<sigh> I gave in....
Djmohr replied to birdiestofbirds's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ok, give yourself a break. We all slip, the important thing is that you recognize it and get back on track. Incidentally, was it as good as you imagined? Ice cream used to be my weakness and now I really do not care if I ever have it again. Same think with anything milk chocolate. For me when I want something sweet it's all about cheesecake. I have it every once in a while just to keep me satisfied. Then I find I don't have many slips. I give myself permission, I track it so I know how to adjust the rest of the day. Then I don't feel so guilty. Take a deep breath, pull up your boot straps and get back to business. You will do great! -
That really stinks! I am sorry that you are having to consider more surgery. I know there are a lot of people on this site that had revisions to bypass so hopefully you will get your questions answered. Many of them have done fantastic with bypass. I can tell you that from what I have read, the initial weight loss is much slower but I have seen folks get to goal. Personally I am so thankful I went the bypass route because it put several illnesses into remission for me. One of them was very severe Gerd, I have not had a single bout of heartburn at all. My diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, anemia and stage 3 kidney disease are also all in remission. Do you still have the same insurance? You might want to give them a call to better understand coverage. I had Medica United Health Care and I was only allowed 1 Bariatric WLS surgery in my lifetime. Now I have a completely different insurance and they cover nothing. It really depends on your specific insurance. I wish you the best of luck!

How wonderful! Congratulations. My hubby was going to do it with me but ended up having 2 heart surgeries that held him back. I really wish he would have had the surgery shortly after because I swear he is gaining what I am losing. Even one of my doctors gave him a hard time on Monday because I look normal now which makes him look even bigger and the doctor is worried about him. He has a difficult time sticking to a plan as he munches without even realizing what he is doing. I am very worried about his long term health. I hope that everything goes well for both you and hubby and you are on the road to recovery. Don't get overwhelmed, take it one day at a time. I have never regretted my decision to have bypass. I am less than 5 months from my goal and for the first time since I was 22, I have a normal BMI. I am 52. My grown boys tell me that they never remember me being this thin. That's because from the moment I had my 2nd child I started gaining weight like crazy.

@@sbtanewme Is your doctor saying there is a problem with your sleeve?
-
@@NatashaSaysRawr It looks like you haven't had your surgery yet. I had bypass and I don't know how different the sleeve is but I had absolutely no interest in anything sweet initially after surgery. In fact anything that even smelled sweet would turn my stomach and I was a sugarholic before surgery. For me at about 5 months post op I went on a Hawaiian vacation and my granddaughter had a slice of Oreo cheesecake. It looked absolutely delicious so I stuck my fork in it and then did it again and one more time. That was the night I learned that I truly don't dump. Now I still don't like anything overly sweet and thank goodness for that but I do get cravings for something sweet. I try very hard not to give in to my sweet tooth because it really is a slippery slope. I will usually have a pot of chocolate chai tea made with skim milk. The only sugar is that in the milk but it's enough to satisfy me. On occasion I will have a real treat but it is definately the exception not the rule. Anyway, are you wondering because you have a sweet tooth now? You definately want to focus your efforts on good carbs and stay away from processed foods and sugar to have the best possible weight loss. There will be the occasions down the road but initially I personally would stay away. That's just me. Good luck Monday!

Ok, so I pulled the nutritional data because let's face it I am Italian and I miss my Pasta. Yes I have had pasta however my pouch does not like it. I have tried high Protein pasta and get the same result. These Shirataki noodles have no nutritional value at all. The thing that is bad for someone so newly post op is that they will expand in your tiny pouch taking up precious room for good protein and good carbs like vegetables. According to the data because they are made from Water they will swell. I personally would not waste the space in my pouch. Down the road you can try some whole grain or high protein pasta. At least you would get some nutritional value out of them. I hope this makes sense.

No fruit juices whatsoever ever in my diet. My nut would prefer I actually eat a piece of fruit which delivers the Fiber as well. The amount of sugar in fruit juices is significant. The only time I had any fruit juice was week 1 post op they had me mix unsweetened apple juice with Water. 1/3 apple juice to 2/3 water. As soon as I moved on to full liquids they had me remove all fruit juices completely and as I said told me to eat fruit rather than drink the juice.

Tired of Unhappy Stomach
Djmohr replied to bugsy72's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Incidentally when I do have a meal that reacts this way. I wait a few hours and will have a small pot of chocolate chai tea made with skim milk. It is very soothing and my pouch loves it. It also makes up my missing protein as its made with 16 oz of delicious skim milk with a hint of chocolate and chai spices. It is my absolute favorite treat and provides 17 grams of protein. -
Your experience eating sugar after bypass
Djmohr replied to MozzaWehsha's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I can eat both sugar and fat in small amounts with no problem. I have not heard of passing out from too much sugar, I have had episodes of reactive hypoglycemia and that can cause some serious symptoms. -
@@jj7481 I see this all the time with my sister n law and brother n law. Both get disability and Medicaid. Both are addicted to prescription pain medications and one to alcohol. They must go to the ER at least once a week, seriously. Their attitude is I am not paying for it so what the hell. And what they do have to pay for my father n law takes care of. He is a constant enabler of this behavior and honestly is so stupid about it that he will believe anything they tell him. For example once a week he writes them a check for between 500 and 1000 without ever seeing a doctors bill at all. There has to be a way for people that abuse the system and ruin it for everyone else that really needs it.

Ok so today I went shopping because my size 12 jeans were getting fairly loose. I went to my favorite place to buy jeans since having WLS. Lucky Brand Jeans. I grab a pair of sweet and straight jeans in a size 10 and I am grinning from ear to ear because I am confident they are going to fit and I love that feeling. I have not fit into jeans this small since I was a teenager. I put them on and I am right! They fit fantastic! I come out of the dressing room and model for hubby who promptly says, those look a little big. Maybe you should think about a smaller size. I the immediately say "no way!" An 8 is not going to fit me. I am honestly not sure if I have ever worn a size that small. I decide to encourage him and prove there is no way I will get them up. I grab an 8 and head back into the dressing room. I look at this tiny pair of jeans and go, here goes nothing. They fit perfectly! I could hardly believe my eyes. Then the sales clerk tells me that they are buy one get one half off but she says the darker dyes seem to be more forgiving so she gives me an 8 and a 6 to try on. I laughed but thought well just see how far off you are. Well, I put the 6 on, buttoned them up and stood there in shock. Now, I didn't buy the 6 because although I could wear them, I do like my jeans to be comfortable and have a little room. So when I started this journey I wore 24 jeans and 26/28 tops. I am now in a size 8 and a medium or large top. Sometimes I have to get the large because I have a lot of loose skin. I cannot believe where I am today! For me, clothes shopping is when I can really see the thinner me.

Tired of Unhappy Stomach
Djmohr replied to bugsy72's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I still have the occasional experience like this. It happened last night for me with some delicious baked chicken and a garden salad. I am not certain why it happens but occasionally foods that you eat regularly may bother you for a few hours. I do hate when it happens because I then feel like I did not get enough good Protein in. I don't have dumping, I just get that blocked feeling with a bit of nausea mixed in and as you said even Water doesn't work for a while. I will say that I noticed the recovery time improves over time. -
A Disease called OBESITY - A *MUST WATCH* Video by Reeger Cortell
Djmohr replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
This is a great video and a great reminder that obesity is a disease. Thanks for sharing it Alex! -
Are you really getting in all of your Water and Protein at one week post op? For me that was absolutely impossible because of the swelling inside. I ask because dehydration can feel exactly like hunger. You should not have a lot of stomach acid because you had bypass and the hunger hormone itself should not yet be present. So it realistically could be dehydration or head hunger and as James said that need to chew something. I remember that feeling as well and it really can mimic hunger.

What's Realistic for 6 months post-op?
Djmohr replied to KittyBabbitt's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
First congratulations on your weight loss! 67lbs is a lot of weight in six months. You have to remember that comparing your loss with others does not make a lot of sense given everyone is different. Everyone loses at different rates but in the end it all evens out. Also I would add that losing slower and consistently is much easier on your body in the end. I have had many many stalls along the way. Some were caused by my own behaviors getting in the way and others were simply my body taking a break. When the stall goes on for several weeks I take a look at my diet and exercise and see if there is something I am doing that needs to stop. I track everything I eat, good or bad so it's right there for me to see. When a stall begins for me it is usually because my carbs are higher for a couple of days. I have learned that if I stay around 1000 calories or less, less than 80 grams of carbs and around 75 to 80 grams of Protein consistently I lose. If my carbs or calories go above that for a day it can trigger a stall which can last sometimes for several weeks. If it goes beyond 3 weeks I adjust my carb intake and I usually begin losing again. If I eat 1200 calories a day with similar carb and protein goals I see to maintain. I have not yet figured how high I can go but because I am very close to goal I plan to figure that out as well. If you want to lose faster, you should take a look at the balance of those nutrients to better understand where your sweet spot is. You may already know that but you didn't include it in your op. -
What a great day! Congratulations!

Yes, I hate my new turkey neck.

If I got back all the hours I sat in airports or on the tarmack.......I used to travel for work every week for about 15 of my 25 years at Best Buy. I would be a whole lot younger! Just saying!

It is a great feeling when you discover that there are behaviors you can change that make you successful. WLS is so much more about getting your head straight than it is about a smaller tummy. If only we could help others understand that. Congratulations!

Now that I am 16 months post op and have literally been fighting every day to lose this weight and keep it off this kind of crap really irritates me. This is not the cheat way or the easy way and people who say things like this including shows like the biggest loser, people magazine and even the new skin tight show annoy the hell out of me. At the end of the day the most important thing is to lose the weight to get healthy regardless of how you get it done. There is no magic wand anywhere for this. We all know that whether you lose it with or without surgery it requires diet and exercise. It requires new behaviors every single day. Having WLS helped me understand what I was doing wrong Everytime I lost weight before. I always went back to old behaviors and that can certainly happen again but now I am fully aware of what I cannot do. After having my guts rearranged I refuse to screw it up again. That is not cheating, it is education and a lot of hard work. I am very sorry you are dealing with this but get used to it because it won't be the last time you hear it. If you share your story people will put their uneducated 2 cents in. I have learned to have very thick skin. It still irritates me but I am learning to deal with it.

I am big into crafts: Knitting Crochet Cross stitch Quilting Sewing I also love to read, watch movies (I have a collection of over 1666 titles of DVD) - I used to work at Best Buy and would buy new ones every new release Tuesday I also love to travel and spend time with my grandchildren

Ugh! I am having a nuclear stress test in about an hour in preparation for my shoulder surgery. Nuclear because with my crappy shoulder and back I cannot run on a treadmill. I hate the way that medication effects me. Oh well, I am expecting good results and the last time I had a stress test was about a week before my bypass in 2014. Not a fun day today....
-
Well, the test itself was no problem however I had to put my arms up over my head for the test. That resulted in my shoulder separating. Yes, seriously. I had a torn rotator cuff and severe arthritis of the AC joint now we can add a separated shoulder to that. I have a huge bump on my shoulder now. It's almost comical. I have to laugh or I think I would be crying. One more week and that will be repaired.

Energy levels after your operation
Djmohr replied to LizzieP's topic in Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery Forum
I had RNY 16 months ago. I am down 140lbs and very close to goal but still losing. The first week is the roughest from an energy perspective. I was on Clear liquids for that week and had not yet started Protein. Week 2 was better after starting Protein shakes on a full liquid diet. At week 3 more improvement but still exhausted by early afternoon. By week 4 things improved a lot but would still get tired in afternoon. At week 8 I felt pretty much like myself again. The reality is it is difficult to get enough fluids and protein in during those first few weeks because you are very swollen. You literally have to be sipping Water and protein all day long. If you don't, you get tired, dehydrated which then causes a whole host of other symptoms. It is a vicious circle. Most people learn very quickly how critical proper hydration is and then of course the protein which helps you heal. It all sounds so easy but right after surgery you really do not feel like eating or drinking anything so getting a minimum of 48 to 64 oz of fluids in is much more difficult than you think. For me, getting used to executing fluids every single was more difficult than the surgery itself. Once I was about 8 weeks post op, life became much more normal for me and I am still losing 16 months post op. I am about to head into maintenance. Good luck to you! -
Glad to hear that everything went well and you are safely recovering.
