Hang in there. This exact thing happened to me as well. The nurse that processes the paperwork for approval went on vacation for 3 weeks and never submitted it. I had been waiting all that time for no reason. The good news is once they processed it (that very same day I called) , I had an answer back from my insurance company within 12 hours. I could not believe how fast they turned it around. I hope the same thing happens for you. Good luck and stay on them!

Day 6 post op and hunger is starting
Djmohr replied to innwtitdtity's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
As @@SugarFreeMe said, dehydration can feel very much like hunger. You have to do your best to keep sipping those liquids. Soup, tea, Water, sf Popsicles, sf Jello all will help your situation. If it is not dehydration, it is likely head hunger. when they performed your bypass they sever the nerves that trigger the hunger hormone and it will be some time before you feel actual hunger. What ever you do stay away from cooking shows on tv. They are like food porn and can truly trigger head hunger. I cannot watch them at all anymore, which is fine with me. Good luck to you! -
I cannot stand artificial sweeteners at all. I drink plain water instead. I actually think they taste almost over sweetened. I don't like the taste of anything that is too sweet, it all tastes weird to me. I simply stay away.

Your post was outstanding. Very motivational and oh so true! After I was diagnosed with stage 3 kidney disease I DECIDED to take my life back and I have not looked back once. I thank god every day for providing us with excellent doctors who have learned so much about obesity and have figured out a way for us to cure ourselves so we can get our health back. I wish you the best of luck with your upcoming surgery, I will say a prayer for you for a speedy recovery so you can get on with your new life. Every day is exciting!

Wanted sleeve. Help me believe RNY is better.
Djmohr replied to Gemini216's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I too had a severe case of Gerd prior to surgery and I went in wanting the sleeve for all the same reasons you mentioned. When I was told that RNY was the best surgery for me I actually got a second and third opinion. Every doctor told me I would be making a huge mistake to have the sleeve given my Gerd situation. I actually have psoriatic arthritis and my spine has been deteriorating since I was in my early 30s. It had nothing to do with calcium deficiencies. I have had 5 back surgeries and am looking at another in the coming months. Here is the thing RNY has literally given me my life back. I take the calcium that is perscribed to me and have my labs checked regularly, The folks that struggle with malabsorption are the folks that do not take their Vitamins and do not follow up with their bariatric team. Seriously don't be afraid to do what is going to keep you healthier in the long run. RNY is the best thing that ever happened to me besides my kids and hubby. Do some more research, it will help you through this. I also have never had dumping syndrome and can eat what I want. I choose to eat very healthy. Good luck to you! -
New to all this...and with a few questions
Djmohr replied to rattlingwalls's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
The best thing you can do for yourself is research these surgeries now. There is a ton of info on this site and you can actually find tutorials on line that will explain each surgery. It is very important that you understand the pros and cons of each. My surgical team shared with me they rarely perform lap band surgery and if they do it is usually to take them out and do an RNY or sleeve. There are also reasons why you would have an RNY vs. a sleeve, it all depends on your personal health issues. For example if you suffer from Gerd/ Reflux, the sleeve can make that worse for you. This is why research is so critically important. Ask your surgeons office lots of questions about the surgeries they perform and why. In terms of diet now, it is important to begin building the right behaviors now. Others have mentioned what those are above. Good luck to you! It is a long but incredible journey and the results are definately worth it? I am wondering why Mom was denied? Did they give u a reason? -
Hubby Kudos and 1st protein shake
Djmohr replied to dhrguru's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I too am a premier Protein chocolate fan. It is the only Protein Drink I can tolerate.the chocolate is fabulous, the vanilla too sweet for me. But then again, I no longer touch sweets they actually don't taste good to me at all. Thank goodness because before surgery I had the worst sweet tooth ever! Now it does not bother me if someone has dessert at all. -
Straws, why now straws after surgery?
Djmohr replied to staceymeaux's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My doctor has recommended no straws due to gas from sucking n the straw. I use a Water bottle instead and it works great. In restaurants I never order anything to drink because of the 30 minutes before and after rule. I carry my water bottle everywhere I go including in my house so I have a constant reminder to drink my water. Alcohol is a no no for at least the first year and then with caution after that. Caffeinetted beverages actually dehydrates you. I was told I could have it if I wanted after month 3. I simply don't because it gives me migraines if I drink too much of it. I am a water girl all the way but honestly had been drinking only water for the last 3 years. Or milk. -
I watch it everytime I see it on tv. I have seen several episodes now with eating disorders like bulletin and anorexia. I have yet to see one where they follow a morbidly obese patient who is addicted to food. I think they definately should!

I was told by my nephrologist that kidney dialysis was not too far off in the distant future for me. When I started this journey I was stage 3 CKD. It is the reason I had bypass surgery in the first place. My nephrologist was the doctor who suggested I considef WLS and he is my hero! I am now 5.5 months post op and two weeks ago I went in for my kidney function testing. Guess what, my kidneys are functioning at a normal level now! Knowing that you cannot repair your kidneys I asked the question: what am I supposed to say on medical forms when it asks the question do you have kidney problems. I was told that I need to say that I have had a previous history of kidney disease but am now functioning at a normal level! No dialysis in my future! Woot woot!

Is There Such a Thing as a “Stall?”
Djmohr replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I definately believe in a "stall" or waiting period that the body goes through when going thru rapid weight loss. I have experienced one true stall that lasted 3 weeks and I was barely getting 500 calories a day and working on like crazy. I have also experienced small pauses where I wI'll go back and forth with the same 2 lbs for about a week and then suddenly the weight just starts dropping slowly. Call them whatever you want, they definately happen to me when. Am doing everything I am supposed to. -
5 weeks post LRNYGBP
Djmohr replied to DeterminedMAMA's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
@, I agree totally with the requirement of a positive attitude. How many times do you hear or read about folks who have complications and just cannot seem to bounce back. When you are sick and weak it is very difficult to stay positive but it is so important in the WLS area. The minute a person gets negative, they seem to give up and go back to bad behaviors. Good for you that you have done so well given your complications. I hope you get well soon! You look terrific by the way! -
That nausea could be caused by dehydration. Are you getting enough Water at this point? It is the most important thing you can do for yourself in the beginning. If you have to use an app to track your water intake. I use myfitness pal but there are some others out there. If the nausea keeps up call your doctor right away. I hope you feel better soon.

Drinking.. not the fun stuff
Djmohr replied to ahout831's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@ahout831, I remember the medicine cups! LOL. I hope you have a good day today. Stay on top of your liquid this first week and everything will work out and you will start to feel better soon. Good luck! -
Drinking.. not the fun stuff
Djmohr replied to ahout831's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You can sip constantly but do not gulp. First of all it hurts like heck and you will want to stop drinking altogether. I remember the feeling of extreme thirst.cwhat worked best was literally holding my water bottle in my hand and sipping about every 20 to 30 seconds. You are thirsty because you are likely dehydrated. -
I remember being as excited as you are describing, honestly the thing that is the most painful is the gas they pump in your tummy. Just walk a lot and sip your fluids. You will do great. The first hour after I woke up I was a little uncomfortable but they were quick to get my pain under control. The first night can be a little rough in terms of getting rest. Again, the gas from your tummy. My nurses brought me lots of hot packs for my tummy and that really helped. Also I found getting out of the bed and sitting in a chair was definately more comfortable. Walk as much as you can and the gas will be gone before you know it. I wish you a very speedy recovery and a very healthy future!

B12 can definately cause this. I might suggest calling your doctors office and follow up. You should not wait until June on this.

Pulmonologist Appointment
Djmohr replied to freelee's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would not worry so much. Most of the time they will do a breathing test and if you have not had a sleep study to see if you have apnea they will do a sleep study. If you are already on CPaP they will just ask for your previous sleep studies and last download. Everything is very easy but that is the usual type of testing they do. -
How many calories post-op?
Djmohr replied to Melanie36's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Never. I even asked both my nut about calories and they told me not to worry about it at this stage. If you eat the right foods by sticking to the plan calories won't matter. Just track your food and make sure you get your protein, water and vitamins in. -
Almost 9 Months Post-Opt and All of My Comorbiditys Are GONE
Djmohr replied to Cupcake's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@Cupcake, congratulations on your fantastic progress! isnt it great going to the doctor and getting great news instead of terrible news! I love that this surgery can actually turn your life around. -
will i feel gassy and bloated every time i eat forever? or is this just a post op thing?
Djmohr replied to armywife79's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
It won't last forever. I will say I had a similiar experience and found I was now suddenly lactose intolerant. I switched from making my Protein shakes with regular skim milk to fat free lactaid. As soon as I did that that bloated gassy feeling went away. And it turned out I actually like the taste of lactaid better. Good luck! -
Hi there! Most people lose weight very very fast during pre op diet and the first week or two following surgery. You should expect that to slow down drastically. For me I lose on average 3 lbs per week. The thing is, some weeks I don't lose anything and then the next I lose 4 or 5 lbs. As long as you are losing overall you are in good shape. Some people weigh every day and some people weigh weekly, monthly or only when they go for check ups. They do this to avoid the frustration of the scale. I weigh once a day religiously but I don't get stressed when the scale doesn't move. Most of the time you are still losing inches. There is also the dreaded 3 week stall, but if you keep following the plan, I promise you will begin to drop those pounds again. You just cannot expect that you will lose as fast as the first couple weeks every week. Good luck!

What type of weight loss surgery did you have? If you had bypass you might try the pouch test which allows you to understand if you have stretched the pouch. You can google "Pouch test" or 5 Day pouch test. It basically has you begin the first week as if you just had your surgery. I would start by totally going back to the basics. Liquid diet. And then introduce high Protein, low carb meals back into your diet. Are you exercising? if not, you have to get back on that horse right away, it will help boost your metabolism. Also make sure you are getting 64 oz. of Water per day. All of those things will help you get back on track. Good luck!

Oh your so pretty only if you were skinny?
Djmohr replied to emma88's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I only ever had one person say something like that to me. Believe it or not it was my mother N law. She has passed on now but she was well know for having diarrhea of the mouth. Once she gave my husband a shirt she bought on clearance as a gift for christmas. She bought him a medium and he wears an extra large. When he opened it, and said Mom I have not been in a medium since grade school. She said well lose some weight and it will fit you fine. LOL. That was just the way she was. I collect Wee Forest Folk mice, mostly the Halloween series. Once my mother N law gave me one as a gift for Christmas. It was a chubby mouse standing on a scale. I got the hint. She was just a very rude person who said whatever she wanted. I can laugh about it now but she hurt my feelings regularly. Unfortunately she passed away last April and I did not have my surgery until September. She will never see me at a normal weight. I hope she is looking down from heaven and is proud of the progress i have made. I do however love going back to my job that I was layed off from and watching peoples faces when they see me. I am down 82lbs and it is very noticeable. It is the best feeling when someone goes "oh my goodness, you look absolutely fabulous" It gives me the motivation I need to continue on my journey. -
Make absolutely sure you are taking extra Calcium every day. If you don't your teeth and bones will suffer the consequences. Sorry to hear you are having trouble.
