on a balanced meal.
  17. The best thing for you to do is remain positive. Gastric bypass surgery is pretty safe. I believe the statistics are something like 1/1000. You could worry yourself sick with thinking of all the things that could go wrong. The reason they do all this pre op testing is to make sure you have the best possible chance to get through surgery. They won't operate if it is not relatively safe. You are in much more danger by doing nothing as you already know. People die when they don't follow the plan. If your doctor requires the liver cleanse diet you follow it, if you are a smoker quit, etc. Complications arise when you don't follow the plan but I can assure you they won't attempt it if there is concerns that you won't come out of surgery. Take some deep breaths, ask your surgeon about his/her mortality rate and let him know your fears. I would bet you will feel much more at ease. Having this surgery done actually saved my life. It is the best thing I ever did for myself. Good luck to you!

    Fluids HELP

    It is possible to over drink and flush all the salt out of your system but it is really hard to do. You have to drinks gallons and sweat like crazy. The signs of this is when you start to get dizzy and feel feint. I know this only because it happened to me and I was told to add a drink with electrolytes as part of my regimen or add salt to my Water. I just simply backed off a little on the water.

    Sleep Apnea? :/

    It does take a little practice before you get used to it. You might also find that trying different style masks will work better for you. My hubby and I found one that just goes over your nose. It seals better and is super comfortable. It is not the nose cannula one but it fits over just your nose. Once I got the mask right I got so used to it that I couldn't sleep without it, it became comforting. It now took me a while to get used to sleeping without it.

    Sleep Apnea? :/

    Most people who suffer from obesity actually have sleep apnea and don't even know it. It is very dangerous to not know it. If you remember, Reggie White from the Green Bay Packers actually died from sleep apnea. On a good note, it is considered a comorbitity and will help with the approval process. On another good note, once you get through surgery and lose the weight you will likely lose the apnea too. I was on bi-pap for the last 10 years. Now I can sleep even flat on my back without a machine and without waking myself up all night long. Good luck to you!

    The 3rd Week Stall

    @@thbrown223 I had the infamous 3 week stall that lasted 2 weeks and then again at 3 months. I have had so many that I cannot even count. The longest one was at 8 months and lasted 5 weeks. When I say a stall, I mean NO weight lost at all during that period of time. If I lost a pound it was not a stall. There are also times when you will lose a pound then gain it back then lose it again. It is simply part of the process that we go through. During that 5 week stall I actually had to stay off the scale because it actually frustrated me. Normally I don't let the scale dictate how I feel but that time I will admit I was very frustrated. Then all of a sudden wham I will drop weight again. I stall out now after I drop 10lbs. Then I go back and forth and it all begins again.

    The 3rd Week Stall

    The Protein will help break your stall as well, especially if you are not getting enough. 1 gram for every inch you are tall minimum. It will help you heal and will help you lose. I am the stall queen, I swear! The only thing you can do is follow the plan and wait it out. Good luck!

  24. The only thing you can really do is take Biotin which will help with regrowth. The hair will stop shedding when the weight stops shedding. Stay on top of your Protein and Water because it will help as well.

    I just wanted to say hi and welcome. I hope you have a safe surgery and speedy recovery. I did not have a revision so I cannot help you with those specific questions but there are plenty of people on this site who can.
