    newbie and prep questions!

Congratulations! I'm sure you're very excited to be in your last few weeks before surgery! It's a really exciting time! I was sleeved in June and to prep for surgery I... - stocked up on all my "food" chicken broth, Popsicles, baby food, Protein powder (my hospital reccomended Bariatric fusion so I got that. I didn't love it. GNC has one that is similar that I perfer) and light yogurt. You aren't really going to feel like going out very much the first couple weeks, and remember you aren't supposed to be driving so I got everything I needed as far as that went. -I also did a major cleaning in my house. Washed all the bedding, disinfected, de-cluttered everything. It's much nicer to come home to recover when you have a clean home! - I also got magazines to read. You are supposed to be up and walking every hour, but your body does need a lot of rest too- so I made sure to have things to keep me entertained. - I wrote in my blog a TON! Writing helped me sort out all the emotions I was going through. -Something fun- buy a cute outfit in your dream size! It's nice to have that in your closet to keep you motivated Good luck!!
  2. Wooohoo!! So happy for you!
  3. So I was sleeved on June 5th 2014. So far I have lost about 96 pounds. At first, the weight was flying off, but this past month I barely went down. I even had a whole week where I lost nothing at all! Has this happened to anyone around the 5-6 month mark? I knew it would eventually, but I didn't think it would be this soon! I've started upping my time and intensity at the gym and have gotten super strict with what I am eating again. I would love to hear if you have any tips that got you through you road block!

    Sleeve at 23!

Congratulations!! I was 23 when I was sleeved as well. It's great that you made the decision young so you can live the better part of your adult life healthy! The weeks leading up to surgery are a very exciting time! Can't wait to hear how it goes!
  5. So exciting!! The weeks before surgery are filled with TONS of emotions! I wrote a lot of it down to help me process it all. Make sure you stock up on all your "food"..get your Protein shakes ready, chicken broth, popsicles etc... I also did a major clean in my house so everything was nice and ready for when I returned home to recover. Netflix and gossip magazines became my best friends while recovering you have to get your walking in every day, but it's also important to rest and relax so I had plenty to do without getting bored Will be thinking of you these next few weeks...keep us posted!

    What are you excited for?

I'm excited for.... cute summer dresses, running my first 5k, shopping wherever I want, getting to Onederland, helping other people, not feeling out of place with my pretty and skinny friends, line dancing, going to the beach. I'm down almost 100 pounds so far and am hoping to get to my goal weight by my first anniversary of my surgery date.

    5 days until surgery

Super normal thoughts! It's important to remember the risks to your surgery! Don't stress. Remember that you are making the right decision and that is your life is about to AMAZINGLY change. The surgery and recovery time is not as long as you think! I was up and walking around while I was still in the post-op room! Just get excited! I would highly recommend not watching Grey's Anatomy...that was a mistake I made 2 days before surgery

    200.....

    Wooohooo!!! Almost in Onederland!!! Congrats
  9. Same thing happened to me!! 23 when I had the surgery (24 now) with no health issues (besides obesity) and my EKG came back with a slight abnormality. I had to go to a cardiologist as well. They did clear me- this happened 2 weeks before the surgery. Apparently I had a sinus arrhythmia which is very common with young people- overweight or not. Please keep us posted!!! I really hope you have no delays. I remember how stressful my last few weeks were with all the last minute bumps! Will be thinking of you
  10. Great job getting started early! That is definitely one thing I regret about my pre-op experience- I could have done more to get myself healthy. I would try starting to space out your eating and drinking by 30 minutes. That is a big lifestyle change you will have after surgery. It's best to start now so you can get used to it. I enjoy writing, so if you do as well you can document your thoughts and feelings throughout the whole process. It's awesome to look back on when you've hit other milestones and see how far you've come. Start trying different Protein shakes. You will be on them before and after surgery so you will want to figure out which one's you like. I'm sure your Dr/nutritionist will have suggestions. I was told everything I eat/drink needs to be under 5 grams of fat and 5 grams of sugar so stick to drinks that fall in that category. Start cutting your food into smaller portions-another big change that is hard to get used to. Try taking your normal bite and cutting it in half. Buy yourself a cute outfit! If you have your 'dream size' in mind- look for clothing items you think are cute in that size! It keeps you excited for the surgery and for your life to change Hope that helps!!
  11. There are risks for everything we do in life! Right now, you are putting your life more at risk by making unhealthy choices than you ever would by getting this surgery! I was sleeved on June 5th of this year (I was 23 at the time so I know what it's like to be young with this struggle!) and would not trade my decision for anything! Yes there are risks, very minor compared to most surgeries. My surgeon told me getting your gall bladder out is more risky. You do have to make major lifestyle changes if you want to succeed. To me, it was worth it to get myself the surgery and have to deal with things like waiting 30 minutes between eating and drinking, or cutting my food into smaller pieces. Eventually, your body adjusts and it just becomes the new normal. At the end of the day, only YOU can decide to do this for YOURSELF. It has to be your choice. If you do it for any other reason, it becomes much harder to succeed. I was terrified when I initially made the decision. But the cool thing is, you have to get so many tests, go through psych evaluations, meet with your surgeon, meet with a nutrition, that a lot of the fears go away. Knowledge is power right? Chances are- your doctor has heard all your fears before and will be able to help you. I wrote about my ENTIRE VSG journey so you may want to check that out to help you. You're doing the right thing by asking- I absorbed as much as I could from people that had gone through it.

    Who Are You?

I'm Michaela! I'm 23 (soon to be 24 on November 6th) and have a ridiculous obsession with make-up. I think the best days aren't so much about what you're doing, but who you're with. I work full time at CVS Corporate for the MinuteClinic credentialing department. I am a go-getter, hoping to get promoted again in the next year. I have a deep faith in God, and an uncontrollable love for life and people. I also love to write, and documented my VSG journey thorough a blog that I kept secret up until recently. So now blogging is one of my favorite things to do I would love for you to join me on my adventure! www.journeyofonederland.com
