  1. One point that I have to make here. If you ate 2 bites of Pizza or dipped 2 fingers in a pie, consider it a success. Before I would have eaten 3 pieces of Pizza or 1/2 half of a pie.
  2. I was taking 4 500 Mg metformin a day when I started the pre op liquid diet. Within a week of starting the pre-op ( I did that for 3 weeks), I had to stop my metformin because my glucose was going to low. I havent taken once since...glucose is less than 90
  3. I am suprised to hear you all have bandages. My surgeon used some kink of clear glue-like stuff. After about 8-10 days it started to get darker and was peeling itself off like peeling skin. The result is scars that you can barely see 2 weeks after surgery.
  4. Thanks. You are right! Im am know at day 15 and I have no pain. Yes, I had the liquid pain medicine. In fact, I have half of the bottle left. I also had the shoulder pain...but everything is good now. Thanks for the advice
  5. My hospital stay wasn't too bad except for the over-night nurse that kept unplugging me and getting wires mixed up. At one point she came in and told me the monitoring people told her I was dead (jokingly I hope). I spent the night with wires and hoses criss-crossed all over me. They gave me breakfast of chicken broth, tea and crystal light on Thursday morning before going home. That was more breakfast than I expected!! The rest of the nurses etc were great! I developed lots of abdominal cramps and called on Friday night (surgery was on a Wendsday). The on call doctor (not my surgeon) said to call back Saturday AM if it did not go away. I was up all night Friday night and called the answering service Saturday AM. No return call so I called back an hour later; no return call. It was a holiday weekend. My wife took me to the ER where I had blood tests along with x-ray and cat scan. They could not find anything and attempted to call the surgeon's on call physician. I was released after 5 hours. The morphine they injected eased the pain. I never did find out what caused it. The following Monday I got an email from the surgeon's office saying that these kind of pains happen "especially after Thanksgiving". Thanksgiving??? The thanksgiving that was 24 hours after my surgery that I slept through after my breakfast of tea, crystal light and chicken broth. (My family had their Thanksgiving at relative's house). Does anybody think the pain may be from the surgery and not from the thanksgiving dinner of tea, crystal light and chicken broth?

    Keeping secrets

I wasnt going to tell anybody except my family. when I went to the first support group (pre op), one of my co-workers and my real estate agent where there and this is not a small town. The day before surgery I had to have my eyes tested for my job. I told the thin little nurse at work that I was having surgery, she asked what for so I told her. She said "I had mine 5 years ago, best thing I ever did" People....be proud...you are doing something for yourself
  9. I had 3 weeks of pre-surgery liquid diet. I ate mushroom soup once. and onion soup 3 times in 3 weeks. My surgery went well and my doc told me it was because I followed my pre-op well. The soup did not have barley in it. B cautious, different things affect some of us differently.

    surgery 11-19

Hi Lisa and others I am day 2 after surgery. No vomitting. Still sore. My blood sugar is down to 78. My nutritionist calls that hypoglycemic. Since there is nothing with sugar or carbs in my first week of diet, I am not sure how to get it up where it belongs (90-100). Does anybody else have this problem? Im thinking a small amount of apple juice might help. I will call the nutrionist today. But those worried about the pain..worry not....it is not that bad. Mine is mostly sore and mostly when first moving such as getting out of bed or out of a chair. The doc perscribed Lortab liquid (hyrocodone and tylenol) which works good for the soreness.

    surgery 11-19

Hi Lisa I am gald to here everything went well and you are home and doing well. I am home too. I came home about noon today. Like yourself I am a little sore and some gas. I have been mostly on crystal light and sugar free popsicles. I did not sleep well in the hospital. There is just too much going on there. But I slept alot this afternoon. My surgery also went well. My doc said it turned out to be a very good one. Still, I am worried about something moving in there that should not move. I suppose with time we can be more confident that it won't move. Take care, hope to hear from you soon. Lisa806...good luck....trust us...its not that bad!
  12. I also had to do the 6 month thing and the cardiac etc. My pre-op was 3 weeks long and finally my surgery is the Wendesday. You can make it through the pre-op. Atkins is good but be careful, the price varies alot. In Connecticut I paid as much as $8.99 for 4 cans and as low as $5.49. That is the only protein shake I tried I have also eaten alot of chicken and beef broth. I found onion soup with the onions strained out to be good. Also, my doc allowed low fat yogurt and string cheese and cottage cheese. Be careful with your glucose. I started to go hypoglycemic the first week, so I had yogurt, skim milk or apple juice every few hours to keep the glucose up. Good Luck

Yes, we can do it. By next weekend we will all be here telling our stories....I hope and pray that all of you have a good story to tell. Lisa, thanks for the encourangement. PS>>>I dont know about you but I am up late because I cannot sleep....each night is going to get worse
  14. LindseyAnn, Thank you for your wisdom on the intubation process. So far I have not heard any real horror stories. As far as the liquid diet, I never thought I would make it through 3 weeks. The only thing questionable I am eating is string cheese (mozarella0. One of the nurses said it was okay. Oh well....here goes...counting the days

  16. HI all I am scheduled for 11/21 and am also getting very nervous. I can use any words of wisdom at this point, I have been on my pre-op liquid diet for 19 days now. I have lost 22 pounds on the liqud diet and lost 36 pounds during the 6 month prep and waiting, Having done the day before Thanksgiving is bothering me. The thing that makes me most nervous is going under anestisa and having a tube in my throat...yuch

    surgery 11-19

Hi You are going 2 days before me. I am going to be banded on 11/21 in Hartford Connecticut. My insurance required 6 months of nutrition counseling so I have been preparing for this day for a very long time. Anyway, good luck....I will anixously waiting a reply; let me know how it goes. Are you nervous?
  18. Hi Stevie. Be careful with supplements. My Hospital (harford) gave out a brochure about not using any herbal supplements 2 weeks befoe surgery. I think it has something to do with anesthia....anybody know?

    No one in Nov?

Pamela (Pam726) Thank you for the words of inspiration. I told the doc that he could do it on Thanksgiving Day for all I care....this is way more important than Thanksgiving. I just hope my family can celebrate in the tradtional fashion. I will have much to be Thankful for that day

    No one in Nov?

Wondering if anybody is feeling like me...as in "missing the holiday"...I will in the hospital while the rest of the world is eating
  22. Stevie, No I don't excercise nearly enough. I have something going on with one of my knees. Raked leaves today and now its killing me.....Thanks for the reminder though...I need to do more. Also during my prep I had to see a physical therapist to get a excercise plan. She gave me a bunch of excercises using 2 dumb-bells to keep muscle mass up...I am doing those...but really boring!!!!!.My family is trying to eat normal and is being really good about not tempting me...but you are right....the food in the house is tough to deal with
  23. Arin The last thing the APRN who did my psych eval said to me was, "This is a wonderful thing you are doing for yourself." (note the word for yourself). Most of us never do much for oursleves. Her words have carried me through caridiac eval, 6 months of nutrition counseling, Primary Doctor referal , upper GI etc, I have border-line diabetis, sleep apnea and high blood pressure. I am now on day 10 of 20 day liquid diet for pre-op. Her words have carried me through since April inlcuding over 50 lbs of pre-surgery weight loss and I am now 11 days from getting my band. Anyway, the pscyh eval is to make sure you understand what you are doing. Implanting something into your body is serious and some people cant handle it. The other thing it is for is to be sure you are doing it for the right reasons. Health is what it is all about. Good Luck
  24. Stevie, yes....remain positive....its all going to be good....think of prize....being able to look in the mirror and smile at the person in there! Right now I mostly miss the social aspects of eating whether with frieinds, family or both....its not the same when you arent eating....beyond the social part its just putting fuel in your body to keep it going
  25. Thanks for the reply. Yes it gets easier. I am on day 8 of 21 and I think I will make it through. Living on protien shakes, yogurt, sugar free pops and broth. Believe or not, I actually feel full (psychological??). I do not go anywhere near the cafeteria at work. The only time I think of food is in the grocery store or driving by a restaraunt with the windows rolled down. If you go out to eat and miss it, try ordering just soup and consuming just the liquid...its a stretch of the rules but can do wonders for sanity...I did that Sunday and it made me feel much better
