Hello from Spouse of Sleever in London UK
Djmohr replied to Gerry McCafferty's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Welcome! How fantastic of you to be so supportive of your wife. It will make for a much easier transition to a healthy lifestyle. I had RNY but can certainly answer questions as well. There are many many supportive people on this site. Good luck and feel free to reach out. -
Yes, I did experience similiar feelings. I started my journey with an on line class that my bariatric center of excellence offered. Of course I had more questions so I went to an in person class that one of the nurses who had bariatric surgery conducted. I had decided that the sleeve was the right surgery for me. Then I met with my new bariatrician. After taking a full medical history she made the recommendation that I have RNY due to my severe Gerd. I was devastated and shared with her my fears of RNY. Mostly I thought for some reason RNY was more radical, I was afraid of malabsorption and I was terrified of dumping syndrome. She spent a lot of time with me helping me understand that RNY is no more radical than sleeve after all they actually remove 85 percent of your stomach with the sleeve. Malabsorption helps you to lose weight and both surgeries require Vitamins for life and labs to ensure you are properly nourished. As long as I had my labs drawn at designated times and follow ups with my doctors I would do well. In terms of dumping, she said not everyone gets it and you learn what to eat and what not to eat. I was pretty convinced at that point but knew I should get a second opinion and was encouraged to do so. I went to see my gastroenterologist. He was very concerned about going the sleeve route for me because I had severe Gerd and was already taking the most powerful drug and the max dose twice per day. He said if I had the sleeve and my Gerd got worse there would be no way to treat it without having a revision to RNY anyway. I decided I wanted to go through this once and went with the RNY. I have never had a single episode of Gerd and have been off that medication since 30 days post op. I also never had an episode of dumping syndrome. All my co morbitities have been resolved and I feel fantastic. I did do a ton of on line research as well and learned that many people end up with revisions to RNY. I decided to put my trust in the experts and stopped worrying about what could happen or might happen. I knew I could lose the weight on my own but I also knew I would never keep it off and I was sick. Having RNY was the best thing I have ever done for myself. I hope that you are able to get all of your questions answered and find the right surgery for you. My only advice is you have to get comfortable with the surgeon you are using and if you are, then you have to trust them to make the decision that is best for you. If you are not comfortable with your surgeon get one that you are. I would be very careful to not use one that will tell you what you want to hear but one that answers the questions you have until you are satisfied. You also have to be open to all of your options and make a joint decision. Good luck to you!

Almost everyone has the gas pain usually in your shoulders and chest. It will pass after about a week or so post op. The thing that worked best for me was walking, gas x, heating pad and drinking as much Water as I could tolerate in small sips. Hang in there, it gets better.

I promise it gets better. Be sure you are getting lots and lots of fluids. Dehydration can make you very weak.

Does anyone feel pressured by surgeon to have the bypass (instead of sleeve)
Djmohr replied to Mayastone's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would honestly see a new surgeon. A lot of the information you articulated is not correct. Either she misinformed you or you misunderstood or a combination of both. Given your health history and the fact that you have no comorbitities the sleeve may be the right thing for you to do and if she is pushing the RNY for her own reasons you don't need that. There are plenty of people on this site who have lost just as much weight with the sleeve vs. bypass. You just have to work harder at it. Now all surgeries require exercise to be part of the winning solution if you intend to get to a healthy weight. Trust me when I say, I cannot simply eat differently and lose all my weight. That is part of the commitment. I had bypass and am a big supported of the right surgery for the right person and you must include ones health history into that decision. Personally, I would get a new surgeon if I was uncomfortable with their approach. -
@@Smye Hugs and prayers to you. I am so sorry that you are going through this. I cannot imagine what you are feeling. I hope that as time goes on you are able to heal and you are able to remain friends. You clearly love her very much and I am certain she loves you too and doesn't mean to cause you pain. I hope that you find peace with one another.

How Do You Set Your Goals?
Djmohr replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My first goal was to simply start feeling better. I was so sick before my bypass surgery. Within 6 weeks that goal became realized. Prior to surgery I told my surgeon my number 1 goal was to have the ability to hop on a bike and ride it by spring. My surgery was last September. He told me that was entirely possible for me. And of course I could until I had spine surgery in June but I will be back on that bike again I hope! Then I started setting smaller goals. I would buy a bra or a pair of jeans one or two sizes smaller and my goal would be to fit in them. I also had weight goals, I wanted to get to 100lbs lost, then under 200 so I never have to look at that number on my scale again. Now I am inching toward my ultimate personal goal of 165. I chose that goal because it is the high end of the healthy weight chart for my 5' 10" frame. If I lose a tiny bit more than that fine but I would really like to get there. I take it 10lbs at a time and let me tell you I am barely creeping there these days. About 1 to 2 lbs a week but I am still losing! -
Liquid diet two weeks before
Djmohr replied to christinekerib's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Also if you are getting nauseous that may be dehydration. Make sure you are drinking lots of fluids along with the Protein shakes. I was a diabetic, type 2 and as long as I stayed on top of my shakes, broth and Water that feeling passed. I checked my blood sugar 4 times per day to make sure it did not get wonky on me. I felt much better after day 3 but I did not eat anything I wasn't supposed to. I would call your doctor with your readings and ask what to do if your sugars are going low. If they aren't then follow the plan, and stay hydrated. That feeling should go away. Are you also breaking other habits like soda and coffee at the same time? If you are that could be making things rougher for you. I would be very careful about eating anything you are not supposed to it could lead to an open surgery and you definitely do not want that. Your liver needs to shrink to have a successful laparoscopic surgery. Good luck! -
@@forbradley I am so sorry that you had this experience.what that nurse did is not ok and when you are feeling up to it, she/he needs to be dealt with so it doesn't happen to anyone else. Daisy is right, the best thing you can do to get rid of that pain is move a lot, drink a lot of fluids constantly, use a heating pad when you are sitting or laying and use gas x. That gas pain is nasty but once it is gone you will feel much better. And whatever you do, you need to get caught up on your fluids or you will end up back in the ER. Sip sip sip constantly. When you are sitting hold that cup in your hand and sip. Dehydration is likely making you feel much worse. I hope all gets better soon!

Yup, I take either that or Allegra. Allegra doesn't make me sleepy and lasts 24 hours.

Once getting home from the hospital.....
Djmohr replied to Dub's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It is definitely easier to sleep with your head elevated. I fortunately have an adjustable bed and a recliner. It was a few weeks before laying flat on my back or side was possible. Also when you wake up from surgery they actually have your head very elevated. -
Don't worry but do call your doctor. Please make sure you get plenty of fluids you don't want to end up in the hospital. I hope you feel better soon! P.S. Don't be embarrassed we all have things like this that we need help with.

???????????? Fustration????????????
Djmohr replied to Jasmine Smith's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Yup, welcome to your first stall. The best thing you can do is stick to your plan and stay off the scale. I promise you are not a failure, your body is simply taking the time to breath and reset itself. If you search for stalls or 3 week stall on this site you will likely find hundreds of posts on this issue. I am sad to say this won't be the only one. As long as you follow the plan, the weight will start coming off again. My longest stall was 28 days, I literally had to put my scale away. Stay positive and don't let this get you down. I will be honest, in the beginning I had to set an alarm and measure my good because I had the same problem. I followed a very structured plan until I could figure it out. I would have some warm Water first thing to wake my tummy up. Then about 30 minutes to an hour later 1/4 yogurt. About 2 hours later 6 oz. of Protein shake. Then for lunch around 1pm I would have some puréed Soup, or puréed tuna salad. No more than 1/4 cup. Then at 3pm I would have another 4/6 oz. of Protein Shake. Finally about 6pm or so I would have puréed chicken or fish with a little puréed veggie or applesauce. There were times if I would feel uncomfortable, or I would hiccup or cough it was a sign that I was getting full. Or even a deep sigh. I never went beyond 1/4 cup at the puréed stage that way I was sure I would not over do it. By the way. I would make sure I would get at least 48 ounces of water. I promise you will start to figure it out you just may need to stick to a schedule and measure for now. Good luck!

My dad and his wife....
Djmohr replied to choosehope's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
@@choosehope It sounds like you and your Dad are close so I understand why this is so tough.no one can tell you what to do here but the important thing is to guage whether or not he will support your decision prior to telling him. And trust that he will likely tell his spouse. Just prepare yourself to defend your decision. This is all about getting healthy and WLS is the number 1 cure for obesity. Simply explain that this is something you need to do to get healthy. "Yes, I could diet and exercise but the weight will still be there or will come back, I have proven it over and over again in my life. This is my best chance to get healthy and keep my weight off for good." explain what you need from them and if you have to what you don't need from them. Many times when you tell your parents they are mostly scared for you. -
I was a type 2 diabetic but only on Metformin prior to surgery. My A1C was 6.3 the week before surgery. I was told to stop taking Metformin the day before surgery and have never taken it since. My A1C is now 5.4. I am and always will be a diabetic but it is in remission, hopefully forever! My endo was absolutely thrilled because both my cholesterols are healthy as well.

@@Adrianabelle Chances are that person who lost 100lbs is afraid every day of gaining it all back. The sad part is, she likely will. I would like focus on yourself and don't even worry about others. I remember when I told someone at work that I was going to be having WLS. I did not tell hardly anyone at work but this person and I were both obese. She I was in even worse shape that I. When she asked me why I was having it, I explained that my medical situation was out of control and my kidneys were failing. I shared with her that my surgeon believed this surgery would put my kidney disease, type 2 diabetes my reflux, high cholesterol and apnea into remission. She became very rude and said there is no such thing as a cure for those things, don't you think everybody would have WLS surgery if that is all it took? I worked another 4 months with her while doing my check ins before I got laid off. We never talked about it again. She has not seen me since and I don't communicate via social media where I am at with my weight loss or if I have even had it. Only a couple people who don't blab know. In the fall, I am scheduled to visit the campus where I used to work. I cannot wait until I meet with those people who were closest to me. She will be there, I have a friend who will make sure of it. I am looking forward to walking in with my size 12 maybe 10 by then body. Unless I am with my husband most people don't even recognize me. When I left, I was a size 26. It should be fun! The moral of the story is, you cannot tell people who don't wNt to hear, but you can show them later!
-
The people who say things like it's all in your head do not understand or believe that obesity is actually a disease. A disease that will kill you slowly and painfully. Don't give those non supporters one second of your time, you won't change their minds. This is about you getting healthy. Keep your eye on the prize! You don't need those people pulling you down. Leverage those that do support you. Good luck!

You actually cannot stretch your pouch however as the swelling goes down you have more room in there. also down the road, there is something that happens in which your brain allows you to eat more as well, so it is important that what you are eating is healthy and that you keep portion control in mind. I am 10.5 months post op and I can eat about a cup of food total. When you think of a cup of food, you think of it all chewed up. So if you are eating a salad you can actually eat more than will fit in a cup before chewing. As long as you are not eating longer than 30 minutes and sticking to your plan you should be just fine. There has been several studies done on whether the pouch stretches. The consensus is that it does not but we tend to get more comfortable eating more than we should. Listen to your stomach and stop when you are full, don't eat beyond that. Also watch for slider foods that make you hungry again too soon. This becomes important when the hunger hormones come back for us RNY folks. Slider foods for me are things like Soup, yogurt, pudding.....

The emotional swings really do get better and it is different for everyone. The head hunger we deal with is always a battle. I have learned to simply change whatever I am doing at that moment to get my mind off of it.

Sick and Tired of Protein!
Djmohr replied to ANewMe83's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You might try some of the other Protein supplements that are far tastier. At 2 weeks post op I changed to Premier Protein brand ready made shakes which are delicious with no protein smell. Each has 30grams of protein, 1 gram of sugar and 160 calories. There are tons of recipes out there to add things to them. The beauty of these shakes is so many grams in one shake. In the beginning I only had to drink 2 a day and I was at 60 grams, I then had to get 10 grams from food. You can get then at Sam's or costco and sometimes Walgreens. Make sure they are very cold. Also, Syntrax has grab and go hectares that you add to Water or milk, they are actually delicious. Fuzzy naval, vanilla bean torte and Caribbean cooler are among my favorites. I also don't notice that horrible Protein Powder taste with these. It is way too soon for you to be sick of protein so you need to find one that works for you. Good luck! -
