Just tell me I'm doing the right thing!
Djmohr replied to Sunshine_Gal's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
@@esskay77, I was told the exact same thing and I focus on grams of Protein. If I snack I snack on nuts, cheese or beef Jerky. I saw my nut today and the are extremely happy with my progress and eating behaviors. I would never hit 75 of more protein grams in a day without a Protein shake and without snacking, Even though I don't count calories, I track my food intake everyday using fitness pal. I know if I am eating too much fat, or carbs but I don't really count. It helps me make better food choices. -
What is the recovery like for tummy tuck, breast lift with agumentation
Djmohr replied to hkdontplay's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
Thanks for sharing your stories with us. I am past the halfway point in my weight loss and because of my age my skin is a real issue everywhere. I am working out regularly and I understand that I might get some bounce back but I am not expecting a lot. I now have no rear, very saggy thighs, , what I call very bad grandma arms and of course my boobs and tummy are very saggy now too. It's almost like someone stuck a pin in me and let all the air out. I definitely plan to do plastics and my hubby is very supportive. I cannot wait until I am ready to have some of these procedures. The first will be dealing with my arms. -
I am not sure if it is about the fat content or not. I began eating them at 12 weeks and I have no problems. I also eat shelled pistachios. Nut are one of my favorite snack items along with beef Jerky and cheese. I do eat fat in my diet and have not had any problems and am losing on a very good pace. I just wonder if maybe it is a little too soon for you. Everyone is different so although they cleared you, you will need to listen to your body, which it sounds like you are doing a great job of. Try again in another couple of weeks.

Will insurance pay for protein drinks?
Djmohr replied to GADeltaDawn's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have not heard anything about premier protein being a problem for bypass patients. In fact it was my surgical team that recommended it for me because I do not tolerate whey protein isolate. I see my nutritionist tomorrow afternoon and plan to ask that question. -
90 down! Almost there!
Djmohr replied to theresajudith's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
You look absolutely amazing! Congratulations! -
I have been wearing guards on my rings after I lost my first 30lbs which was about a month post op. Now even the ring guards don't help. I am taking both of mine in today for the first resizing. Also as far as losing shoe size ( I wear 11s too). I did go from a extra wide width to a narrow. Some shoes I can fit in a 10 1/2 but it is rare.

This is interesting, I have the exact same thing going on. I have no idea where they are coming from. Has anyone gotten an answer on this?

How shameful that your mother in particular treated you this way. Being a mother and grandmother myself I cannot imagine ever making my children feel this way. You definitely don't need that in your life. It sounds like you are persevering and have made steps to become a healthier new you. It will be important for you not to allow your family to bring you down. Half the battle is about staying positive. You have friends here on this site when you need them. As hard as it might be to ignore and stay away from negative influences in your life, you will have to continue to stay strong and lean on your wife and friends that are supportive. You should be very proud of yourself for taking steps to improve your life. It is so worth it! Good luck and God bless!

Telling people you've decided on WLS...
Djmohr replied to blashlee's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I told many people but only after I was well down the road to surgery with an imminent approval from insurance. I wanted to make sure it was really going to happen before I told people. I have received nothing but support from all my friends and family. If folks are gossiping behind my back, I figure let them. I have a lot of will power so I know that I will be successful. Good luck in your decisions! -
I suspect you are in starvation mode. Not enough calories or protein. I might suggest you call your surgeons office and have a quick conversation.

Rumbling stomach when I sip liquid
Djmohr replied to icunightingale's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am definitely one of those people who's grouch pouch makes noise. Liquids definitely make more noise than solids. It is loud enough for my husband to hear it. For me it has nothing to do with hunger at all, it just makes noise. The reality is I have gotten very used to it and don't even notice unless hubby starts chuckling, then I realize it is happening. It is not bothersome and not so loud that everyone can hear it, he just happens to be sitting next to me. -
At what age would you have Weight Loss Surgery (WLS) if you had a do-over?
Djmohr replied to JustWatchMe's topic in The Lounge
For me, I absolutely wish I would have done this a lot sooner. I of course like others waited until I had many comorbidities. I am 51 now and wish I would have gone through the process in my 30s. I feel like I gave up so much of my youth with this disease. I had no real idea of how much better my life would be post surgery. As far as my child goes, if they were obese and they are not, I would support them in their choices. I don't think I would suggest it only because I feel like it takes a lot for a person to get to the point where they truly understand the damage. You have to get there yourself. For me it was a doctor telling me I was headed for kidney dialysis if I did not do something soon. Yes, I actually damaged my kidneys. The good news is in less than 5 short months all of my labs are normal. Why wouldn't I want to do this sooner?! -
I think everyone gets frustrated when you have one of those crappy stalls where u go back and forth. The important thing is to keep on fighting. Look how far you have come and how close to goal you are! You have done a fantastic job in such a short amount of time. Think back to before surgery how hard it was to drop the weight and how long it took. You just had surgery in November and you only have 41lbs to go. Don't give up now, it might be best to ignore the scale for a couple of weeks and stick to the food plan. Your stall will break and pounds will start to drop off again. I wish you the best, I know you can do this!

Exercise - what do you do 1 month out
Djmohr replied to annelisem's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I did go through that as well in the beginning. I finally decided to increase my exercise to help build stamina. For me it really worked and that tired feeling went away. I did have to ensure I drank my 30gram protein shake right before my work out. I do 20 minutes on an elliptical and 20 minutes on the treadmill. Sometimes I increase the time if I am feeling good enough. I started this at 6 weeks post op. -
Interesting, I take a beta blocker for the prevention of migraines. It is a low dose but I have noticed that it does not seem to be working as well as it once did. Also I excercise regularly and in the last few weeks I noticed that it is pretty easy to reach my target heart rate, as you know that is usually much harder to do on beta blockers. I have been wondering if my beta blocker is simply not as effective. I am getting migraines every other day but thought my cervical spine was actually making them worse. Now I wonder if my preventative is working. I will have to ask my doctor about that.

Slower than expected. Normal?
Djmohr replied to BobbySpreck's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
You are likely entering your first of many stalls. I will tell you the weight coming off does slow down to a maybe a a pound of two a week. As long as things are moving in the right direction which it sounds like you are, that is a great thing. The most important thing is to get your Protein and Water in. If you are only getting 1/4 cup three times per day, you are likely not hitting your protein goal unless you are supplementing with Protein shakes. I am certain if your protein and water is where it should be, your weight will continue to drop, it will be more slowly than the first month. -
Anyone else have discomfort between rib cage?
Djmohr replied to BobbySpreck's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I definitely have this problem if I eat too fast, don't chew my food enough or take a pill (calcium) that is a little to big. Also if I gulp water and too much air gets in there with it. -
I definitely experienced this as well. I had to keep on trying. At about 10/12 weeks I noticed things changed for the better and now I rarely have a problem.

Four days until surgery and I'm a bundle of nerves!
Djmohr replied to #1Coltsfan's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You are going to be so excited when you get through this procedure and start seeing the results! Congratulations! I was told I had a hernia and they were going to repair it while performing surgery but when they got in there, no hernia.i guess my general doctor had no idea what she was talking about, as usual. Good luck on your surgery! -
Congratulations on your fantastic progress!

Letting go of my armour
Djmohr replied to jackie's journey's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have purged my closet 3 times since surgery. I have gone from a size 26 to a size 16. Last time I was in a 16 was in my 20's, I am 51. I used to hate hate hate clothes shopping, now I love it! It is so much fun to buy regular clothes from regular stores, try them on and they fit! Also I have had to replace all of my shoes, it was the first thing I had to replace. I have normal feet and ankles now and my wide width shoes were so sloppy they made my feet hurt. I have still held on to a couple of items that I really love. I swim in them but plan to have them altered because I simply love them. I believe the more weight you lose, the more comfortable you will be with purging your suit of armor. -
Possible revision from lapband to bypass..LOTS of questions!
Djmohr replied to marieze's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I wanted to respond to a couple of your questions about living after RNY since so many of the others have been answered. I am 5 months post op from RNY and doing fantastic. Best decision I ever made! I can pretty much eat anything just in much smaller amounts. I happen to be one of the lucky folks who does not get bouts of dumping syndrome. I have tried sweets (just a taste) but have found I no longer care about that stuff. They say, you crave what you eat. I have worked hard to focus on eating primarily Protein and vegetables. My pouch loves those foods! Occasionally I will have a bite of potatoes or rice just to get a taste. I do not worry too much about fat, i eat cheese, Jerky, nuts, real butter, olive oil. The thing is, if you stick to your measurements it all works out. It truly is about eating the right things. I DO NOT eat junk food of any kind. As far as supplements go, I thought they would be a pain as I hated taking Vitamins pre surgery. Having this surgery has allowed me to get off all other meds with the exception of thyroid replacement. Trust me, I was on a lot of meds! Taking vitamins daily for me is no big deal and less costly than my prescriptions. I purchase in bulk from costco. I wish you the absolute best with your upcoming decisions. Don't be afraid of taking the steps to RNY, it works! You still have to do your part but there is a reason it is the gold standard. I only wish I would have done it sooner. For the first time since I was in my teens, I feel fantastic. I have more energy and stamina! I have been given a whole new life! -
I did not realize we could revert back to NSAIDs at all. I will have to ask my surgeons office that question next week when I check in. Thanks for the heads up.
