what's the deal w soda? can i ever have it again?
Iowa_summergirl replied to Jeffrey Eliot's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I had a major addiction to soda when I started this journey. I work in a restaurant where all the soda is free for the taking anytime I wanted. I also suffer from migraine headaches. So I started taking a drug called Topamax. One of he side effects of Topamax is that it makes carbonated beverages taste like absolute crap. It kicked my habit and I stopped drinking them because I didn't like them anymore. It was kind of a forced stop, but I dropped a lot of pounds after giving it up! -
Work with food
Iowa_summergirl replied to teamskinny_keea's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I manage a buffet place with salad bar, pizza, chicken, ice cream, and a fountain soda machine. I haven't had to deal with it yet, but tomorrow I will be starting back. I plan on taking my breaks in my office so I can eat slowly and think about what I am eating. We do have some healthy choices on the salad bar, so hopefully I can set my mind on those too. I am going to rely on my sleeve to tell me that I don't need to eat anymore and to not eat beyond that. I have no doubts that it is going to be a challenge...we'll see how it goes! -
Survey - Carbonated Drinks? Do u drink them?
Iowa_summergirl replied to lapnicky's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had an issue with soda as well...I started taking Topamax for migraines, and the side effect is that it makes carbonated beverages taste like crap. So...that helped me kick the habit and the weight came flying off! -
Lower-end BMI Sleeve Surgery. Any others?
Iowa_summergirl replied to Kevineastwest's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It is nice to hear from some of the lower BMI people. My surgeon used to say that "I" was a peanut compared to all of his other patients. I feel like I'm not keeping up pace with weight loss, but since I am starting at a lower number 224 on surgery day, I assume that my weight loss is going to be slower. I am currently at 214 which is similar to what I have been for several days (I know...I do a daily wt which I have to stop). I was sleeved on Oct 13, got advanced to soft/mushy foods today which I am very excited for! -
4 weeks post op, needing help! :(
Iowa_summergirl replied to itsjessica's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks for posting your progress. I started at almost an identical BMI. Pre consult weight in April was 256, pre surgical weight was 224 and now 2 weeks post I am at 214. I feel like I've been stuck for a couple of days now after the first week things went really well. The replies have been very helpful. -
Stomach rolling and diarrhea (TMI I know)
Iowa_summergirl posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved on Oct 14, and have had a relatively routine course. I could feel when I was getting full and if I drank too much at one time, I could feel that little bubble when things finally went through to the pouch. Today however, my stomach and bowels are absolutely rolling. I can hear all of my bowel sounds out loud and they are constant. I have been in the bathroom many many times and most of the time it is pure liquid. I feel like all the Water that I put in me is coming out 15 minutes later. My stomach isn't tender. I feel ok, just tired (but I didn't sleep much last night). Thoughts? Just a weird day? Should I be worried? That nasty complication "leak" just comes to mind... -

Calling all October Sleevers
Iowa_summergirl replied to sleevechic8's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sleeved on the 14th. One day in hospital, no issues with nausea or pain. I haven't had a horrible time with liquids, just sip all day long. My favorites are yogurt, cream of chicken soup, and minute maid frozen fruit juice (delish!!). My biggest issue is hunger and what to do with myself while the rest of my family is eating. Some of their meals smell so good!!! -
How long before you abdomin feels normal?
Iowa_summergirl replied to Angie413's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I also had sleeve on 14th. I'm tender, but mostly where my incisions are. I pulled the glue off of the small incisions, which has helped with the tugging feeling. Other than that, I am too getting sick of the liquids...craving carbs big time! -
Sleeve on Oct 14
Iowa_summergirl replied to Iowa_summergirl's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
So how are we doing after the weekend? I'm still doing ok. I am still struggling with craving normal stuff. My husband cooked for our family this weekend, and the smells were very much alive for me. I wanted what they were eating. Sitting at the dinner table with my cup of broth was just brutal. Counting down the days until I see the surgeon and get the go-ahead to add some good stuff. I am very nervous as part of my knee wound from my total knee is just not healing. I added some extra Protein supplements to my am milk, just to boost my healing. But I am still not seeing a lot of progress. I have a huge history of infection, so I hope there isn't something raging under there. I will see the surgeon Tues and see what we have to do this week to get that solved. Painwise in my belly I am just fine. My issue is my knee pain. I am also finding that crushing my meds and hiding them in some yogurt is working great. The best food I found for this week...Minute Maid frozen fruit pouches. 100% fruit juice, 40 calories, and they taste awesome! -
I am finally creating a post and hope to align with some other new sleevers so that I know everything is normal for me! I had the sleeve done on Tuesday, Oct 14 at about noon. Was feeling good by Wed, Oct 15 so home by 5pm. So far, I have been doing a lot of broth, milk, and juice in addition to my water. I was completely turned off by the creamed soups and cream of wheat they tried getting me to eat. I'm content with the thinner stuff. I am craving some normal food like pizza though! I think one of the hardest things for me is going to be trying to make meals for my family while knowing that I can't have them for the first couple of weeks. I want to make an honest attempt at sitting at the table with them for dinner, but it is hard to explain to my five year old that mom can't eat that. In addition to the sleeve surgery, I am also 3.5 weeks post op from a new total knee. At age 38, it hasn't been an easy road with the knee but hasn't been the hardest either. So that's me in a little nutshell...hoping to explore some new liquid foods today!
