Bontril vs Phentermine
Djmohr replied to Dream4tc's topic in GLP-1 & Other Weight Loss Medications (NEW!)
I was confused too. Your stats look like you had bypass in 2001 but your ticker shows that you are having surgery in Nov. 2015. Did you already have bypass and did not lose what you wanted to or are you pre surgery? For me personally, I wanted to remove as many medications as possible by having WLS. So I stay away from drugs that claim to help with weight loss. Part of the problem is taking meds to lose weight does not teach you the life changes needed to maintain it. I have had such a history of yo yo dieting that I know any weight loss drug would not work long term for me and could create further damage to my kidneys. I do hope that it works for you long term if that is the route you have chosen. Good luck! -
A different kind of challenge
Djmohr replied to gowalking's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
@@gowalking, Congratulations on your new life! As far as those couple of pounds you want to lose again, it sounds like you know exactly why they are there and what you need to do to go after them. I think all of us will struggle back and forth but hopefully at a much more healthier weight. Good luck to you with Julian! It sounds like you have a fantastic guy! -
I am only 10.5 months post op. I have lost 117lbs and am still in weight loss phase. I have less than 30lbs to go. I had RNY and I chose that surgery because I suffered from Reflux/Gerd. Bypass cures that illness in the majority of cases. In my case it cured it along with type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and stage 3 kidney disease. All of those diseases were brought on because of my being obese. I have gone from a size 26 to a size 12! I never thought I would be able to get down to a healthy weight. I am very close to a healthy BMI. Weight loss surgery is a scary decision to make but when you are ready you won't be so scared anymore. I just hope that you choose a path that helps you lose weight before you do damage to your bodies. Whatever path that might be. Although I got rid of a lot of my comirbitities as listed above, I did serious damage to my joints and my spine. I waited much to long to do something about my weight. Even though I have joint damage, I can do more things now than I have in 25 years. I can run up the stairs, walk for miles, I literally have my life back!

@@lyndsayc21 If you haven't already take a class on the differences between the surgeries. One big reason to consider bypass over sleeve or lap and is whether or not you suffer from reflux/Gerd. The sleeve and band can make this illness much worse potentially requiring a revision to bypass down the road. In some cases, the sleeve and Lapband caused someone who never got reflux/Gerd to get it. Bypass in most cases cures this disease. If you don't suffer from reflux/Gerd then the sleeve may be the right choice for you. I have seen many many people lose just as much weight with the sleeve as one who has bypass.

That is the best feeling ever! I am happy for you!

Congratulations on your great success so far! The only way for me to deal with cravings is to go do something, anything to get my mind off of it. Lately they have been terrible for me. I am not sure why but I think it is because I am restricted from doing much right now following spine surgery. If I go do something to take my mind off of it, it usually goes away until the next time.

For the first time in my life, for just a moment, I did not feel fat

That is a great example of an NSV! Congratulations! Now can you come weed my garden? LOL! -
@@Woodland4807 Ok, you asked us to keep you in check. That says to me you already know you are doing something you shouldn't be. #1 - you are likely not getting enough Protein in. If this is close to your daily routine, then you can expect to get sick down the road or lose more of your hair than you would if you were getting your protein. You are in control of this. #2 - I would not expect to see pizza on your approved foods list at 5 weeks post op. It is clearly not the healthiest choice for you right now. It does not mean that you can never have a piece of pizza again, but it will be sometime before your new tummy is ready for that. If you need a snack at this point, I would suggest either adding another protein shake in which would boost your protein count or stick with things that have a high protein value like lunch meat, cottage cheese, yogurt, cheese, nuts or seeds. Jerkey is also an excellent option You are doing fantastic! Steer clear of things that can make you stall like the carbs in that pizza. Many complications can be avoided from WLS by following the plan provided by your doctor exactly. It is fantastic that your exercise routine is so strong at this stage as well. Keep up the great work and you will reach your goals before you know it!

Not to say this is what is happening to you but it is quite possible. I have had back and neck problems for about 25 years. One of the reasons I became obese was because it was difficult to even move. I have a osteoarthritis arthritis in my spine. I knew this before bypass. I thought losing all this weight wood definitely take the pressure off my spine. About 3 months post op, my neck and mid back pain got so bad that I could hardly stand it. I knew I had a bad disc in my cervical spine and had been getting epidural injections to help with the burning, searing pain running down my neck and shoulder. In January I went to see my orthopedic surgeon that had fused my lumbar in 2001. First they told me they see a lot of bariatric patients because as you lose fat in and around your spine, you lose some stability. Also you may feel more pain because you are more active. We did a ct scan and X-rays (I cannot have MRI). Low and behold I now had severe stenosis caused by osteoarthritis arthritis. The arthritic joints had grown large Spurs that were also flattening my spinal cord. On June 3rd I had a big surgery removing one of my vertebrae and replacing it with a donor graft and then fused 3 levels together. So far it has helped with some of the nerve pain but it has not resolved anything in my mid back which I was not expecting it to. I am still recovering of course. We now are going to look at my thoracic spine to see if there are issues there. They are the same symptoms you describe but we wanted to get me through this bigger issue first. It could be disc or joint related which causes pressure on the nerves. That nerve pain radiates around the rib cage. Not sure that you wanted to hear all that, nor am I suggesting this is what is happening with you. It is just one idea that might make sense. It could also be related to kidney stones.

I am sorry, I have no experience personally with Neuropathy. I wanted to reach out and say hi!

Did you do anything special before surgery?
Djmohr replied to ratmom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had a food funeral for my absolute favorite food the night I started my Pre op diet. I have loved spaghetti since I was a tiny little girl. I remember when my parents would take us out to eat the first thing I would look for on the menu was spaghetti. It's not like I didn't get it at home, we are Italian and my Mom made it at least once a week. As an adult I would make spaghetti at least once a week. I could eat it until I made myself hurt because I loved it so much. Then I had my surgery and yes about two months ago I tried it. Guess what, I could care less if I ever have Pasta again. I no longer like the texture or taste of pasta and I especially do not like how it makes my new tummy feel. Much like bread, I don't care if I ever eat it again. The night before my surgery, I took a long beautiful bath while listening to my favorite relaxing music. I was determined to go into surgery fully relaxed and feeling very positive about the future. I practiced some deep breathing exercises. For the first time I went into surgery without having even the tiniest nervous feeling, I was so very ready. I had a complication free procedure and recovery and have been living my whole new life ever since. I wish you all the best for a safe surgery and speedy recovery. -
Bgirl505, hair loss all depends on how your body handles the stress of all the rapid weight loss. The good news is, you should not have bald Patches, it simply sheds all over. I am one of the unlucky people who has had massive shedding. Like you, I have a very very thick head of hair. I have lost about 3/4 and still have lots. I have talked to numerous doctors and people who have been through it. Mine started in month 2 and I am 10.5 months post op and it is still coming out. People told me it should only last a month or a couple months. So when I got to be six months and it started coming out faster yet, I got scared. All of the bariatric team members including my surgeon told me that it could certainly continue until my weight loss slowed down ir stopped. I think they are right about that because mine continues. Just to let you know, not getting your Protein in and having low Iron can make it worse for some. I have hit my protein goals since we 3 post op and my blood tests shows I am getting all of my nutrients. So for me, I guess I am just one of the unlucky ones. I cut my hair into a short bob which looks lovely and there really only two people that can even tell, my husband who sees it everywhere on the floor, tub and yes, sometimes it falls out in the kitchen, the other person is my stylist. My hair texture has changed as well, it is very course and kind of develop more of a kinky shape. I have been taking Biotin which helps with regrowth and I have tons of little new hairs popping up everywhere. For me, I am no longer freaking out about this because I know I won't go bald in places and it will come back. Hopefully it won't happen to you!

Beef Jerky and nuts are my favorite go tos. I also will have apple slices dipped in Peanut Butter. And of course cheese but you were looking for non dairy.

You know, I have had a lot of surgeries in my life. Several very big scary ones. With this particular surgery I never got that anxiety that I have had with others. I was way more excited about getting that part done with so I could get my health back. Try to keep that excited feeling, the surgery was a piece of cake for me personally. Once it is done you get to start a whole new chapter in your life where you get your health back and feel great in a very short amount of time. You are going to do great! Go in to it with a positive attitude and you will recover quickly! Good luck to you and see you in the losers club -
@@Chelsdkunk5894 I buy a generic brand at Walgreens. It is a multi Vitamin and they are small enough to swallow. My nut and bariatric nurse told me at six weeks I could move to the kind you swallow vs. chew. I would ask if you can change over soon.

Wow - can it be real?
Djmohr replied to luvhermitcrabs's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Congratulations! The work thing is a bit tricky. Depending on how you recover and tolerate pain you could make it back in a week. I went home on wed. Took my last pain killer on Thursday. So 4 total days on pain meds. The hardest part was the total concentration to get my Clear liquids in that first week. I sat with it right by my side and had to literally focus and sip constantly and I was lucky to get half of what I was supposed to in. When I went to full liquids the next week it got even harder. And by then I was very week and found myself napping every day for about 3 weeks. For me, it was not the pain. It was how tired and weak I felt. About the start of week four things got much better and I was functioning fairly normal but still not getting enough Water or Protein in. -
Way to go! That is always a great goal to hit!

@@leag78 Good morning. I am 10 months out and still have to drink 1 Protein shake a day. I wish I could get all my protein from my food but I am not quite there yet. I do think if I pushed a bit harder by reducing the veggies or a bit of fruit and increase my meats I maybe could just hot that mark. I happen to enjoy my veggies too much to give them up and my nut prefers I eat those veggies. I use the two bites of protein for every one bite of good carbs which is what she told me to do. I use my 1 Protein Shake in the morning as my Breakfast.

I am pretty sure your muscle cramps are from being dehydrated based on your Fluid intake. Definitely this early on that small piece of banana has enough sugar to cause mild dumping. You just need to do the best that you can with your fluids and also be consistent with them. Good luck and congratulations!

I am 10 months post op and still struggle with this issue daily. I take a stool softener that has a laxative in it everyday, twice per day. If I still have trouble I drink a glass of miralax. There is no taste to the miralax and all. -
