Question on Calorie Breakdown Percentages Post-Op
uncwmike1 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm just about 6 weeks post-op and I've been adamantly tracking my food in-take using MyFitness Pal (great tool). However I was wondering what nutritional calorie breakdown percentages I should set as my goals (% of calories from carbs, fat, and protein)? Or what goals does anyone else use? Currently I've set my goals on MyFitness Pal for 25% Carbs, 30% fat, 45% Protein. Any feedback would be awesome! -

Those liquids are definitely tough to get down the first 2-3 days post op. I struggled the most the during that time just to get 1oz each hour. It will definitely get better with each passing day I can assure you.

Best protein drinks? Clear, whey powders, and liquids?

I really like the Bariatric Advantage brand shake powders. It was what my surgeon had me on pre-op diet. I've just continued to use up what was left over from my pre-op diet. The Orange Cream flavor is my favorite, tastes just like an Orange Julius from Dairy Queen. The reason I like them is due to the mild taste (not too sweet). I've tried several different "Ready to Drink" Protein shakes (Oh Yeah!, EAS, Muscle Milk, Pure Protein) and they all tasted too sweet for me. My favorite is Premier Protein (chocolate flavor). I can only find them at Sam's Club, but they may be available elsewhere as well. -

I would seriously advise against it. Just like others have mentioned, being high likely could cause the "munchies" and that couldn't be good for your sleeve. I couldn't imagine anything worse than being "head starved" and not being able to fit anymore in my tiny stomach. -

I'm 1 month out now and I've found that I can go to just about any restaurant and find something that I can eat on the menu. I mostly order from the appetizers menu as a full meal ends up being a total waste of money. When eating at ethnic/asian restaurants (Thai, Chinese, Indian, etc...) just be careful to about hidden sugars and carbs from sauces. One of my favorite Asian choices before VSG was Pei Wei, which serves seemingly fresh and healthy Chinese dishes (much better than your typical corner Chinese take-out joint). I figured this place would be no problem to find something healthy (high Protein, low sugar and carbs), however, I was shocked when I researched their nutritional information online. Most of the dishes that seemed healthy were actually loaded with sugar..... lots of sugar and carbs. Even the lettuce wraps! It's all because of the sauces they use to prepare their dishes. -
In less than a week the struggle of the first few days will be a distant memory. You can trust that it will get easier!
