    Bypass or sleeve

Here is the thing, if you get heartburn or reflux at all the sleeve can make that much worse very quickly. You must do your research and quickly. I have read so many posts from people that made the decision to go with the sleeve even though it was recommended to do bypass and now they are having revisions to bypass anyway. I originally had planned to go sleeve and after my doctor recommended bypass I was devastated. Then I researched the heck out of it and came to the conclusion that I was only going through this once if I could help it. I went with bypass and have not regretted it once. I can eat anything I want, have never had dumping syndrome, have exceeded my weight loss expectations. I was removed off all heartburn and reflux medication within one month post op and have never had a single episode of heartburn/reflux/herd. Good luck, and please do your research quickly.

    Easy Chicken Recipes?

My favorite recipe for grilled chicken is Greek chicken. There is a marinade that you use that makes the chicken juicy and delicious on the grill. You can find the recipe on line by googling Greek chicken. I use the boneless, skinless breast. The marinade has olive oil, lemon juice, fresh garlic, fresh oregano, salt and pepper. You put the marinade in a plastic bag with the chicken breasts for about an hour or more if you like and then just grill them til done. Yum!

    New "addiction"?

I find myself addicted to looking in the mirror or at pictures of myself now vs. 1 year ago. Every time I look in the mirror I think who is that person looking back at me. Also I am addicted to wearing clothes that actually fit me now. I was so used to hiding my body that I bought everything larger than it needed to be. Now, I cannot stand when I put something on and it's saggy or baggy. I want to look nice all the time. So, shopping is something I love to do when I can.
  6. I am seven months post op. I craved a sandwich like crazy until I tried one for the first time at 5 months. I found the bread fills my tummy and I do not get the Protein I need for the day if I do that. Also, it actually makes me very uncomfortable. Now, if I use bread to make a slice of French toast where I soak it in the egg mixture, I don't have much of a problem with it. I can only eat about a third of that piece of French toast. Crackers however work nice if you use chicken or tuna salad. I only do this once in a while because I find if I eat to many bad carbs like bread or crackers, I don't lose that day.

    W I G S

Ugh, I totally feel for you. My hair has been falling out since month two and I am now at month 7. Thank god I had a very thick head of hair to begin with, it is now very very thin and coming out worse than ever. I have had my Protein, Iron and thyroid checked in the last two weeks and everything is normal. My surgeon told me once the weight loss stabilizes the hair loss will stop. I have 52 lbs to go. And of course I am now at a 1 to 2 lb loss per week. I have a ways to go. Anyway, I actually went to a wig specialist that focuses o wigs for cancer patients a couple years ago after having trouble with my thyroid and losing about 1/3 of my hair. The wigs she had were top quality but pretty expensive. I paid almost 700.00 for mine. I did not wear it for long but pulled it out the other day. Not sure if I will wear it but if things keep going the way they are I might have to.
  8. I too have never had dumping and can literally eat anything I want. At first my bariatric team though I had not pushed the boundaries yet but I can assure you I have and although some things like ice cream make my yummy feel heavy and uncomfortable, I don't get sick. Here is the thing, your new stomach controls how much you can fit into it. You control what and how often you put something into it. This is why building good eating habits is critical to your success. Just because I can eat anything I want, does not mean that should. This is simply a tool to help you manage your hunger. You have to get to the point where you truly recognize real hunger and a whole new feeling of full. Full now does not mean stuffed to the point where you are uncomfortable. I used to do that all the time. Full now means satisfied and comfortable. This is exactly why having this surgery is very hard work. You have to manage your food, Water and activity every single minute of the day. If you do that, the rewards are incredible. Better health, massive weight loss and more energy than you can imagine. I consider myself very lucky to be able to eat what I want without getting sick. Good luck to you guys!

    25yr old Newbie

@@KalelsWifey, i too suffer from horrible migraines and have been using a drug called Dihydroergotomine. (dHE). About 4 years ago I went to a neurologist that specializes in migraine. She is a migraine sufferer herself and I have learned a lot from her. I have not been to an ER since I met her because she provided me with the right medications so that I could treat them quickly at home. I take one dose of Propanalol each evening. A very low dose. This is used as a preventative. Then when I feel a migraine coming on, I give myself an injection of DHE in the leg. 98 percent of the time the headache subsides completely within 30 minutes and I feel perfectly normal. Every once in a while I get a super severe migraine where the DHE does not work right away and then I have a rescue shot called Toridol which makes my super migraine disappear completely. I will say since having my RNY completed my headaches have gone from daily to maybe once a week on average. Some weeks I get none, others I will get two. We did try stopping the Propanalol but my headaches came back daily so we just use that one dose in the evening. We did stop Topomax after surgery. I don't think that medication did anything for me. I have learned that migraines are genetic and usually the only thing that resolves them for women are to go through menopause. Even then, they may not resolve. I am hoping I am one of the lucky ones who does resolve as I am going through menopause now. My poor son and granddaughter (she is 10) both get severe migraines as well. Hopefully they will get them under control now because migraine is actually damaging. I have developed arthritis in my jaw from clenching due to the pain. Once that happens there is nothing much that can be done. I wish you all the best with your recovery and hope your headaches get better.

    God Bless Yoplait

I might have to give Dannon Greek light and fit a try. I used to love Greek yogurt but it is too thick and sour tasting now so I eat regular yo plait light and boost the Protein with high Fiber and protein granola. It would be great to get an even bigger boost from my yogurt but I want to enjoy it. Thanks for the tip on Dannon Greek light and fit.

"You'd be much prettier if you lost weight"

What the heck is wrong with people! I am so sorry she said that to you. Clearly she is ignorant. I am not so sure she is a "real" friend. You just keep moving forward, you know what needs to be done and leave those rude people in the dust.
  14. Yeah! My move is over and I was able to get back on my elliptical and treadmill today! I feel great!

      Miss Mac

I just bought a recumbant bike / elliptical hybrid a couple of weeks ago, and I love it. It is parked right in front of the TV. If I am watching TV in that room, I must be on my bike.

My elliptical is a recumbent bike and I love it. Much easier on my joints but I get a great work out. Mine also has muscle endurance so you can add to your work out.

  15. You look absolutely fantastic! Don't be so hard on yourself. You know what you have to do to get what you want, you just need to get going again. But rest assured, you look terrific!
  16. I have told everyone. I am proud of my decision to get healthy and could not be happier with the results. Anyone who asks how I have lost the weight, I tell them I had WLS and then share with them how it works and how difficult it is. I have received nothing but support and questions from folks that have been interested in getting help themselves but are fearful.
  17. I buy mine at costco which carries 18 packs. I have tried all the favors and chocolate is the only one I buy. vanilla and strawberry are two sweet for me. I absolutely love the chocolate, it is the only Protein drink I will use. It tastes like chocolate milk to me but a little bit thicker.

    3 Days Post Op

Way to go and welcome to the losers club!
  19. Hi there and welcome! This is a great site for researching information about weight loss surgery, getting and giving support to others who are thinking about getting WLS or have already had this surgery and also venting when there just isn't anyone to share you concerns with. I am a RNY gastric bypass patient who is 7 months post op. This surgery was all about getting healthier for me. Weight loss was secondary as I was in a bit of trouble health wise. I currently have psoriatic arthritis, hypothyroidism and degenerative spine disease. Prior to surgery I had diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, uncontrollable reflux/gerd and stage 3 kidney disease. The kidney disease is what pushed me to have this surgery. At my check in with my nephrologist in February, I was told that my kidney function was normal and I was no longer at risk. I chose bypass because I was informed it would resolve my reflux and the sleeve would make this worse. I had also done a lot of research and learned that the band was not an option given how many people have to have it revised to a bypass down the road. Immediately following surgery my diabetes and reflux were completely gone! Within 4 weeks post op my kidney function had improved and my cholesterol was normal. I was removed from all medications with the exception of hypothyroid replacement and a beta blocker used for the prevention of migraines. I was on a ton of medications. My recovery was text book. I followed all of the rules and continue to do so and I believe this is why I have been so successful. I am down over 90lbs with 53 to go. I would agree that the 10 day pre-op diet is challenging but very doable and it sets you up for success. For me the toughest part was the puréed diet. Ugh! I just did not tolerate blended meats and I don't tolerate Beans of any kind. They cause me to gag and vomit.during that stage I lived on Protein shakes, cottage cheese, yogurt and creamed Soups. This surgery was one of the best things that has ever happened to me. There was not ever one second that I regretted it. I can eat anything I want without getting sick. My body craves good protein and good carbs. My sugar addiction is completely gone. I love to get exercise when I used to hurt so bad that I could not move. This week I discovered that I can sit on the floor with both my legs crossed Indian style. Do you know how long it's been since I could do that? I can literally run up and down the stairs when I used to suffer just to get up a small flight. I look and feel fantastic. People that have not seen me for a while are shocked at how great I look. I used to hate shopping, now I love trying on new clothes. It is a blast! Insurance covered everything for me with the exception of co pays. It took 9 months to get through the process mostly because of the six month supervised diet. That time was critical to helping me build good behaviors. This surgery is NOT the easy way out, it requires hard work every single day. My new pouch is a tool I use to help make good nutrition possible. I wish you the best of luck. Please feel free to reach out, I would be happy to answer any questions you might have.

    Pre-op diet, day 6

I hope you guys have a safe and speedy recovery.byou have entered the fun zone. You will get your energy back but it will take some time. You do need to make sure you are getting as much of the Protein and fluids as possible. It would be bad to go in dehydrated already. I worry when you say you only got in 1 Protein shake, Water and soup. Please be safe! Good luck!

    Magnesium citrate

Fun, isn't it! Plus you get to spend the day near a toilet. Good luck on your surgery!
  22. Ugh! You all make me feel like I made the right decision going with bypass. I had reflux and germ to begin with and was advised to move forward with bypass. I fought it at first but am so glad that I listened to my doctors. I see so many people on this site who already suffer with reflux/germ and they are so scared to go bypass. I have not had a single episode of heart burn, reflux or term and I am 7 months post op. I hope you guys feel better soon. Gerd, not germ. Stupid auto correct! So sorry.

    Feeling full?

You really need to check with your surgeons office on the amount you should be consuming for each meal. I had gastric bypass and for me it was 1/4 cup in the beginning. I am now 7 months post op and depending what I eat, I can eat about 1/2 to 3/4 cup at most. I definately ate too much last night and I was miserable! Measuring and tracking is really important. Good luck!
  24. I get that feeling of tight and painful if I have eaten too much or too fast. Even now, 7 months post op. You probably did irritate your pouch given you are only 4 weeks post op and not completely healed yet. The feeling you describe sounds pretty normal. You might think about staying on liquids for a day and give the irritation a chance to go away. If it gets worse or doesn't go away after a day or two check in with your doctor.
  25. Well done! It is a great feeling when you start to see the weight loss in your sizes of clothing. I used to absolutely hate shopping and avoided it like the plague. Now I love the fact that I can walk into any store and buy clothing. I do not have to shop at Lane Bryant any longer. Woot Woot!
